To think that cat owners that smoke don't realise how bad they smell?

I bought some cake decorating stuff (second hand) at the weekend and it stinks. I put it through the dishwasher and now that stinks too. Why don't people realise that having cats shitting in the kitchen is vile - and why are cat litter trays often in the kitchen? Would the bathroom not be more appropriate? Why mix cooking with the toxic stink of cat shit?

And in answer to all of the cat owners that will tell me that their cat/house doesn't smell, you're wrong, it does, and there's cat hair all over you. Smokers have no defence other that you probably can't smell how bad you are because you've knackered your tastebuds.

I am never going to buy another second hand thing unless it's from a 'smoke & pet free house'. Stinky fuckers.

a damp dog always stinks!

Sadly, Raspberry, this is always true,

And a damp dog as big as our dane is hideously pungent! (He also smells VERY dog, and VERY male.) Grin

iloveeverykindofcat · 01/02/2017 10:24

As an aside, cats on a biologically appropriate raw food diet produce small, hard stools that barely smell - as wild felines do. A feline in the wild that gave their presence away by scent wouldn't last very long.

Their pee smells though, there's no getting around that.

DesolateWaist · 01/02/2017 10:26

You see the problem is user1477282676 that my bathroom is so small it doesn't even have room for a bin, let alone a litter tray.

Anyway, it's only there if she gets caught short at night when I keep her in. She never poos in it.

SlankyBodger · 01/02/2017 10:28

One of my cats smells of flowers, she is the most beautiful creature ever.

She doesn't decorate cakes though. Sad

pinkblink · 01/02/2017 10:28

I thought this post was going to be about cats that smell of smoke hahaha

CigarsofthePharoahs · 01/02/2017 10:29

My old neighbours un neuterered tom was quite smelly. It used to piss on our door step and that was grim. I've found with my cat that it's the piss and the shit that smells, not the actual cat. She does it all outside nowadays. Frankly, my house smells more of baking, sudocrem and Lynx than it does of the cat. I also agree with the coffee breath comment above. I love coffee, have to remember to have a mint or similar afterwards if I'm going to be meeting anyone.

Cats that live in houses where people smoke do smell of smoke according to my vet. She said you can smell it in their ears.

CripsSandwiches · 01/02/2017 10:33

Not a cat owner but I know plenty of cat owners who don't stink so clearly some of them are correct. That said I'd love to have a cat (damn rented accommodation) even if it did make me smell like a crazy cat lady - totally worth it. Sounds like you're a bit delicate to buy things second hand to be honest - unless you get to look/smell the items first.

Clearly, we need a picture, even if teh intarwebs have not evolved to the level of smell-o-grams yet (what was that movie in the 80s)?

TofuCat · 01/02/2017 10:37

I once rehomed a kitten from a smokers house and he did stink of smoke for a while.

HappyFlappy · 01/02/2017 10:39

For a moment I thought you had the perfect cat Bodger, but sadly her lack of cake-decorating skills have let her down.

That takes me back, Pharoahs - especially the Lynx.

When my son was a teenager I used to hate going into his bedroom to collect all of the bacteria-ridden plates pushed under the bed. It was like hitting a sold wall of Lynx, testosterone and acne-cream.

HappyFlappy · 01/02/2017 10:43

I am really house proud and think having animals inside is disgusting. Cats and dogs sleeping on beds is revolting. The thought of a cat licking me turns my stomach...

That's what I use to think then Puccini rocked up and refused to leave and adopted us and we LOVE him and he even sleeps on our bed at night Grin and I feel HONOURED when he licks meSmile

The is no way I'd have anything smelly in my house,he smells gorgeous especially his little pawsSmile

reallyanotherone · 01/02/2017 10:44

Smoke smells.

cats don't, unless they're ill, or their litter tray isn't cleaned.

Those fucking air fresheners, incense sticks, overuse of fabric conditioner/strong cheap detergent, does smell. Funny how people don't seem to know their houses stink of chemical fragrance but can smell a cat from 3 miles away.

Some people are so paranoid about smell. I'm sure it's imaginary half the time. Like the "shower every day" threads. You can't possibly know if someone smells because they haven't washed for 12 hours, or a week.

BarbaraofSeville · 01/02/2017 10:49

Lol Diaz. It's lovely when they cuddle up to you in bed isn't it?

We have 5 cats including 3 that are about 8 months old. One sleeps in the space between our pillows, one sleeps against my stomach and the other behind DPs legs. Sometimes the older cats get on to see if they can have a turn too. Its a good job we have a big bed.

JennyOnAPlate · 01/02/2017 10:52

Did the cat eat the baking stuff and shit it back out again? Cos I'm thinking that's the only way it would smell of shit. Unless the stuff was kept in the litter tray.

HowardMoonsJazzTrumpet · 01/02/2017 11:02

Some houses with cats do stink. I say that as a cat slave myself. It is the litter tray thing. I know several people who have litter trays and a few of them aren't the most fastidious with hygiene. Litter isn't changed as often as it could be and poos are left or just 'scooped' (leaving remnants). Scooping shit doesn't do the job. Change the litter and clean the tray.

When I had a litter tray for my demented, elderly boy (no longer with us), the litter was changed daily or after every poo/whichever came first. The tray was cleaned every time. The only 'smell' was immediately after he'd been. No litter tray now. My younger cat goes outside.

ifcatscouldtalk · 01/02/2017 11:06

If you clean up after pets your house won't stink. Also a neutered cat unless poorly shouldn't smell bad.

If you have a real intolerance for any trace of pet smell at all, don't have pets.

Even if the house you went into stank and you hate cats/ smokers etc and it made you feel superior. We all live differently, maybe stay at home?

AlternativeLies · 01/02/2017 11:08

Did anyone else read this threads title and think.........wait the cat smells or the owner?

Or is that just me?!?!?!?!

Eu de goady fucker toilette?

SitsOnFence · 01/02/2017 11:13

My cat smells gorgeous; a like line-dried washing.

He is mostly an indoor cat though, so it's a never ending battle against cat hair, and the entire ground floor seems to reek after he's had a poo (litter tray is in the utility room, and I pretty much stand behind him and scoop out his poo as soon as it has exited his body...) He does have some medical issues though, so other cats might not be as stinky. The utility room window stays ever so slightly open all year round, plus I open all nearby windows and doors for 10 minutes or so after the event. I am considering fitting a cat flap from the utility room to the garage so I can put his litter tray in there. Still, if someone came round just after he'd used his tray, they'd definitely smell it.

He's worth it though.

Sallystyle · 01/02/2017 11:17

I am under no illusions that my house full of pets don't smell of pets. Of course other people can smell a faint dog smell. I can smell it after they have been for a walk and they are damp. They also fart a lot.

I just don't care. I have animals, I'm going to get some animal smell. If people don't like it they are free not to visit.

However, I have no idea how baking equipment could smell of cat Hmm

Olympiathequeen · 01/02/2017 11:22

Cat litter trays in the kitchen are vile.

And people who smoke stink. DH used to smoke and I'm sure the smell clung to me and at the time I was unaware. should have booted him into the garden

Yanbu.
