Let's hope God tells Trump to rest on Sunday Grin

I bet Kushner wishes Saturdays were no news days Grin

Destinysdaughter · 01/02/2017 08:54

lamp, I agree, what's heartened me is the scale of the protests in America and around the world. I've never seen anything like it! And also we now have social media we have both access to accurate, up to date info, and a voice, neither of which existed in the 1930s. A lot of good could potentially come out of this...

James Corden video being shown on Lorraine now!

amispartacus · 01/02/2017 08:57

It does seem a strange world of checks and balances.

The President appoints the Supreme Court Justices.
The Senate approves them.
The Supreme Court has a massive say on how law is implemented and especially on how Presidential orders are executed.
The Senate blocked Obama's replacement for a year.
Now the Republicans have their man in power, they will be happy with the appointment.

I am pretty sure there must be massive discussions about this in the USA when it comes to such massive decisions and checks and balances.

One thing - when we finally decide to get a written constitution here, it will need to be carefully worded.

Who actually runs the UK?
Who makes the big decisions?
What if they are unlawful?
Who appoints the judiciary?
What's the role of the Head of State?
That Brexit court case was so much more than Brexit.

And just to remind people again....

I've been a lurker since Trump thread 2. Thank you to everyone on here who posts REAL facts and links. Flowers

As a result I have emailed my MP and signed the petition. I'm too far from a city to march but I support my dsil who marches in Chicago. Please keep informing and inspiring me.

ZebraOwl · 01/02/2017 09:01

(HardcoreLadyType Given the population density I reckoned I'd find someone nearby... Smile I'm in one of the places that gets the News Shopper but the don't mention us on the banner on their website. They probably think it'd lower the tone Wink

And good on your MP.)

OhYouBadBadKitten · 01/02/2017 09:04

Dunlurking, if you are really really brave, you might be able to find a few other locals to have a little rally where you live, with placards and a few chants. Only needs to last an hour, invite the local press, phone a local radio station and you have yourself a mini protest.

Does take courage and a bit of time though.

I've also been v inspired by how massive demos have been instigated by just ONE person, the Women's march came about from a Facebook post from a woman in Miami and it spread throughout the world! In the UK, many of the local protests on Monday were again started by just one person.Social media can be an incredibly powerful tool!

amispartacus · 01/02/2017 09:10

PMQs will be interesting today.

The first time May will face MPs in the House. No doubt she will not answer questions.

I predict she will:

Say that we need to do deals with our closest ally
Say that we have a special relationship
Not answer whether she knew in advance
End with attacking Corbyn as someone who would ban our closest ally from coming here (to many cheers from Conservatives)

I've watched PMQs for ages - I know her routine. Just watch her last response to the last question

(I will check this post at 12.30pm and see how close I am)

BadKitten I'm also limited by illness so don't think I could cope with the organising bit but I'm putting feelers out for something I can attend. I got a bland answer from my (conservative) MP and he didn't address the US situation at all but just sent a standard "we must go through with Brexit because it was a democratic vote" answer, but I he has spent a lot of time in the US as an academic and also in Iraq so must be feeling upset by the ban. I intend to confront him again soon at a book signing Grin

amispartacus · 01/02/2017 09:17

If you really want to fuck with Trump supporter's minds, follow the NRA on Twitter and ask them if they think it's ok for radicalised AMERICAN Muslims to have the right to bear arms?

Then ask them if that's keeping America safe.

Mind fuck them

Peregrina · 01/02/2017 09:23

spartacus - I think you will be 100% right.
Like TM's performance about the missile test failure
AM -Did you know
TM - Jeremy Corbyn blah, blah
AM - Did you know
TM - Jeremy Corbyn would leave us defenceless blah, blah.
And so on.......

Why don't all the Opposition shout 'Answer the question' to her? After all, persistent questioning last Friday dragged a half answer out of her about Trump's refugee/Muslim ban.

SanFranBear · 01/02/2017 09:24

One thing which bears mentioning is that there are three other Supreme Court Justices who are in their 80's (the oldest is 83) so it might be that they will get the opportunity to appoint another during this term which would be pretty bleak.

woman12345 · 01/02/2017 09:25

It's modest, but still, the petitions, marches, twitter unsettles them.
Good idea amisparticus
Now the democrats are at least starting to unify a response?

SalemsCat · 01/02/2017 09:29

Morning allBrew, just catching up and place marking. Wtf will happen today?

amispartacus · 01/02/2017 09:30

It's modest, but still, the petitions, marches, twitter unsettles them

Exactly. No need to be rude - people just need to remind them that they live in a country where anyone can buy an automatic weapon and their President is acting as the perfect recruiting tool for lone wolves.

Then ask them if they think anyone should be able to buy weapons?

Then ask them how Trump is keeping Americans safe if he allows anyone to buy weapons even if they are now starting to hate and they live legally in America?

It might make just do something to their brains..

Or just tell them they're going to need weapons when the next lone wolf attack happens in the USA from one of their own.....an American.

Lweji thanks so much for J Stewart, oh I've missed him!

Oh I know, the gun thing, amisparticus and for sure the opposition know that. I think we all do now. This is the new normal. But the Nazis did have guns, too. Anyone seen the film 'Defiance'?

Lweji · 01/02/2017 09:41

Asking questions is the key.
Make them think about it, rather than telling them.

Ask about the Constitution too.

woman12345 · 01/02/2017 09:44

Absolutely Lweji as much as anything, the questions need to be asked so everyone understands the answers including ; the alleged 51.8% for Brexit and the 49% in us who support the Moslem Ban.

amispartacus · 01/02/2017 09:47

Ask about the Constitution too

Yes - some people are VERY keen on the Constitution when it affects their right to bear arms. They will defend the Constitution to the hilt.

It's useful to know through here and elsewhere what things are being done that are against the Constitution.

On Hitler.

This is super anecdotal, but I thought I would share it here anyway:
A friend on facebook shared a post which raged against the attitude of radical Islam, and all types of fundamentalists and fascists, and linked to a video of the anti-Trump protests. The gist of it was "to those who are always attacking Western values - look, they are defending us."
I know that persecution of Muslims and demonisation of Islam will only push Muslims towards extremism, and that is why Trump's ban will make the world more dangerous not less. But the flip side of that is visibly standing up for the rights of others helps validate the stance of moderates. If prejudice and bans are a recruitment tool for the Jihadis, then standing against them is a recruitment tool for tolerance.

The intended "target" of protests is the government, or those in power. But with worldwide media coverage, they are not the only ones who see it.
