So here we are again another thread, all miving so fast it is mind-boggling. Great to hear of so many people all over the world standing up for what is right Smile

charlestrenet · 31/01/2017 23:52

Thanks Pausing! Wow, you're a busy lot!

Amispartacu I feel the same way about othering. I think what has depressed and frightened me most about Trump and Brexit is that before all this I kind of thought that most people are fairly tolerant and that a lot of the big battles had been if not won then at least gained largely majority ground. But all of this stuff goes to show that we still have a long way to go, and that hanging back and being complacent is dangerous.

Love your link- always nice to hear that someone with a powerful voice is on the right side.

SinisterBumFacedCat · 31/01/2017 23:56

Yuge placemark

brasty · 31/01/2017 23:58

I never thought most people were tolerant. I think a lot of people live in an echo chamber. If you are liberal, you mix with others who are much the same. So easy to think most think like that. Sadly they don't.

Destinysdaughter · 01/02/2017 00:06

I used to live in London which was v liberal.Since move ing to the West Midlands,I've been shocked at how much more openly racist pp are

There's a by election in Stoke soon, pretty sure it's going to go to UKIP Sad

amispartacus · 01/02/2017 00:08

If you are liberal, you mix with others who are much the same

And if you have views that are to the left or right of the main, you tend to hear similar views so your own view is reinforced as 'typical'.

I've said so much of this stuff before. But MN is probably a big echo chamber as well - it's really hard constantly debating the same stuff and constantly repeating the same arguments and it can get heated. But if you step away and don't engage, people start listening to different voices and views go unchallenged.

It's now becoming more real.

It's VERY hard to argue with a pp who is blatantly racist tho as it tends to be irrational and not based on facts or evidence...

PlectrumElectrum · 01/02/2017 00:27

Place mark

BoreOfWhabylon · 01/02/2017 00:33

Placemarking. Bigly.

saffronwblue · 01/02/2017 00:34

I too wake up each day feeling edgy and head to this thread for updates and sanity.
Trump is currently messing with our (Australian) PM's head. Promised a dirty deal refugee swap and now reneging.

OhMrsQ · 01/02/2017 00:35

Does anyone else get the feeling he wanted to cause a massive fuss with regards to the immigration chaos, as a trial for a coup?

This is a sad, sad state to be in. Then if Farage gets in, plus le pen, the whole world will be a fucking nightmare.

SinisterBumFacedCat · 01/02/2017 00:39

Farage could never really get in now could he? [rocking gently] I'd become a refugee myself.

Formerpigwrestler9 · 01/02/2017 00:45

trumplethinskin he say:
'Getting ready to deliver a VERY IMPORTANT DECISION! 8:00 P.M'
now what time is that in pounds and pence?

SinisterBumFacedCat · 01/02/2017 00:49

Fox News have a countdown to the next headfucking facepalm trumped up announcement in 15 minutes. Oh and stupid Eric.

Destinysdaughter · 01/02/2017 00:51

It's 1am isn't it? ( 5 hrs time difference)

Formerpigwrestler9 · 01/02/2017 00:51

ooh er!
my breath is bated....

saffronwblue · 01/02/2017 01:01

Classy countdown. The best. I wonder if he will deploy the nuclear codes with a televised countdown?

StatisticallyChallenged · 01/02/2017 01:03

Is he going to announce it like it's a beauty pageant do you think? Pining for his miss universe days?

HoHumming · 01/02/2017 01:05

He is live now

cozietoesie · 01/02/2017 01:12

Gorsuch nominated to SCOTUS.

Formerpigwrestler9 · 01/02/2017 01:13

is it just me or has the Trumpster changed his hair colour, it seems to be nudging away from the orange and a bit more towards ash blonde?

ZebraOwl · 01/02/2017 03:23

I don't know, you go to sleep for a few hours & people up & start a new thread...

My actual point, however, was that my MP has q roundly condemned the ban, which was cheering: www.newsshopper.co.uk/news/15060050.South_east_London_MPs_join_criticism_of_Trump_s_Muslim_travel_ban_and_May__cosying_up__to_the_President/?ref=twtrec

BestIsWest · 01/02/2017 06:36

Just wanted to add this again in case anyone missed it. Thanks to whoever shared it on the last thread.

Gorsuch was the judge on the side ofHolly Lobby argarguing that their right to religious freedom should mean that they can remove the provision of contraception from their company health scheme. That doesn't look like freedom of religion to me, that looks like allowing a company to impose its religious beliefs on others.

And note: this isn't just abortion we're talking about, this is contraception. So they would deny women tge ability to prevent pregnancy in the first place (because these are shop workers on low incomes we're talking about here and paying for contraception out of your own pocket is very expensive in the States), but they'd then force you to carry that unwanted pregnancy to term.
