Absolutely, Ungooglable.

What with this, and the Westminstenders threads, I am better informed politically than I have been all my life.

But I am upset about it. It upsets me that there really are so many bigots in the world. I thought, in the main, people were better than they are proving to be.

I am also shocked about how fragile our democracies are. They will only continue to be democracies if we all choose for them to be.

UnGoogleable · 31/01/2017 23:31

I do agree that 'we' both in the literal sense and in the media sense, are sensationalising it.

And it worries me, because I think the dead cat theory is spot on and Trump wants us to focus on this smokebomb while he gets on with the real shit when we're not looking.

AlwaysTheWinner · 31/01/2017 23:31

Yep, Ungoogleable, I'm really down just now and Trump is definitely a contributing factor. I'm having a bit of a crap time at work but at least I can console myself that I don't work in the White House! Grin

I agree. I hate the divisions in this country at the moment. The attacks on people trying to stand up for others. The prominent commentators and the media trying to divide us, attacking groups and 'othering'.

I know what 'othering' is. I can see it. I see it in the press and on here. It's so scary.

That's why people are getting upset. The Middle East seems a long way but this is HERE. It affects people HERE. I wish I could do something about issues in the ME but I can't. I can make a difference in MY country. Because if no one stands up here, then who will stand up for me if my time comes.

That's why people are protesting. The US is a leader. It's influential. If the US thinks it's ok to behave like that, then what's stopping the rest of the free world?

Agreed. I actually think the media are quite canny in some ways with this - the focus on Mo Farah, or the Glasgow vet student being caught up in the travel ban for instance. They're people that we in the UK can relate to, are proud of. Can get outraged about - how DARE he prevent our Mo, a Knight of the Realm, from travelling to his family - and suddenly people care where they may not have done previously.

GingerIvy · 31/01/2017 23:36

Sorry, I get that people are divided, but I struggle to find sympathy when people spout things that are so patently ridiculous that a child could see through it. It's frustrating, and I often believe they are taking the easy route, handing over their brain to let someone else do their thinking for them. They just parrot what they've heard. No thought process going on there at all. I've had a couple acquaintances try to change my mind, and after hearing their "evidence" I honestly can only think "Are you actually LISTENING to what you're saying?"

SanFranBear · 31/01/2017 23:36

That was just lovely, Ami and gives me hope that in the GOP there are progressive and strong voices who will stand up for those who will struggle to be heard by this current administration.

I posted this at the end of the last thread but in the ethos of 'less politics, more kindness', I'm going to repost.

brasty · 31/01/2017 23:37

No my DP understands it and is horrified. Just is worried that it may have a negative affect on me. The world just seems especially scary at the moment.

Weedsnseeds1 · 31/01/2017 23:37

What on earth is the "European rape crisis" mentioned on that travel ban link? Have I missed something? Where did that come from?

Me too! I work in a govt department similar to one of those that has been silenced by the Trump administration. I can easily imagine how it could happen here - but I can also imagine the utter outrage that my colleagues would feel, and therefore how those in the US must be feeling now at being gagged. They won't sit back and take this.

Trust is probably the most effective weapon against May and Trump right now.

Ironic Trump can't go there as his only celeb fan is Scott Baio who was in Happy Days which was set in Milwaukee.

Watched this tonight and thought it was great, esp as it's a bit before my time. My DD 17 loved it too. On Netflix, but maybe possible to find elsewhere. Do we need a new women's movement?

Good on Prince Charles.

I think the State visit, if it happens, could prove to be Charles' making. It would be wonderful if he said no, his mother wasn't going to be subjected to it, and Trump would have to face him, like it or lump it. There would be absolutely nothing the government or the US could do about it - if the Queen isn't well enough she's not going to be pushed around by any political sucking up agenda.

Trump would be really miffed at not having his audience with the Queen. It would be fabulous.

I presume you know about cognitive bias - so much of it going on. People want to hear what they agree with and find it very hard to change their views.

This series of programmes is fascinating.

It's about how humans think

Yes. Doesn't make it any less frustrating. But then I'm tired and a bit cranky. Think I'm going to bed. Wonder what will have developed overnight. Hmm
