To warn you about Bio Oil and baby oil

Don't leave in reach of young kids. If inhaled they can kill.

DH is sat in A&E with DD (2) waiting to be transferred to the paediatric ward. She swiped the bottle and drank it whilst he was making her bed.

I'm so worried, and feel so rubbish I can't be with her as baby DS is breastfed and won't take a bottle. I just want to be with her :(

Please please keep oils out of reach of kids. I had no idea. I had no idea she could unscrew lids!

Also can't believe 111 didn't seem to be worried. Family member is a GP and told us to take her straight to A&E. A&E said we were right to go in.

I'm sorry that was really insensitive. I actually read those firsts two sentences and then posted when I should have read the whole post. I really hope your DD is OK.

I am sure she will be ok now she's in A&E. Don't beat yourself up, toddlers are not easy.

I had a similar situation when DD was about two, she pushed a chair to the cupboard, climbed up and reached a bottle of Calpol and stupidly I hadn't screwed the lid on properly. I hadn't even known she could climb on a chair before then! Came in and she was holding the lidless bottle. Took her to A&E, thankfully she hadn't actually drank much but god it was scary.
I took it as a good reminder to myself not to get complacent, I was a lot more vigilant after that.

Your DD is with her daddy so don't feel bad. Please let us know how she is.

That sounds really scary.

But I think honestly you ought to expect baby oil to be something you shouldn't let a baby swallow!

It is insane the lack of resources that goes into keeping children safe, a one-day optional antenatal class just does not cut it.....and that's the only state provision I can think of. I only found a child-baby first aid class by chance (after looking in the relevant places, eg St Johns). I've downloaded some useful stuff from the Child Accident Prevention Trust.

Do not get me started about button batteries and people that leave them lying around when there are kids in the house......!

It is very worrying, one of my boys drank oilatum when he was a toddler. I had no idea how much which made things worse, he was fine but it was scary for a while. Sending love to your DD.

She's bouncing on the bed in paediatric ward apparently. Thankfully she didn't drink much of it and hasn't been sick and hasn't been coughing, so they think she will be ok.

LDR - I didn't hand it to her as a drink! I wouldn't let her swallow any cosmetic product, or anything other than normal food and drink. I left the bottle in reach by accident- put it down meaning to put it away but got distracted by DS who has been extremely clingy today. It's been a rough day. I wouldn't usually leave it in reach. DH did bath time and didn't think to move it. I'm normally so careful about what I leave in reach.

I would have thought oils would just cause tummy upsets, not potential respiratory problems. In fairness it is a pretty pink liquid with a nice smell, and not a child safe lid. I see in America they've been made to put child safe lids on the product.

Well I had absolutely no idea about this. I never used baby oil with my dcs or bio oil; but I doubt it would have crossed my mind to keep them locked away. I am sure ds will get the absolute best care and be home before you know it. Don't beat yourself up OP, kids will always do that one thing you didn't anticipate. Try and rest as best you can and take care of yourself.

I'm confused just a tad. You talk about them being dangerous if inhaled but then go on to say your child drank it?

Oily products, even when consumed orally can cause suffocation.

These are slippery liquids that easily can be aspirated (breathed into someone's lungs when they try to swallow them).
Hydrocarbon aspiration can cause pneumonia and death. Symptoms occur quickly.

House of teenagers here and this is the first time I've read this. I hope all is ok OP - toddlers are hard work!

I had no idea that oily products could cause suffocation if ingested. That doesn't seem obvious to me. I wouldn't have expected it to be a good idea to deliberately inhale, but still didn't wouldn't have thought could be so dangerous.
