To warn you about Bio Oil and baby oil

Don't leave in reach of young kids. If inhaled they can kill.

DH is sat in A&E with DD (2) waiting to be transferred to the paediatric ward. She swiped the bottle and drank it whilst he was making her bed.

I'm so worried, and feel so rubbish I can't be with her as baby DS is breastfed and won't take a bottle. I just want to be with her :(

Please please keep oils out of reach of kids. I had no idea. I had no idea she could unscrew lids!

This has given me the shivers. I had no idea of the seriousness of oils, other than they wouldn't be particularly great for little tummies. I wouldn't deliberately hand them to DD but do not have them out of arm's reach either.

I am normally so so careful - paranoid about slicing grapes, everything screwed to the Walls, child locks and stair gates everywhere etc - but I just did not know of this danger.

Thank you OP.

newname. Didn't know the UK Poisons unit (toxbase) had got rid of their scientists! Gutted. Maybe that's why the password I forgot to forget when I left NHSdirect stopped working a while back Sad

Haggisfish · 01/02/2017 21:09

I didn't know this either and I'm a scientist. Will add this into my hydrocarbons lesson.

I took my DD to a&e after she drank some baby oil only to be told that it was pretty much harmless. They said it may cause loose oily stools but there was nothing else to worry about. The stories of it going to the lungs really scared me when I looked online for advice but the hospital totally dismissed that issue.

Titsywoo · 01/02/2017 21:46

I'm sorry are you saying it is easier to inhale oil into the lungs when drinking than it is another liquid like water? Surely you can die if you inhale anything into your lungs?

ErrolTheDragon · 01/02/2017 21:52

Titsy - I think the difference is that the body can deal with a certain amount of aqueous fluid in the lungs- cough out, absorb a bit (the lungs must be naturally moist anyway) - whereas this sort of oil coats and prevents gas exchange and from the sound of it there's no effective way to clean it out.

Haggisfish · 01/02/2017 22:02

Yes the oil costs all the exchange surfaces of the lungs, preventing oxygen getting in and carbon dioxide out. Think about if you put a drop or two of oil on a puddle/bowl of water-it totally covers the surface of the water.

Sometime back in the 1980's, or perhaps 90's I saw an Oprah Winfrey show where one of identical twin babies grabbed a bottle of baby oil and ingested it. It went into his lungs and there was nothing the doctors could do and he suffocated. The programme was to warn parents about the dangers of the oil. Dad had been looking after the twins and ai think he was changing one when the other grabbed the bottle. Absolutely tragic and so few people (myself included) had any idea of how toxic it can be. I think smaller babies are likely to inhale it because if they are rolling around the floor and grab it it is likely to be spilled over their face, whereas a toddler is more likely to just take a swig.

glowfrog · 02/02/2017 07:59

There's a lit of stuff that's bot common knowledge. It was only a few months ago I learned the heroes virus from cold sores can kill young babies. You'd think they would mention that in antenatal classes!!

Mustang27 · 02/02/2017 09:10

These things will always happen try not to be too hard on yourself. Kids are smart and fast actually I'm pretty convinced my 19 month old is smarter than me and he is definitely faster. We all try our best you weren't deliberately careless. So glad your wee one is ok.

heron98 · 02/02/2017 10:17

I tried to open a new bottle of baby oil the other day and really struggled with the childproof cap Blush. So I do think it's good they are using them.

Don't feel bad, accidents happen.

I will tell you something worse I did.... I left a can of paint out and my 4 year old tipped it all over the guinea pig hut. Fail 1.
Dropped the older kids at school and decided to come back and clean the paint off with white spirit. My phone rang and I went to pick it up. Left the white spirit right there open, literally not even 20 seconds in the same room and my 1 year old grabbed the bottle and drank it. Lots of it I think. Fail2
Ripped all his clothes off, rushed to A&E... he was fine.
Changed his nappy in A&E and it had burned all the bottom of his tummy. Fail 3

Don't feel bad, these things happen. If we policed everything that could cause harm we would all be walking around empty rooms, in bubble wrapped Hazmat suits. My 11 month old took a few bites out of a stick of deodorant once, when I phoned nhs helpline they were amazed he'd kept eating it because it must have tasted vile. Got him checked out but he was fine, apart from the nappies the next day. They bounce back so quick as well, whereas parents spend days getting over the panic and guilt. Hope you're all back home and feeling better soon.

Nhjohn · 03/02/2017 19:58

Thanks for posting, I had no idea either I shall be moving my baby products.

I hope your little ones better soon, and dont be to hard on yourself these things happen sometimes Xxx
