To warn you about Bio Oil and baby oil

Don't leave in reach of young kids. If inhaled they can kill.

DH is sat in A&E with DD (2) waiting to be transferred to the paediatric ward. She swiped the bottle and drank it whilst he was making her bed.

I'm so worried, and feel so rubbish I can't be with her as baby DS is breastfed and won't take a bottle. I just want to be with her :(

Please please keep oils out of reach of kids. I had no idea. I had no idea she could unscrew lids!

TheNiffler · 31/01/2017 08:38

DDs are adults now, but I had no idea oil was so dangerous :(

SnugglySnerd · 31/01/2017 08:44

Designed I was worried about DD being able to reach toiletries in the bathroom so I bought a couple of those Ikea containers that stick to the tiles with a suction cup. They are really high up with all our lotions and potions in, we can reach them when in the shower but DD can't.
Much easier to put up than a shelf and with the added bonus that it's much quicker to clean the bathroom without having to move everything first!

Hope your little one is ok today. I've just remembered I've left a bottle of Gaviscon on my bedside table. Will go and move it right away...

Cupoftchaiagain · 31/01/2017 08:44

Had no idea either, my eldest is 4 and bio oil etc been out in reach all her life! Will look for another place I suppose

DesignedForLife · 31/01/2017 08:48

She's not been coughing so hopefully she's going to be ok. Fast asleep still despite noisy ward.

manwhotoldeverything · 31/01/2017 08:51

Another one who didn't know this. Junior Oilatum lives on the side of our bath. I'll move it now, but surely if this was a likely risk they would put a safety cap on? And I am v careful about cleaning products and batteries but like other posters I had this on a level with shampoo and shower gel. Unpleasant to swallow but not really dangerous. Hope your DD's ok.

Miserylovescompany2 · 31/01/2017 08:51

Wow! I never thought nor imagined such products were so dangerous. You automatically put the likes of bleach and detergents out of reach, but, the hair products and oils are on a lower self. I will be moving them forthwith.

I hope your LO has had a comfortable night and will be home with you soon.

Maybe more secure (childproof lids) need to be used. Unfortunately, it normally takes a few very serious accidents for these issues to be addressed.

F1GI · 31/01/2017 08:51

I didn't know this either op and hope your dd is ok. In actual fact, after reading this, if I still had toddlers, I just wouldn't have those oils in the house. They aren't actually necessary.

Whippingpiccadilly · 31/01/2017 08:54

I had no idea about the dangers of oil either. Like others have said, I don't keep toiletries locked away as I would with medicines or cleaning products.

I've used baby oil with my toddler to make 'cloud dough' before, he helped with the pouring and I probably left it on the table for a while as he played too.

Thanks for bringing this to my attention OP, I hope your daughter is on the mend.

diddl · 31/01/2017 08:56

I didn't know either.

I had thought that it would maybe make them sick like shampoo or something.

Hope your daughter is home soon, Op.

DesignedForLife · 31/01/2017 08:58

Snuggly - thanks for the tip, I assume you mean these: www.ikea.com/gb/en/products/small-storage-organisers/bathroom-accessories/stugvik-basket-with-suction-cup-white-art-50249381/ think a trip to IKEA is in order

Manwho- you'd think right? As I mentioned earlier it seems in America they have child proof lids after a couple children died :(

BakeOffBiscuits · 31/01/2017 09:05

Thank you for posting this warning Designed I had no idea. Although by some of the know it all replies, I expect you half wished you hadn't posted.

I'm glad you're dd is ok.

allowlsthinkalot · 31/01/2017 09:06

I like to think I'm pretty clued up but I had no idea either and no, I haven't kept oils away from babies and children. I'd have assumed that drinking them would lead to a bad case of the squits and nothing worse than that. So leave off trying to make the OP feel stupid.

alteredimages · 31/01/2017 09:09

Thanks for posting this and I hope your DD is better and back home soon.

I have 2 DCs and had absolutely no idea about this until I read your post. I had baby oil in their bedroom well within their reach.

allowlsthinkalot · 31/01/2017 09:09

I was thinking of cloud dough too, whipping. I actually let my dc make this themselves and have the ingredients where they can help themselves.

I also have some bfg "dream jars" containing oil, water and food colouring sitting on the fireplace right now. Dc made these themselves too.

clumsyduck · 31/01/2017 09:11

Of course we all try keep things out of reach of our dc but sometimes these things happen . My ds was never one for trying to eat things he shouldn't but on a couple of occasions as a toddler got his hands on my face cleanser / make up and used it as paint !! Had he decided to try drink it instead he could have so I consider myself lucky not smug that he didn't !
I'm glad you dd is ok op don't beat yourself up about it Flowers

allowlsthinkalot · 31/01/2017 09:11

I've even set up a potion table for a birthday party that had baby oil on it. And like others there is oilatum on the side of our bath.

FeelingSmurfy · 31/01/2017 09:13

I hope your daughter is doing OK

It is always worth posting something like this, you might feel stupid posting it if other people make it sound like it was obvious, but if just one person learns from your post then you could have saved a life. The people here could also have it on their mind and bring it up with other mums, so you have probably reached more people than you think

I didn't know how dangerous it was, I obviously wouldn't put it with a child's toys or deliberately leave it in reach with the top off, but I wouldn't have been as careful as I would with medicines or cleaning products. It's not something I have really considered, but I would have thought it would cause an upset stomach but nothing worse than that. If my child drank any then I would have called a medical professional to double check if I needed to do anything. I will now be thinking of it in the same category as cleaning products and medicine

Peanutandphoenix · 31/01/2017 09:17

Pretty sure all things like that say to keep out of reach of children and really they should have childproof lids on them. I really hope your DD is OK.

littlepinkmouseofsugar · 31/01/2017 09:19

Part of the issue is a product called 'baby oil' would be thought to be safe because you use it for babies. For example 'baby wool' you buy in craft shops is soft and gentle on the skin, most branded baby toys all are CE tested to make sure they are safe to chew on, don't have small parts and have no lead paint etc, so one would assume baby oil wasn't particularly nasty...

I never used it for our children but once they were older a friend suggested using it to remove those stick on tattoos. I borrowed a bottle and whilst removing tattoos had some sort of strange reaction - I must have inhaled the vapours or something, and had asthma-like issues breathing after using it (I'm not asthmatic), so will avoid it in the future. Nasty stuff!

Grilledaubergines · 31/01/2017 09:19

OP what a fright for you all.

Bet you're comforted that there are so many posters who have never left anything where it shouldn't be. Seriously people, some of you are getting off on being nasty bastards. Do you not think the OP feels shit enough without you pretending you've never put something down where it has the potential to be a danger?

drspouse · 31/01/2017 09:19

I'd normally keep oils out of reach, but not super high up like I would with any medicines.

Same here, we're using Bio Oil on DD's chicken pox scars and it's high up but not locked away like medicines. Thanks for the warning. I think it might go in the child-locked drawer actually.

Olympiathequeen · 31/01/2017 09:20

I used to work for NHS direct and was aware all the essential oils were deadly because we had access to Toxbas (national poisons information centre) but bio oil never came up so even I've learned something.

I'm sure DD will be fine and these things happen all the time. People aren't aware of the dangers.

SemiNormal · 31/01/2017 09:20

Some people are smug aren't they?!

OP I hope she makes a speedy recovery.

I also had no idea. I suppose I naively assumed with it being a baby product it would be reasonably safe, certainly not potentially deadly! I had a low cupboard with nappys, wipes and baby oil.

UnbornMortificado · 31/01/2017 09:22

Designed I didn't know suffocation could happen either so thanks for the warning.

I did (obviously) know it's not to be ingested but it's not something I think I've ever thought about. (I've done very basic medical training as well)

Accidents happen doesn't matter how closely you supervise. Hope she has a quick recovery Flowers

WhoKn0wsWhereTheTimeG0es · 31/01/2017 09:24

Mine are older now, I can't honestly remember exactly which toiletries I did and didn't leave within reach when they were younger, but I didn't know about the inhalation risk either, thank you for posting and hope your DD is back home with you soon. Flowers
