To think dogs should stay on leads if in a child's play park

would it be u of me to phone the local council and ask if a sign be put up for dogs to be kept on their leads in my local play park? There is a spacious field on the other side of the gate but people still let their dogs run around where there are children playing. I think this is wrong and I'm sick of my dd being too scared to go to the park because of the dogs!

I think the dog soup issue is more how it was said. I do agree to an extent about different cultures eating different meats. The welfare conditions of those dogs are appaling but probably similar for other animals in the same region I would think. I've never heard anyone say 'the only good place for a lamb is in a stew'! Really fancy a lamb stew now

awaynboilyurheid · 27/01/2017 09:33

Agree with you op and I am a dog owner, too often see cant be bothered dog owners letting dog run around park with a half arsed come here x when you can see a child is scared.Phone your council.

WaitrosePigeon · 27/01/2017 09:41

your out of control animal has knocked my toddler over into a pile of the dogs' own shit and then started licking its face

Of course that happened Grin

Pooky77 · 27/01/2017 10:02

I agree OP dogs should not be allowed in a play area, my local park has signs to this effect, i would ask for them to be put up as there are plenty of places to walk and exercise your dog, a play area should not be one of them.

Isthatwhatdemonsdo · 27/01/2017 10:15

As a dog owner with two dogs, I agree OP. A playground is no place for dogs.
Oh and Deirdre: You can fuck right Off!!

It would help if people closed the gates to the fenced off play areas then dogs couldn't wander in. The one near us is in a park popular with (responsible) dog owners but the amount of times it's empty and the gate is left wide open so that any dog who is off-lead (safely because there are no non-dog walkers / children etc. around at that point) can wander in is remarkable. Is it so difficult to close it as you go out?
And could parents with young children teach them not to go racing up to a dog on a lead that they don't know? Most are fine but we've had one or two do that and even though my dog is mega-friendly I'm not happy having some child rush up to her when she can't easily get away. She / I would be held responsible if she got annoyed despite there not being a thing I could do to stop it (other than sticking my foot out at small child face height and I doubt that would go down well either - that's a joke by the way, in case anyone takes offence). It should be a two-way thing - I'll keep my dog under control and well away from your small children but don't let them coming running screaming towards us.

dollydaydream114 · 27/01/2017 13:22

If it's a fenced-off play area I'd certainly expect dogs to be on leads or not allowed in at all and you would not be unreasonable at all to contact the council about this. It's a bit different if it's just a general park/playing field that happens to have some play equipment in the corner - but if that's the case, then a campaign for a fence around the playground bit of the park might not go amiss.

As an aside, if your daughter is so frightened of dogs that she won't go anywhere that she might see a dog off the lead, it's worth taking steps to address that while she's still little. It sounds like it's close to being a phobia, and she is going to encounter them in public places throughout her life, so it would nicer for her if she could be near them without being terrified.

Or she'll end up like DeidrePewtey, and nobody wants to end up like that. Wink

Damn knew I should have checked back sooner:
Fear well aren't you a peach Smile as someone else said thank you for proving my point.
Larry disliking something because of bad experiences or being afraid of them etc is understandable. Not liking all animals for no reason to the point of contempt and wishing bad things on them feels very sinister to me.
humans cause way more misery and destruction but It would sound strange for someone to say "I don't like all humans"

FearTheLiving · 27/01/2017 16:08

Haven't proved any points. I've never said I don't like animals.
Calling people sinister for disliking animals is just a mind numbingly stupid thing to say.

SaskiaRembrandtWasFramed · 27/01/2017 16:23

Nah, disliking all animals is odd. Even disliking the whole of one species is a bit peculiar. I'm not a fan of ferrets but I wouldn't wish harm on them and I'm prepared to accept that some might be non-homicidal.

ChardonnayKnickertonSmythe · 27/01/2017 16:29

Disliking anilmals is very suspicious.
In fact, the only thing worse than that is when animals dislike someone. I wouldn't trust that person st all.

RhodaBull · 27/01/2017 16:36

I quite like ferrets! They have cute mean faces. People who dislike all animals are somewhat... odd. They even dislike bears ?! Where's the thread about saving your dog before a child?! I'd save my dog before a lot of my own family! (Not joking, either...)

Anyway, of course dogs shouldn't be allowed in playgrounds. But if the playground is not fenced off, then it's a little greyer. I generally avoid parks when there are likely to be children around. My dog is fine, doesn't bother anyone, but I find it uncomfortable when people start screaming or running away as if he's some slathering pit bull. If you hate golden retrievers, then you really hate dogs.

When we lived in the U.K. We avoided the park during busy times when there were kids about because one of our Dogs was reactive to people.

It would have been simpler for the council to fence off the play area as that probably would have helped everyone.

As for dogs disliking someone. BIL smokes weed and is generally a bad apple. Our dogs can tell if he has been smoking. If the dogs act weary of him we know he has been up to no good

I will be told I'm wronger than the wrongest thing in a minute, Navy.

Just give it a coupe of posts.

BlurryFace · 27/01/2017 17:00

YANBU, it seems pretty irresponsible to me, my dog wouldn't hurt a child though some with phobias could be scared. Kids can be rough with dogs, I had a small child kick mine a few years back, dogs can nab/piss on toys/coats left on the ground, anywhere that dogs visit frequently ends up scattered with turds that lazy arses won't pick up and of course bad dog owners who are in denial about their dog's behavioural problems will rock up with their snappy bitey dogs.

Sounds like a fucking disaster.

NoFucksImAQueen · 27/01/2017 17:44

The irony of you calling me stupid when your first reply to me was so articulate Grin

FearTheLiving · 27/01/2017 17:52

Thought maybe it was on a level you might understand love.

OhSoggyBiscuit · 27/01/2017 17:58

I remember the playpark in the recreation ground opposite my childhood home which had chewed up seats on the swings thanks to dogs :(

LumelaMme · 27/01/2017 18:00

Ah, a dog thread.... Always brings out the naturally charming.

FWIW, I have dogs and I would never let them into a fenced children's play area, and would be inclined to keep them out of an unfenced one too. There are just too many disasters waiting to happen.

NoFucksImAQueen · 27/01/2017 18:10

You seem so angry and bitter fear.
That must be so exhausting, you poor love.
Have a nice evening

FearTheLiving · 27/01/2017 18:15

Not angry or bitter at all. You've actually really amused me that you can make such a massive assumption about a persons character based on wether they like animals. Which no one has actually said, apart from one dickhead at the beginning of the thread.

NoFucksImAQueen · 27/01/2017 18:19

Which no one has actually said,

apart from one dickhead at the beginning of the thread.

You can't see the contradiction there?

I know someone actually who doesn't like animals or music - I'll never understand how you can't like animals or music helpful
