Inspired by the other thread ....

Who is brave enough to take the challenge? Who dishes out crisps and penguins?

No judging just out of interest to see what the DC if mners really eat!

Obviously too late today for most, but tomorrow?

My DS is well past school days now but his was a relatively repetitive boring lunchbox!

Typical would be:

Ham/chicken breast sandwich on white bread
banana
cheese and onion crisps
chocolate buscuit
Orange/blackberry squash

Now as a working adult he takes:

Pasta with sausage/bacon/chicken/chorizo/onion/mushroom/peppers/tomato sauce or wholemeal wrap with chicken breast and grated cheese and mayo or (naice) ham sandwiches on wholemeal bap or sausage and bacon roll or chicken risotto or paella or a KFC from outside his workplace
Crisps
Banana or tangerine
Vanilla/toffee muller corner

He's a much better eater as an adult so those with children whose diets aren't so varied don't despair! Generally they get better Grin

Oh, and for those angsty 'think of the children' posters despairing at some of the lunchboxes - my son is a strapping 6ft, sporty healthy adult so worry ye not! Wink

Riversleep · 28/01/2017 00:05

Yes my DH is 6'6 and my mil had to take frozen fish fingers and weetabuddy on play dates be wise he refused all other food Grin

Surely if they were having lunch at home, a sandwich and some carrot sticks are hardly poison!

'Flouncing' there are special kids thermal lunch boxes that I use. However, you've got me thinking about the warm bacteria breeding now, because I put leftover dinner in there and it doesn't stay piping hot til lunchtime so I'm worried I'll give him ecoli now Confused

ThreeBecomeFour · 28/01/2017 00:06

My DS (4) has

Wrap with either ham and dairies or tuna or cheese
1/4 sliced pepper
4 cherry tomatoes (halved)
6 Grapes (halved)
Apple (cut up)
Yoghurt or small cake or chic bar or flap jack

DD (9) who barely eats
Wrap (same filling as DS)
Handful of grapes
same dessert as DS

The green lunch box is for the 3 year old, he is only in pre-k for 3,5 hours so need only a snack box. The other is for the 5 year old and he is in school for 5 hours. Pomegranate seeds, peas, avocado, grapes, olive/herb bread bites and half a sausage roll for the little one. In the oldest strawberries, grapes, bread bites, pomegranate seeds and 2 sausage rolls

I'm happy to supply a photo.

Kid 12yrs (Y8) purple box. Packed lunch 2x week. School dinners 3x
Tuna mayo wrap, scotch eggs, cheese dipper, cheese stick, crisps and apple.

Kid 10yrs (Y5) green box. Packed lunch 3x week. School dinners 2x
Ham and cheese pita pocket (no spread..Doesn't like it) scotch eggs, crisps, wafer choc bar and apple.

Both creatures of habit so this tends to be lunch week in week out. Only thing that really changes is the crisps.

I am also very grateful for school dinners but DS 2 (7) was on a school trip this Wednesday so had;

A cheese sandwich
Apple crisps
Satsuma
Plain popcorn

Minikievs · 28/01/2017 12:15

DS (6) has a variation on:
Ham and pickle sandwich
Hula Hoops
Grapes
Snack bag of Maryland cookies/Freddo/Penguin
Babybel
Cucumber sticks
Water
Strangely enough if he doesn't eat it all (sometimes he does, sometimes he doesn't) it's always the grapes and some sandwich that's returned

indigox · 28/01/2017 12:19

Yesterday DS has a Tesco tuna sandwich, apple and a yoghurt, picked up on the way to school as I forgot to make his lunch. Thankfully he only has packed lunches once a week.

Iambubbles86 · 28/01/2017 13:55

Dh just informed me he's worked out who I am on the basis of my response to this thread lmao Grin (he's a secret mumsnet lurker haha)

mammamic · 28/01/2017 16:47

No pics. Very varied:

Tinned soups with roll OR
Sandwich/wrap/roll with home cooked meat or cheese or processed eg ham/chicken/prosciutto etc OR
Pasta/rice with sauce OR
Leftovers from night before
Plus
Fruit - whatever is in the bowl
Veg whatever is in the fridge but usually one of carrots, cucumber, toms
Drink - usually Pip water juices or similar
Homemade treat if we have one - bake banana loaf/lemon drizzle or muffins in a Sunday to last the week - something easy and quick!

Best investment was this: www.argos.co.uk/product/9270635?cmpid=GS001&_$ja=tsid:59156%7Ccid:189949525%7Cagid:18091974325%7Ctid:pla-96720332725%7Ccrid:77627773765%7Cnw:g%7Crnd:13462705615499132768%7Cdvc:m%7Cadp:1o4&gclid=CODAtI-l5dECFRAW0wod4PANOw

mammamic · 28/01/2017 16:54

Flouncing the thermos does keep the food hot. Been using one for years and DD (12 yr old) never been ill due to packed lunch.

Gileswithachainsaw · 28/01/2017 17:19

Yy mam

I have two of those flasks. They are fab. I send in stews and soups etc

Lovely and hot still at lunch time

MrsKoala · 28/01/2017 17:46

Shocked I can prep and home cook all I like but my dc won't eat any of it. Shame because I love cooking but I soul destroyingly throw it all in the bin every day.

Ds1 eats no fruit or vegetables at all. So his vits come in drop form.

The paed assures me his diet is actually 'good' compared to what it could be.

I live in a v middle class area and all the dc at preschool have a similar lunch. Ham sandwiches, a few crisps, a biscuit, a juice, fruit, cheese etc. When we meet up in he park that's what they all have. When we go on play dates that's what they have.

I am 40 and that has been a standard lunch of most people I have met my whole life.

This reaction to normal food seems very extreme.

Deidre21 · 28/01/2017 17:55

Morning snacks during the week :
Cherry tomatoes and spinach or chard and cucumber slices,
Carrots and pepper and lettuce leaves, cucumber slices,
Sometimes crackers and cheese and cherry tomatoes

If a fruit morning snack :
Strawberries
Pineapple chunks
Blueberries

Sandwiches always on brown bread :
Sardines
Egg and Mayo
Banana
Avocado plain or avocado with chicken
Cucumber and ham
Cheese and tomato
Ham, cheese and tomato and lettuce
Ham and tomato

No dessert as she doesn't ask for one but if she does it's a mini Madeleine cake or half a fruit(cereal bar)

Afternoon snack :
an apple or a banana

Water throughout the day

angela999999 · 28/01/2017 18:07

MrsKoala - that is much the same as my four kids always had (adults now). I did try various other things but they were creatures of habit. It possibly would not be considered the most healthy lunch nowadays, but I'd rather give them food that they will actually eat than the PC alternative which ends up in the bin or comes home in the box at the end of the day. My grandchildren have a cooked lunch at nursery and school now, but IMO it is no more healthy than my old lunch boxes: they have a menu which repeats every other week and includes pizza, sausages, sometimes chips. They don't get fruit but are encouraged to take some to school to eat at break time.

Reasonably active growing children can cope with a few "spare" or "empty" calories - I'd rather that than have them hungry. None of my children have ended up overweight (or lacking in any nutrients) and all of them cook healthy(ish) nutritious meals for themselves now.

Chamonix1 · 28/01/2017 18:10

1 slice of seeded loaf with tuna, sweet corn Mayonnaise or dairylee triangle.
1 child's yogurt ( frube, petit filous or similar)
Grapes
Cucumber sticks/apple slices/orange segments
1 treat, yogurt rice cake/Cadburys mini animal chocolate biscuit things/ couple of normal sized biscuits/ nutrigrain bar

MrsKoala · 28/01/2017 18:13

If my kids had to have hot school lunches they would eat nothing. I would hate living in a country where they had to eat what they were given because they would just go hungry.

startwig1982 · 28/01/2017 18:20

My ds(5) has
A ham sandwich
A bag of crisps
A yogurt
Apple slices
Strawberries
Chocolate roll/bar/biscuit/fairy cake

Apple or carrots as a snack.
Sometimes he has cheese as well or a boiled egg.

startwig1982 · 28/01/2017 18:20

Oh and water.

Daisymaybe60 · 29/01/2017 00:08

Way back in days of yore (the 80s), my DS would take:

A jam sandwich
A hunk of cheese
A bag of crisps
An apple

And every day he would bring home:

A jam sandwich
A hunk of cheese
A bag of crisps
An apple

He spent every minute of every lunch break playing football with his mates, and they let him. I replaced the crisps and apple about once a week.

Mummyoflittledragon · 29/01/2017 05:35

I gave dd (8) a pain au chocolat for a treat for tea with her eggs instead of marmite soldiers. Dd said a kid at school has two pain au chocolat, a packet of crisps and a chocolate bar every day for his lunch. I don't know if it's true. He would probably be classed as just in the obese category. My dd used to be (due to my being very very ill and unable to cook decent food). She's now overweight and slowly slimming with the aim to be in the normal category before the yr6 weigh in. If this is true, he gets a box of treats every day.
