Steve Bell's political cartoon in the Guardian this morning is to the point about May and Trump's special relationship .

Looking at the trade deficit breakdown, the US imports more than 10 billion in oil, so maybe they could invest in renewable energies and reduce the deficit that way?
Maybe?

The rest is mostly car and car parts related and appliances.
But the US sells IT products to Mexico.

The US public will have to choose between cheaper cars and house appliances or the wall.
Trump will have to convince people that illegal immigrants from South America are the devil

lljkk · 27/01/2017 07:21

UK:USA trade deal, Things in American products that are banned in the EU. Gosh, I can't wait for us to have more GM-food, not to mention all the meat produced using antibiotics and hormones as routine growth promoters. It's gonna be Great. Yum Yum. ( :( )

BigBadgers · 27/01/2017 07:26

On the subject of the wall, I don't believe it will ever get done. I think its an eleborate ploy to syphon money out of government into Trump's construction companies (which of course he no longer owns), while allowing him to look like he is achieving his promises.

There will be photos of him signing contracts. He will probably pose with a spade and hard hat. Lots of images of diggerd and whatnot. They can then just build a few metres and keep photoing the same bit, or put out pictures of walls in completely different places. There will probably be stories about unforseen difficulties that the brave and super amazing construction industry and working tirelessly to avoid. End result, billions of tax payers money spent on a lot of PR and a few metres of wall.

In time everyone will forget about it and move onto the next big thing, while trump can just keep writing himself cheques for wall building services.

amispartacus · 27/01/2017 07:28

That's the rub. If you want things to be made in your country and to have the public sector only buy things in your country, then things will get expensive and you will struggle to make efficiency savings. But you create jobs.

However what hit and repercussions will your exports face when you piss off countries. So your export industry gets affected which costs jobs.

I can imagine the Sun equivalent in Mexico would be running a don't buy American goods campaign.

The economic psychology and effect of protectionism must be fascinating. Trump expects the USA to buy American but wants deals.

MoonriseKingdom · 27/01/2017 07:29

Sorry if this has been posted before but John Oliver (Brit comedian in the US) did a funny analysis of the logistics of The Wall pre election.

It'll be interesting to see whether Trump actually does try to have a show down with individual states on issues like immigration.

It's only a century and a half since the last civil war.

(Although of course Trump's ancestors would have been in Scotland and Germany at the time).

And also, how would you square that kind of policy with Republican values?

Roussette · 27/01/2017 07:46

I really don't think the Wall should be called "Trump's Erection", we've had enough fake lies and he probably can't get it up Grin

Interesting on the trade deas and import/export. As Trump's clothing line is manufactured in China, and his MAGA hats were made in Vietnam and Bangladesh, he really might need to go back to school and learn some basic economics.

Brace yourselves... he has a new policy outlined here...
"Donald Trump’s game plan for relations with China is to use unpredictability as a means of wrong-footing the country’s Communist party leaders and extracting economic concessions, a prominent adviser has said"

That's different then!

Now off to read some of your recent links!

On a lighter note, has anyone seen any Donald Trump style birthday cards yet.

Have a great birthday. You're amazing. So amazing. The best.So good.

It's so easy to point things out to him like that - and expose them.

Have you seen the Dutch tourism video?

We have an issue with UK steel and I bet we can't sell to America as Trump says he will only use US steel.

We've pissed off the EU. We are dependant on China for a lot of trade. Who'll buy our steel? Us? But we want to save money, don't we?

Roussette · 27/01/2017 07:59

^FilthiestPerson* that article is terrifying and uplifting in equal measures. We really are getting the 'bigger picture' from that. This is a corrupt government on a scale we've never known before.... if you don't mind I'll link it again for the morning people.

Here

Going by the other Nation article, if California is anything to go by, I wonder if the US is going to become a country split, as he says "California, he averred, is “the Great Exception,” a state economically intertwined with the rest of the United States but willing to carve its own path on a host of fundamental issues." Perhaps that is the way the US is going to go... Trump States and the likes of California.

Has anyone seen Arrested Development Grin If not, I highly recommend it

This amused me greatly. The Spice one accidentally tweeted what appeared to be his twitter password ... some very funny reactions of which this is one.

Polite notice: we've seen the Dutch video several times already. Here and Facebook.

MIT Technology Review calculated that the wall would cost in the region of $38 billion to build, even if its technically and logistically feasible (plus there is the question of architect and engineer ethics, which also makes it unfeasible).

If Trump wants it be funded by a 20% import tax on Mexican goods - so the importing companies pay the tax and pass it on to ... the US consumer.

Border patrols caught 331,000 people trying to cross the border in 2015. It would be a lot cheaper to just up the border patrols (plus you'd be Hiring American!!!)

Megatherium · 27/01/2017 08:24

$38 billion to build, several billion dollars a year to maintain and police. If it happens at all, it will forever be known as Trump's Folly.

Lweji · 27/01/2017 08:25

BigBadgers

You're a huge cynic. Have some faith. Trump won't profit from any wall. It will be built because it's so great and useful. It will be a beautiful thing. The height of American border control. It will se seen from Mars and a legacy for future generations to marvel at.

The 8th wonder (wander? Wink) of the world, after: Trump Tower, Trump casino, Trump golf course, Trump steak, Trump magazine, Trump bankruptcy and Trump hair.

Lweji · 27/01/2017 08:28

He's also hiring more patrol officers.
In fact, it could be cheaper to install a human wall.
Or get drones or security cameras.

Still... tunnels, visa overstay, boats...

BigBadgers · 27/01/2017 08:41

You are right lweji I forget about his superhuman godlike powers to create the unbuildable and his almost Jesus like selflessness. I am humbled by your words and will doubt no longer.

squishysquirmy · 27/01/2017 08:49

Oh, god, there's going to be a "reality" show about the building of the wall isn't there? All-American tough guys bantering away, and overcoming over-hyped obstacles and disasters. Some faked fallings-out thrown in to dramatic music and giddy camera work, with the odd star cameo of Trump himself.

originalmavis · 27/01/2017 09:09

If it could be built with hot air, lies and bluster it would be sky high!
