Re: animal welfare, there is also a question mark over British standards generally once we leave the EU, because so many (e.g. medicine, food) are regulated by EU bodies. These bodies need to be replaced, and than somebody needs to work out whether British standards should continue to comply with EU standards.

However, in the short term other countries have an opportunity to put pressure on the UK while everything is in a state of flux.

We could be in a situation where British farmers and manufacturers have to comply with EU standards so that they can export, but face competition from foreign imports that meet lower standards.

amispartacus · 26/01/2017 09:57

Why every year we stand and refuse to forget

And the symbol of it has been hijacked by groups and by the media - and people who think differently, who raise awareness and concerns are called snowflakes, SJWS, non patriotic and villified in the press.

I hate thinking like this. I really do. But you know in the matrix when you take the red pill, you will never see the world you live in in the same way.

BigBadgers · 26/01/2017 09:57

Swap Germany for Syria in that 'yes minister' clip and you pretty much have the current Russian tactics.

BigBadgers · 26/01/2017 10:01

That's what is so depressing isn't it Spartacus. We put on the show, say all the words, but people have forgotten. The means of remembering has become a symbol of the very thing our grandparents fought to avoid.

BigBadgers · 26/01/2017 10:03

Does anyone else of this thread feel like Cassandra of Troy? It didn't turn out so well for her did it...

BoreOfWhabylon · 26/01/2017 10:08

Thank you ZebraOwl for the clip of that senator telling it like it is. and I so would

What was the shamrock thing he was referring to?

jasonapple · 26/01/2017 10:13

I haven't seen Aodhan O'Riordain's amazing speech before.
Was it ignored by the UK press?

amispartacus · 26/01/2017 10:19

Was it ignored by the UK press

It must be a real issue for the press - there is a lot of news out there. So many things going on and so many takes on it.

We don't know what we don't know - to paraphrase Rumsfeld.

Spudlet · 26/01/2017 10:24

Merrymouse You are absolutely right. Most of our farm animal welfare standards are from the EU. And frankly we weren't terribly good at implementing them before this debacle...

''Tis enough to make me want to get campaigning again... I thought I was done with all that.

amispartacus · 26/01/2017 10:31

Wow - that speech was amazing. I can see some of our MPs doing that. I've retweeted it out - social media is a great way to get things viral. I've also calmly challenged Trump supporters and posed questions that seem to make them go quiet.

People need challenging on their views. Who knows who reads them - but hopefully it just gives people pause for thought.

I hope MN is the same - views need challenging.

BoreOfWhabylon · 26/01/2017 10:36

It's times like this I almost wish I used twitter - I'd be tweeting stuff from this thread everywhere!

However, I fear it would take over my life.

squishysquirmy · 26/01/2017 10:47

The tactics used by Trump are eerily similar to Hitler's rise to power, even if there are some big differences too. The clever use of new technology to spread propaganda, the pseudo science, the deliberate spreading of conspiracy theories against opponents, the exploitation of security fears (swap communist and anarchist terrorism for Islamic terrorism), the scapegoating of minorities, the demonisation of liberalism and feminism, the nostalgic nationalism - harking back to time when things were "better", before the country was weakened by treachorous leaders, the militarism, the contempt for the political system, whilst simultaneously using this system to grab power... there's plenty more. Even the slogans are similar "America First" "Deutschland Uber Alles".

Trump is far less eloquent than Hitler, and seems much less mentally stable.

StumblyMonkey · 26/01/2017 10:48

TBF Hitler was definitely Hitler when he came into power. It's just that people either didn't bother looking that far into his background (they didn't read Mein Kampf) or they did but the various measures Hitler put in place bribed them to not care.

He increased employment, promised to boost the economy, gave Aryan people grants towards their weddings, etc....so they focused on that and turned a blind eye to the wider consequences.

Again...not saying Trump is the same as Hitler but a similar dynamic. People are willing to focus on the increase in employment/MAGA agenda and turn a blind eye to the climate change denial, impact on minorities and women's rights, etc.

BigBadgers · 26/01/2017 10:48

I have rejoined Twitter just so I can follow people and keep up with stuff. I don't actually do any tweeting as I don't have any followers. This thread is my way of getting stuff out. I hope other mumsneters are reading and seeing what is going on.

Apparently Shia LeBouf has been arrested at an anti-trump art installation after getting into a fight with someone with 'divurgent views'. I'm not sure what to make of this one.

Interesting discussion on R4 woman's hour about the rise in demand of IUD's in America since Trump's election, and the fears American women have about reproductive rights. Sad

amispartacus · 26/01/2017 10:52

Again...not saying Trump is the same as Hitler but a similar dynamic. People are willing to focus on the increase in employment/MAGA agenda and turn a blind eye to the climate change denial, impact on minorities and women's rights, etc

Exactly...I asked someone on Twitter at what point would they say "No, you've gone too far". No answer to that.

May has red lines. I hope she has red lines. And I hope politicians world wide call out when red lines get crossed. Her performance at PMQs suggest otherwise - but I guess she has to put in a show for her MPs. Maybe a journalist could clarify what her red lines are.

One thing I have decided to do is to see what help is needed to stop UKIP winning the next by election. Whether that's by using FB, Twitter and asking questions or supporting on the ground (as best I can).

Small things - but small actions can help.

jasonapple · 26/01/2017 10:56

Teresa May lets us all down here

InformalRoman · 26/01/2017 10:57

Carl Bernstein on CNN - reports that Republican leaders worried about Trump's mental state:

GingerIvy · 26/01/2017 11:10

News saying that Trump wants all crimes committed by illegals listed publicly every week.

BerylStreep · 26/01/2017 11:11

I've found my people!

DH said to me yesterday he was tired of my tirades about Trump. I honestly believe he is (fast) going to become a dictator. The withdrawal of funding from cities with high levels of immigrants is particularly chilling, I think. It is a way of vilifying that section of the population - isolating them, creating resentment towards them when funding is reduced - then what?

amispartacus · 26/01/2017 11:18

DH said to me yesterday he was tired of my tirades about Trump

I am talking to DS about it. Just making him aware of what Trump is doing and how his actions come across.

Critical thinking - surprised it's not on the curriculum. But do Governments want thinkers? People who question?

To Kill a Mockingbird has been pulled from some US reading lists. Surprised 1984 hasn't gone the same way.

squishysquirmy · 26/01/2017 11:18

I thought that republicans get very tetchy when they think that the government is interfering with local decisions - what else is Trump's attacks on the safe haven cities but an example of centralised power enforcing it's will over local government?

Spudlet · 26/01/2017 11:19

From the link posted by jasonapple

Mrs May will say: "As we rediscover our confidence togther - as you renew your nation just as we renew ours...

Dear god. Sad

PausingFlatly · 26/01/2017 11:20

I have a feeling May really does not have democratic instincts.

It's just a faffy barrier to be worked round to achieve what she, the Head Girl, has personally decided is Righteous. And while many politicians have the same blind spot, she more than most simply won't consider that laws are made not just for Her use, but for the use of whoever comes after.

The discussion above of US executive orders, including that we accept the process more if we like the person, strongly brought to mind May's attempt to use statutory instruments. I haven't properly read/understood yet, but RedToothBrush's Westministerenders threads highlighted the use of Henry VIII clauses.

The Government sometimes adds this provision to a Bill to enable the Government to repeal or amend it after it has become an Act of Parliament. The provision enables primary legislation to be amended or repealed by subordinate legislation with or without further parliamentary scrutiny. Such provisions are known as Henry VIII clauses, so named from the Statute of Proclamations 1539 which gave King Henry VIII power to legislate by proclamation.

squishysquirmy · 26/01/2017 11:22

DH thinks I have become a bit obsessed too - also I am supposed to be job hunting, so he has a point and I am limiting the time I spend on news sites and mumsnet.

I do strongly feel, though, that now is the time to be paying attention.
