Yeah, it looks like his POTUS Twitter handlers have staged a take-over of his personal account. Eay first signs of him being muzzled?

illegitimateMortificadospawn · 26/01/2017 08:11

Early ^

amispartacus · 26/01/2017 08:15

Can you imagine being the person who has give him advice he won't want to take?

Mr. President, you need to step away from the phone.

Spudlet · 26/01/2017 08:18

I think I read something about him not being allowed a smart phone for security reasons?

Maybe the reason he looks so glum is that he's been left with a Nokia 3210 Grin Bet he's searching eBay even now for a hideously tacky gold cover...

Spudlet · 26/01/2017 08:22

Oh, and a small evil to go with all the big ones... he's held up - perhaps permanently - legislation that would have banned the soring of Tennessee Walking Horses (the frankly barbaric practice of using caustic substances like diesel to produce painful areas on the front legs. The horses then have weighted chains put around their legs and are forced to wear stacked shoes like high heels, making them lift their front legs high to try and escape the pain - a gait called 'The Big Lick'.)

It's a small thing set against all the horrific things he's up to I know. But no less awful for that.

Spudlet · 26/01/2017 08:28

But there's some hope that he won't have it all his own way!

jezebel.com/mayors-of-sanctuary-cities-ready-themselves-to-fight-tr-1791642288

Sanctuary cities - where the local authorities refuse to hand over illegal immigrants arrested for non-immigration offences to the federal authorities - are being threatened with defunding. But their mayors are ready to fight back (and also, it looks as though The Orange Turdfaced One may not have as much power as he'd hoped to do this).

Lweji · 26/01/2017 08:29

Btw, if you're not, try to watch the new season of Homeland. They have a new female but rogue President, who also happens to be Dunbar from House of Cards. Second episode Sunday in the UK. I've watched it.

Lweji · 26/01/2017 08:31

I hope he won't have that much power, but Congress might. Sad

Roussette · 26/01/2017 08:36

Some interesting posts and links overnight. Love the cartoon Queen and I want to make time to listen to that podcast Stumbly.

So good to see that two more National Parks have gone rogue. These are people that care about the environment. No studies or data from the Environmental Agency can be released to the public without being picked over by political aides. I bet not! They want this one to go away.

Chicago has taken time to react to his unhelpful and divisive tweet about sending in the Feds to the City here

On the wall which is the one news item that I think will dominate the MSM for the next week... here is an article that explains it well. Mexico are between a rock and a hard place. Their President is not popular in the country, whilst they insist they may not pay for it, there are border adjustments with imports/exports which would be the way he would penalise this country by taking revenue.

Sad thing is this...
"More Mexican immigrants have returned to Mexico from the US than have migrated to the US since the end of the 2007-08 financial crisis, according to the Pew Research Center. Research shows that immigrants are more law-abiding than non-immigrants"

It was such a huge part of his campaign that he can't lose face and not do it. 2,000 miles estimated cost between £12bn and £41bn depending on who is talking. Wall to go through cross-border rivers, damaging delicate eco systems and free movement of wildlife which will in turn affect endangered species. There is regular animal migrations over the border, will he build them a door to go through?! Does he care about that? Nah.

Roussette · 26/01/2017 08:38

spudlet that practice sounds absoluely horrific.

The problem is that many people won't care about the side effects of the wall. Or if the wall is going to be in any way effective.
For some reason I don't think it will actually be built. Or it will be a small thing, bigged up by the Builder-in-Chief.

amispartacus · 26/01/2017 08:47

Sanctuary cities - where the local authorities refuse to hand over illegal immigrants arrested for non-immigration offences to the federal authorities - are being threatened with defunding

Look what we have - immigration centres. You get the same calls here - illegal immigrants who commit crimes and the media asking why they were allowed to be free.

But OTOH - most illegal immigrants won't commit crimes.

There's a balance to be found - but he goes the wrong way around it. I really can't see how using the families of people affected by the effects of some illegal immigrants to make a point about keeping Americans safe - when at the same time, he has many policies that will make Americans unsafe - such as gun control, reducing funding to DV programmes, rape centres etc.

Lweji · 26/01/2017 08:52

It's not that they committed a crime and go free.
It's just that they're not handed in for deportation.

During the campaign it was pointed out that Obama did deport record numbers of illegal immigrants, but it's facts that don't match Trump's narrative.
More fools those who voted for him for blindly believing his aternative facts.

amispartacus · 26/01/2017 08:52

You can see how he tapped into people's feelings. But the danger is that he's making a big thing out of a little thing - and blaming an entire group for the actions of a few.

That's dangerous - when you target and villify a group for the actions of a few and use that to justify your policies, you start to go down a very dangerous road. History tells us that.

There are good reasons to protect your border. To control immigration. But using the actions of a few to justify your policies is dangerous.

Lweji · 26/01/2017 08:54

Also, I've checked before and the murder rate among illegal immigrants (or immigrants) was about the same as for citizens. Considering you don't know for sure how many illegals there are, probably lower.

So, it's all spin.

amispartacus · 26/01/2017 08:55

I see the news here and the rhetoric in the Daily Mail and can see Trump here. It's scary.

It's worrying when groups get targetted by people in power and the media for the actions of a few within that group. You can see that here.

merrymouse · 26/01/2017 08:56

The tie... is it intentional?

Is it a homage to Cameo frontman Larry Blackmon and his famous codpiece?

And he'll do fuck all about the murder rate and rape rate in the USA. Just like those groups who talk about 'Muslim men and rape' in the UK but don't seem to worry about rape in general in the UK. Or who care and worry about violence towards women in the UK committed by certain groups but don't seem to discuss general violence towards women and other issues affecting women in the UK.

Yes, Farage and Hopkins, That means you.

amispartacus · 26/01/2017 09:04

I bet Hitler didn't start out by saying he was going to wipe out the Jewish population. Slowly, slowly...lay the ground work.
Get to power.
Use the media to create a negative attitude towards the group.
Blame the actions of a few on the whole group.
Tell people you want on your side that you will make the country great.
etc etc

It all builds up - just like boiling a frog. Slowly slowly. And before you know it.

Trump is not Hitler. But was Hitler Hitler when he came to power? Or was he just someone who wanted to make Germany great again and people brought into that?

birdybirdywoofwoof · 26/01/2017 09:10

Just watched that video, Helena, re. Obamacare.

Staggering.

FarAwayHills · 26/01/2017 09:11

Not sure what sort of trade deal May hopes for if Trumps priority is America First and wants people to buy American. Not much good for our exports.

amispartacus · 26/01/2017 09:13

There are a lot of lessons for other countries about social media etc and elections. I really really hope that countries like France and Holland are able to learn the tactics of Trump and can overcome them.

FarAwayHills · 26/01/2017 09:14

What are the odds on him getting Teresa to pose thumbs up with Trump like Gove and Farage👍👍

amispartacus · 26/01/2017 09:15

I am sure we will get dumped on. America has lax regulations towards certain areas - what will US big pharma do to our NHS?

Spudlet · 26/01/2017 09:18

You can absolutely see it here too - that bloody awful, shameful immigration poster that Farage the grinning snaggle toothed Trumpette stood in front of. That wasn't a dog whistle, it was a fucking great foghorn. No wonder the two of them get on so well. It's just as important that we in the U.K. are ready to fight back against the rise of the Paul Nuttalls of the UKIPs.

Wasn't Hopkins meant to be moving to the US if Trump won? Because it have quite a big car, so if transport to the airport is a problem I'd be happy to assist...
