Too old for purple hair?

Please be brutally honest.

Is it really wrong to be 43 and a bit fat and planning purple hair?

I'm not thin, glamorous, pretty or confident but quite fancy a bit of purple in my life. But H and D (neither of them very D) tell me it would be ridiculous. This actually makes me more likely to do it but will the world laugh at me?

Bill several of my professional, serious, recently promoted colleagues have coloured hair.
If you work in a corporate environment it can cause issues. Outside of that where being taken seriously is often higher stakes and risk than your next bonus many roles are open to wider "looks" but much tougher for those with no talent who blend in (which in my experience was possible in an office).

dementedma · 19/01/2017 19:52

I didn't and don't bleach mine first. It takes a deep plum purple really well and loads of people tell me they love it.

When I am an old woman I shall wear purple
With a red hat which doesn’t go, and doesn’t suit me.
And I shall spend my pension on brandy and summer gloves
And satin sandals, and say we’ve no money for butter.
I shall sit down on the pavement when I’m tired
And gobble up samples in shops and press alarm bells
And run my stick along the public railings
And make up for the sobriety of my youth.
I shall go out in my slippers in the rain
And pick flowers in other people’s gardens And learn to spit.

You can wear terrible shirts and grow more fat
And eat three pounds of sausages at a go
Or only bread and pickle for a week
And hoard pens and pencils and beermats and things in boxes.

But now we must have clothes that keep us dry
And pay our rent and not swear in the street
And set a good example for the children.
We must have friends to dinner and read the papers.

But maybe I ought to practice a little now?
So people who know me are not too shocked and surprised
When suddenly I am old, and start to wear purple.

Same as ripped jeans. Mildly ridiculous whatever your age . up to you, no effect on anyone else.

georgethecat · 19/01/2017 21:11

There is a very professional lady at work who has grey hair with very slight purple streaks - it looks beautiful, I'm in love with it.

Get it done professionally so it looks neat then colour can work for any age

user1471545174 · 19/01/2017 21:17

Not a fan, it's all a bit I'm mad, me.

DDoily · 20/01/2017 22:57

Absolutely not! I've just turned 42 and have recently started dying my blonde hair, first pink, then rose gold, and currently black roots with the rest pink (it looks better than it sounds). Do what the hell you want - it's your hair! If you're a bit nervous or unsure, start with a semi permanent/toner that'll fade, and is less commitment x

Im 51, my hair is magenta Grin. I refuse to go gracefully

Clandestino · 21/01/2017 07:01

Go for it! We are never deal for anything. It's all in your attitude.

SallyVating · 21/01/2017 08:02

Do it! I'm 47 and fat and recently I've had Blue and purple.

theothercatpurred · 21/01/2017 08:09

When you are 80 you will look back at this time and think "my goodness I was so young then!"

Do you want to to also think "ahh, I remember my purple hair, I loved it!"

Or "why on earth did I think I was too old to dye my hair? How silly, I was only 43. I wish I'd done it."

kitschisabeautifulword · 21/01/2017 08:22

I'm 57 and today I get my nose pierced and a triple helix piercing.

Had my tragus done 3 weeks ago and love it. I don't really care what social convention dictates my body should look like.

Go for it OP.

tornadedeviande · 21/01/2017 08:57

OP, I don't know what colour your hair started off and whether the dye you've already used has lightened it but as long as it's not extremely dark, you'll still get colour from Special Effects (SFX) dyes.

Pimpin' Purple is a very strong, dark purple which is very bright in sunlight and fades to a great shade of vivid blue purple.

I've found SFX dyes to be better than any others I've used and I've had unnatural colours for more than 20 years.

I'd second the suggestions that you need to stay on top of the upkeep and get your hair trimmed/cut regularly for it to stay looking good when vividly coloured. I always want to avoid the "I'm mad, me!" look and would prefer to be someone with well cut, healthy-looking hair that happens to be an unnatural colour.

Good luck!

marleny · 25/01/2021 21:15

I’m a little biased but I don’t believe there’s an age limit to any kind of hair color. I’ve had grey-haired ladies come in for purple and pink streaks, sure some people might think that’s too old for fun colors but why? Why can’t we do what makes us happy? Plus, being blonde helps blend the greys many of us aren’t ready to accept, so there’s another positive. People should be free to do what they want with their hair, and they are.

Zombie thread

marleny · 25/01/2021 23:25

I'm sorry, excuse me :)

Smallonesaremorejuicy · 26/01/2021 00:22

Too be honest it’s mainly quite old or older people that I see with pink , purple blue hair .

Wimpeyspread · 26/01/2021 00:26

I dyes my hair purple when I retired at 60 - I always threatened to, and thought why not. But then I am past caring what other people think - I thought it looked great. Shaved it all off in lockdown 1 as it was too long for the heat, so I’m back to mouse now

MaLarkinn · 26/01/2021 00:41

life is too short to give a fuck about what others think

Oldsu · 26/01/2021 01:36

I am 66 in March and have pink hair in fact I dyed it a more brilliant pink for my bus pass photo
