Too old for purple hair?

MOIST · 18/01/2017 20:54

Please be brutally honest.

Is it really wrong to be 43 and a bit fat and planning purple hair?

I'm not thin, glamorous, pretty or confident but quite fancy a bit of purple in my life. But H and D (neither of them very D) tell me it would be ridiculous. This actually makes me more likely to do it but will the world laugh at me?

Get it done at a salon. I regularly have pink, purple or red highlights but would like to try a full head of colour. Shade is everything and it washes out really fast. Mine does anyway.

SaucyJack · 18/01/2017 21:20

Do it.

You only get one go at life. Don't waste it worrying about what randoms will think of your hair.

Snowflakesandsparkle · 18/01/2017 21:28

You are never too old for purple hair!, life is too short, do what makes you happy.

RedWineLush · 18/01/2017 21:29

Absolutely you should dye your hair and it reminded me of this poem which I love:
When I am an old woman I shall wear purple
With a red hat which doesn't go, and doesn't suit me.
And I shall spend my pension on brandy and summer gloves
And satin sandals, and say we've no money for butter.
I shall sit down on the pavement when I'm tired
And gobble up samples in shops and press alarm bells
And run my stick along the public railings
And make up for the sobriety of my youth.
I shall go out in my slippers in the rain
And pick flowers in other people's gardens
And learn to spit.

You can wear terrible shirts and grow more fat
And eat three pounds of sausages at a go
Or only bread and pickle for a week
And hoard pens and pencils and beermats and things in boxes.

But now we must have clothes that keep us dry
And pay our rent and not swear in the street
And set a good example for the children.
We must have friends to dinner and read the papers.

But maybe I ought to practice a little now?
So people who know me are not too shocked and surprised
When suddenly I am old, and start to wear purple.
Jenny Joseph

Er, Op I just saw your age, I really must RTFT properly! 43 is not old!!

ShatnersBassoon · 18/01/2017 21:32

I know a woman in her 70s with purple hair. She's a bit Su Pollard generally, and she's never happier than when people give her a second glance. She likes making a spectacle of herself Grin

magoria · 18/01/2017 21:35

i am 48 and even fatter.

No one looks twice that I notice.

Go for it

sillypussy · 18/01/2017 21:41

I'm 47, fat, got my most recent tattoo last year, and in the last 3 years my hair has been blonde, red, Brown and also had purple highlights. Now I have bought a bright purple hair dye and will be colouring my hair next week. I'm planning on growing old disgracefully. So colour your hair and enjoy the feeling of liberation it will give you.

jaketweeneyistooadvancedfor2 · 18/01/2017 21:47

I'm 45, fat, tattooed (first two more than twenty years ago, my third last year) and I have side shave haircut. Do it, like others have said, if you don't like it just recolour it.

biscuitkumquat · 18/01/2017 21:53

Never too old.

I'm 45 & I love mine. I get compliments all the time. I'm no supermodel, but I absolutely love it.

Sorry, this was the one I meant to post!

GissASquizz · 18/01/2017 22:00

I'm 38 and use Live xxl ultra violet. I do it every 4 weeks to keep it bright. I'm a receptionist in a respectable, mainstream business. Nobody has ever laughed.

Fink · 18/01/2017 22:03

I refer you to: Grapespotting and In praise of the women who wear purple

I'm already a purple fan and not old enough to be part of the trend. As soon as I have a job where it would be acceptable, I'm dyeing my hair.

Maz2444466 · 18/01/2017 22:05

Do it!!! You'll love the change

citybushisland · 18/01/2017 22:06

My mum is 83 and has bright pink hair at the moment, it looks fab! Go for it.

HSMMaCM · 18/01/2017 22:09

My mum is 78. She has purple streaks.

mylittlephoney · 18/01/2017 22:09

39 day and have had purple hair for at least 10 years. Go for it! Life is too short for dull.

MOIST · 18/01/2017 22:15

I am a grape.

GreenAndWinter · 18/01/2017 22:17

Red wine, I was thinking of that poem.

I would dye my hair purple if I had the skin colour for it. I'm going with slightly grey at the moment, but will go a ridiculous shade of orange within the next few years.

Op, please do dye your hair any shade you want@

misskatamari · 18/01/2017 22:22

Go for it! I have purple hair (well it's sort of blue now and changes often), and it's ace! I'm sure you'll look great and love it!

minionsrule · 18/01/2017 22:42

It worked for the evil minions, but their hair was also a bit wild - go for it

RestlessTraveller · 18/01/2017 23:53

Just turned 43, I have (dyed) grey with bright purple roots.

Brokenbiscuit · 18/01/2017 23:56

I thought of the Jenny Joseph poem too, Redwine. I think 43 might be a tad too young, if anything, OP.Wink

glitterazi · 18/01/2017 23:58

Do it! My honest reaction if I saw you at 43 and fat and sporting purple hair? (Your words not mine lol)
"Cool, love the hair!"
Since when did having purple hair have a weight and age restriction on it?!
Go for it.

glitterazi · 18/01/2017 23:59

biscuitkumquat love it!
