Too old for purple hair?

Please be brutally honest.

Is it really wrong to be 43 and a bit fat and planning purple hair?

I'm not thin, glamorous, pretty or confident but quite fancy a bit of purple in my life. But H and D (neither of them very D) tell me it would be ridiculous. This actually makes me more likely to do it but will the world laugh at me?

Do you need to bleach it first? I tried to dye my hair purple without bleaching and it didn't show up at all. I used the Schwarzkopf one pictured above.

PlymouthMaid1 · 19/01/2017 13:22

I am waiting to be old before I dye my hair pink and purple as I can't have funky hair at work.

isitnotsummeryet · 19/01/2017 13:32

I'm fat and nearly 43... have purple hair, had pink hair, red hair and black (along with blonde and brown too!) have a decent job ( senior manager type role) in a professional area... all i have gotten is compliments. life is too old not to be fun!

SallyGinnamon · 19/01/2017 13:37

Judging by the people walking up and down our high street today it's not exactly unusual nowadays!

NennyNooNoo · 19/01/2017 13:44

I am 43, have pink/purple hair (covers the grey) and a nose stud. No one will bat an eyelid.

gamerchick · 19/01/2017 13:51

Well what colour where you before you started? You need to go as light as possible first to get a really bright colour.
And do a patch test man!

I'd love to go mega purple but my hair is naturally dark and doesn't do bleach without turning to straw sad

Mines the same. It makes me feel sad looking at the photos. I'd to go really really bright.

PersonalClown · 19/01/2017 13:51

This thread has given me the push to ring my hairdressers and see about getting rainbow underhair.
And maybe some more piercings ( after my next blood donation)

TheTapir · 19/01/2017 14:02

Last weekend at the age of 39 (nearly 40) I had mine dyed purple at the hairdressers. It's not very intense and is graduated so the ends are brighter and the roots are a fairly natural colour. I totally love it. Occasionally I do have a moment where I don't think that I am outgoing or brave enough for purple hair but then I catch sight of it in a mirror and it makes me smile.

PopGoesTheFuckingWeasel · 19/01/2017 14:09

I'm 34, so a bit younger than you...but why should you give a flying fuck what anyone else thinks?

Too old for purple hair?
PopGoesTheFuckingWeasel · 19/01/2017 14:11

Personalclown I need to know more about rainbow underhair? 😁

Dee03 · 19/01/2017 14:13

I'm
43 and I have short purple hair...everyone comments on how nice the purple is and how it suits me...I'm not changing it anytime soon Wink

FondantNancy · 19/01/2017 14:18

You hope people saying "I've only ever had compliments" realise that lots of people won't or don't like it but are unlikely to march up and say "I fucking hate your hair".

I find a lot of fashion just awful, or think some cars are obnoxious, but I would never say it out loud. Basically anything you wear or do is going to be disliked by someone, it's not a reason to avoid doing something you really want to do.

Mistykit · 19/01/2017 14:23

Go for it :) my mom is late 60s and dyed her hair pink a couple of years ago

NameChanger22 · 19/01/2017 14:24

I'm older than you and I have pink in my hair.
You're never too old to have your own unique style.

Hellmouth · 19/01/2017 14:24

I miss having purple hair.

I'm Afro Caribbean and usually get extensions though :D been wanting to do it for a while but it literally takes all day and I don't have time for that! :(

Go for it, if you haven't already, I haven't read the whole thread sorry lol :)

iamapixiebutnotaniceone · 19/01/2017 14:34

You absolutely should do it! I'm 30 and did mine pink, my 78 year old grandma liked it so much she did hers too. It looked amazing on her!

CheshireChat · 19/01/2017 14:41

Fink- even if you have light blonde hair it's preferable you bleach it as that makes the hair a lot more porous and the dye takes better and lasts longer.

I used to use red semi permanent dyes on my black hair and it got a tint but that's it.

FlyingElbows · 19/01/2017 14:49

I'm fat, 40 and have pink and black hair cut well and dyed by a professional. I've been colouring my hair since I was 15 but I'd seriously recommend that you have a hairdresser do it if you want to be purple. It'll have to be lightened and you run tge risk of doing your hair serious damage if you do that at home. I know, I've done it. It took two days to lighten my hair enough to be all over box dye pink and I lost loads of it in the process (and looked like Jimmy Saville half way through!). Now the nice colour specialist does it and I don't risk being accidentally bald(er). Coloured hair looks great but I still think you need the good cut rules that help us all out when we're getting a teeny bit older. It's worth it.

RosieRuby · 19/01/2017 16:41

My immediate thought was aren't you too young for purple hair! If you fancy it, do it, you only live once and you van change it back if you don't like it x

PollytheDolly · 19/01/2017 16:51

Agree with FlyingElbows.

I have mine professionally done, it barely fades and doesn't get dry or frizzy at all (and I have naturally coarse hair).

purpleprincess24 · 19/01/2017 17:31

I had mine dyed purple for my 50th birthday and I loved it

whatsthepointofmorgan · 19/01/2017 17:34

I've notice that purple hair and the granny chic silver that's popular at the moment only look really good on people who have an excellent cut, especially if the style is short.
It doesn't look so good on messy hair that's never been near a pair of scissors.

whatsthepointofmorgan · 19/01/2017 17:36

It doesn't matter how old you are, as long as your hair isn't too long and is styled well, purple will look good.

Schwifty · 19/01/2017 18:28

Do it do it do it (pics please!)

KayTee87 · 19/01/2017 18:31

Go for it but consider getting it done professionally.
