To think this is fairly normal?

My DD aged 6 plays with dolls a lot. She also watches you tube videos of other kids playing with dolls. Not excessively.. maybe 2 hours in a week.
Anyway some of these videos are stories of how the dolls are kidnapped by a baddie then rescued. Usually by a prince.

My DD has become obsessed with kidnapping, capturing, tying up dolls etc. It features in most of her play.

Others have commented that it is strange, and it makes them feel uncomfortable. I think it's fairly normal. What are your thoughts?

I used to play "war" when I was about that age. Either with my barbies or running around in the playground with my friends. At that age, I think I had a basic concept of war being dangerous, but I definitely didn't understand all the trauma which can actually result from it. I'm not sure I even knew that it was something that was still happening, as I would have known about it from history and stories. I imagine that OP's DD has a similar understanding of kidnapping, meaning that she doesn't see it as horrific in the same way that adults do.

So, to summarise that long paragraph, I do think that playing games with "scary" things in them is normal.

I can't see the link, but I would definitely monitor your DD's youtube usage closely or even stop it. But the play, imo, is normal.

Summer, thankyou and apologies for being abrupt. My honest view goes against the majority on the thread. My DD is not 'girly ' and would prefer her babies to be encased in sellotape or bound with wool, other than her imagination there's school, adverts and even children's programs to be an influence . I do see the you tube videos as being a big nope , from the one I watched there were links to others involving blood and limb loss whic I don't think is appropriate!! I do also wonder if the responses you've Had would be the same if DD was a ds -waits for the torrent of 'of course' - I would set up your privacy controls and closely monitor tv time ad see what happens over the next few weeks.

pretty normal. I dont see a problem. princess is captured locked in dungeon, prince comes to rescue. Same scenario with mutant turtles, he-man, shera and so on.
