I simply cannot understand the circumstances by which someone leaves a car in a neighbour's driveway for 24+ hours.

I can't understand why you would ever park in a neighbour's driveway without permission, but bearing in mind that she had done, the circumstances were that she was blocked in and didn't have the nerve to knock and ask them to let her out of their own drive, especially as she suspected they would be out the following day and she could sneak along and move it then.
