Using flat sheets on the bed, who's right DH or me?

Please help settle a discussion between DH and me!

There's obviously little more satisfying than getting into a freshly laundered bed, especially if the sheets have been ironed.
To do this regularly I don't want to have to wash and iron the duvet cover every time I wash the rest of the linen ( I've 3dc and plenty other housework to do!) If I use a flat sheet then the duvet cover keeps fresher for longer.

As an aside, I actually prefer to have the flat sheet anyway as I feel it covers me better and no cold air can get down the bed!

So AIBU to use a flat sheet when making the bed?

(Snuggles down into cosy bed!)

I also have a top sheet.

So people who get tangled up, did you also get tangled in sheet & blankets, or aren't you old enough to have slept in them?

MLGs · 10/01/2017 21:37

I can't bear a flat sheet between myself and the duvet. That sounds melodramatic but I can't sleep if there's one. I can't stand anything tucked in, or anyone pinning down any part of the duvet.

I think I may have some sensory issues though Grin

I can't sleep with a top sheet, it's so uncomfortable! I have to remove it before going to bed if I'm somewhere away from home.

AlcoChocs · 10/01/2017 21:44

MLGs I'm the same with duvet, and definitely got sensory issues. Can't bear feeling labels and seams and close fitting clothes.

winefortea · 10/01/2017 21:47

Surely the only point of a flat sheet is to prank someone with an apple turnover? Grin

5OBalesofHay · 10/01/2017 21:52

7 sets each bed and service wash and iron works for me.

AuntGertrude · 10/01/2017 22:10

We use a flat top sheet but only in the summer when it gets really hot and you don't need the duvet for half the night but it's still nice to have a cover of some kind. In the winter it feels like too much of a faff and you get wrapped up in it.

Mindtrope · 10/01/2017 22:11

7 sets for each bed? I have 2 or 3 for each bed. I don't iron.

llangennith · 10/01/2017 22:29

I didn't realise anybody ironed beddingHmm Why?!
The king size duvet cover dries over the bannister, singles in dryer.
OP why not buy a bigger (next size up) duvet if you feel the cold coming in under it?

PinkSwimGoggles · 10/01/2017 22:35

in the summer when it's really hot like one night every decade we just sleep with the duvet covers.
the best solution against drafty tunnel: separate duvets.

BadToTheBone · 10/01/2017 22:37

YANBU I gave a top sheet between me and the duvet, I only wash the duvet cover every other time, much easier. I don't iron though.

WhoKn0wsWhereTheTimeG0es · 10/01/2017 22:41

Diddl - I'm a top sheet tangler. I haven't slept under sheets and blankets for 40 years, my parents were early adopters of the "continental quilt* as it was then called.

deste · 10/01/2017 22:41

I prefer a top sheet because like you I don't want to wash the Duvet cover each time.

JessieDoops · 10/01/2017 22:43

This made me laugh reading all the comments. When I first got with my partner, I stayed over at his parents house and they had a top sheet under the duvet... I thought this was bizzare and they were the only people in the world that did this.

Obviously not Confused

WashBasketsAreUs · 10/01/2017 22:45

Same as above, Badtothebone.
I get hot and throw the duvet off but the sheet is just enough until I get cold and pull the duvet back over again.

5OBalesofHay · 10/01/2017 22:46

7 sets for a week. 10 minutes max to change. Lovely hotel bed every day. I like to do this. Teenagers sheets their business but they can have fresh whenever they want .

SmellyChristmasCandles · 10/01/2017 22:56

At the moment we have fitted fleece sheet on mattress. Fleece flat sheet between us and duvet. Cotton duvet cover. I've never been comfortable without a top sheet. In the summer we have cotton sheets, but always a flat top sheet.

CantChoose · 10/01/2017 23:24

Can't stand not having a flat sheet. It's either too breezy or too hot.
I still wash the duvet cover though...

EBearhug · 10/01/2017 23:26

I have just had to replace my car. Please don't post links of bedding I covet but can't afford. Grin

SchnitzelVonKrumm · 10/01/2017 23:28

MIL does this. I HATE it.

yummycake123 · 10/01/2017 23:38

Flat sheets?
Ironing bedding??
Nah. We just have a fitted sheet and then the duvet!

Isyss · 10/01/2017 23:43

learnt what a flat sheet is lol

BBCNewsRave · 11/01/2017 00:08

MLG I can't stand anything tucked in, or anyone pinning down any part of the duvet.

Me too, horrible feeling! Sibling with sensory issues likes to be practically tied into bed though. Confused

This thread has reminded me why I'm single about numerous ex's who would insist on having their arm outside the duvet, thus clamping it in their sweaty armpit . Just, why?? Had to wash duvet cover every time, so maybe a top sheet would be a good idea after all...

QueSera · 11/01/2017 00:31

Definitely a huge no to the flat sheet!
Never even heard of this before!!
Duvets are cosy and snuggly, i cant imagine a weird flat sheet getting tangled up and in the way! Goes entirely against the whole concept of a duvet!
