Using flat sheets on the bed, who's right DH or me?

gotitwrongagain · 09/01/2017 23:29

Please help settle a discussion between DH and me!

There's obviously little more satisfying than getting into a freshly laundered bed, especially if the sheets have been ironed.
To do this regularly I don't want to have to wash and iron the duvet cover every time I wash the rest of the linen ( I've 3dc and plenty other housework to do!) If I use a flat sheet then the duvet cover keeps fresher for longer.

As an aside, I actually prefer to have the flat sheet anyway as I feel it covers me better and no cold air can get down the bed!

So AIBU to use a flat sheet when making the bed?

(Snuggles down into cosy bed!)

Yabu. Flat sheets under the duvet are awful and very uncomfortable. I just get tangled up in them.
I don't iron any bedding.

DataColour · 10/01/2017 09:46

We have fitted sheet, flat sheet and then duvet.

YANBU, it does save on washing the duvet cover that often and it's nice and cosy. I realise not a lot of people do this and I find it does bother me when I stay at someone else's or in a hotel witn no flat sheet....just feel like there is something missing.
All the kids beds are made the same way too.
But we don't iron bedding.

DataColour · 10/01/2017 09:47

Also, how can you be "between the sheet" with no flat sheet Smile

Purplebluebird · 10/01/2017 09:47

Huff, my in laws have flat sheets when we stay there. I can't stand it :P

OneWithTheForce · 10/01/2017 09:52

Please tell me people do have winter and summer sheets?)

The right kind of people do Wink

HouseworkIsASin10 · 10/01/2017 09:58

YANBU flat sheet here in the summer only though.

When it gets too hot we have a flat sheet then duvet. Duvet gets kicked off, sheet is fine on it's own.

I used to iron bedding but realised life is too short.

TondelayaDellaVentamiglia · 10/01/2017 10:00

I do this on our bed and for any naice visitors**. Although it confused the ILs ...one gets in on top of the top sheet and one gets in underneath and all hell breaks loose.

but the children never liked it, so they stink up their duvets and put up with it.

in the interests of fully answering the op, I like a fresh made bed, but cba to iron so YABU to iron but YANBU to use a flat sheet.

and I have a mahoosive washer, but your laundry won't wash properly if it all crammed it. So it's two loads for our bed ( three if I do the mattress cover) duvet cover+matching pillowcases, then sheets and the under pillowcases.

**I have a Visitor status list system.....similar to the Listed building set up, but that's not the discussion here.

Flat sheet plus thin blanket in summer, duvet cover only in winter (though I do have a blanket at the feet end to stop drafts getting at my toes). DS, on the other hand, loves that swaddled/cocooned feel and insists on a tucked in top sheet below the duvet.

KoalaDownUnder · 10/01/2017 10:11

OneWithTheForce - I got them on an online discount site in Australia, a couple of years ago - not much help, sorry!

They were still around $150 hugely discounted, IIRC, but sooo worth it.

steppemum · 10/01/2017 10:20

horrible horrible, can't bear anything between me and the duvet, it is just a recipe for getting all tangled up.

I remember with a sinking heart staying in places with sheets and blankets not duvets, and I always hated it. Making bed in the morning a right faff too.

Give me my duvet every time. On it's own, soft and snuggly.

OneWithTheForce · 10/01/2017 10:21

Thanks koala. I'll have a nose around online and see what I can find. Dunelm mill have some that aren't massively expensive. I just need the £££ to buy them Grin

WhoKn0wsWhereTheTimeG0es · 10/01/2017 10:28

I hate top sheets with a passion, it takes no time at all to remove and replace a duvet cover, our washing machine easily takes kingsize bottom sheet, duvet cover and 4 pillowcases without cramming.

Oldraver · 10/01/2017 10:35

I've been doing this for years as I once moaned about a duvet cover ending up faded compared to the curtains and a friend suggested a top sheet so as not to wash the duvet cover as often.

Plus I like the look of a nice sheet turned back over the duvet...plus when I'm feeling hot I can chuck the duvet off and still have a covering

scottishdiem · 10/01/2017 10:35

I didnt know people had top sheets outside of hotels. This is very new. I mean, my gran had ye ancient bedding of several itchy blankets when I was very young and the only heating was a coal fire but she got central heating put in and then bought duvets.

I also dont get the washing thing. We wash our pillow cases (four), the bed sheet (fitted) and the duvet cover every weekend and put fresh ones on. What would a top sheet add to that apart from enclosing me in a bed like some kind of horrendous cocoon?

shovetheholly · 10/01/2017 10:38

Maybe buy a bigger washing machine, so you can fit the duvet cover and sheets in one wash? Smile

scottishdiem · 10/01/2017 10:38

Although it confused the ILs ...one gets in on top of the top sheet and one gets in underneath and all hell breaks loose.

Never mind the inlaws, this would happen in my house every night. We go to bed at different times and we dont have a turndown service and so getting into bed in the dark would cause havoc.

jerrysbellyhangslikejelly · 10/01/2017 10:43

I love a flat sheet!! Couldn't just have the duvet cos I love feeling that crisp cotton 😁 What do you in the summer when you get too warm in the night? Have to have a flat sheet then you can just push down the duvet and still be covered. I don't do it to save washing, the duvet cover still gets washed every week but it's sooo worth it!

RegTheMonkey1 · 10/01/2017 10:46

I never knew this practice existed!

Plifner · 10/01/2017 10:47

I have never in my life ironed a sheet or duvet. I love my bed and sleep perfectly well.

Plifner · 10/01/2017 10:49

^^ what she said

JC23 · 10/01/2017 10:51

YABU
I can't imagine how bored I would have to be to start ironing sheets.

BertieBotts · 10/01/2017 10:53

I don't like the way they feel. They work better with blankets IMO. Duvets are supposed to be snuggly! You lose the snuggliness if you put a sheet under it.

I would love an ironed duvet cover but ours are too big and take about three hours so I don't bother.

BarbarianMum · 10/01/2017 10:54

I hate, hate, hate this (my MiL does it and she's perfect in all other ways). YABU. Conmpletely, totally and utterly. HTH

confuugled1 · 10/01/2017 11:19

Never been aware of the term flat sheet before - always thought of them as sheets or fitted sheets. And sheets can be used as top or bottom sheets whereas fitted sheets are just used as bottom sheets unless you are having a washing/laundry nightmare...

I'm definitely a top sheet hater - you end up much colder if you have a top sheet as you can't snuggle your duvet around you plus you get all tangled up.

Dsis always uses a top sheet and puts one on the bed for us if we stay. We always take it off as we can't sleep properly with a top sheet on. She gets upset because she thinks we are making extra work for her. I reckon that as we take the top sheet off and fold it up before we get into bed she doesn't need to wash it. She thinks we are making her wash the cover so more work. I argue that even with a sheet as you get so tangled so you'd get your feet on the duvet cover anyway so you'd need to wash it anyway, especially for a guest bed as you wouldn't leave it on for a different guest. She doesn't get tangled in a sheet I guess so gets frustrated we don't just sleep 'properly' with a sheet and duvet. We end up both thinking that each other is unreasonable.

I've been brought up that top sheets are for using when you have sheets and blankets not duvets.

cantpickusername · 10/01/2017 11:28

I had never come across top sheets until I moved to this country, I grew up with a duvet and duvet cover.

The first time I ame across one was when visiting MIL and she had made our bed using a top sheet. Only problem was that she did not put a duvet cover on the duvet at all!

So the bed was made with a top sheet + "naked" duvet.

I remember thinking it was gross and spent all nighty trying not to accidentally touch the duvet.

(MILs house is generally dirty so could only assume duvet was too.)

So for this reason, I now hate top sheets.
