Using flat sheets on the bed, who's right DH or me?

Please help settle a discussion between DH and me!

There's obviously little more satisfying than getting into a freshly laundered bed, especially if the sheets have been ironed.
To do this regularly I don't want to have to wash and iron the duvet cover every time I wash the rest of the linen ( I've 3dc and plenty other housework to do!) If I use a flat sheet then the duvet cover keeps fresher for longer.

As an aside, I actually prefer to have the flat sheet anyway as I feel it covers me better and no cold air can get down the bed!

So AIBU to use a flat sheet when making the bed?

(Snuggles down into cosy bed!)

YADNBU! My BF reintroduced this to me, I'd forgotten how wonderful and cosy it is.

MitzyLeFrouf · 09/01/2017 23:48

Me too Craic!

OneWithTheForce · 09/01/2017 23:48

Even worse than being tangled up in a loose flat sheet, is having one tucked in limiting foot movement. YABsoU smile

Noooo! That was how you knew mum had washed your bedding! You had to lose weight to get into bed Grin

Lovelybangers · 09/01/2017 23:49

I currently have a fleecy flat top sheet under the duvet.

Fitted sheet on the bottom is fleecy too.

Angry not angry face but warm and glowy :)

FannyWisdom · 09/01/2017 23:49

Love a nice tucked in bed.
Nothing cosier.
With flannel in winter and cotton in summer.

I'm airing the knitting ready to go on top if it snows.
YANBU

I hate flat sheets. They twist and wrap around you and try to tip you onto the floor in the middle of the night.

NapQueen · 09/01/2017 23:50

Yanbu to want a flat sheet.
Yabu to iron your bedding

littleducks · 09/01/2017 23:53

How small is your washing machine if sheets and duvet cover don't fit in together?

Amethyst81 · 09/01/2017 23:54

I didn't know people did this! I must be a slattern too because it never occurs to me to iron my bedding I just get a duvet cover straight from the cupboard and use it with a fitted sheet on the mattress Shock

previously1474907171 · 10/01/2017 00:00

Until recently I used to have a flat sheet, then a cellular blanket, then the duvet and on top of that a cotton candlewick bedspread (cat hairs). On cold nights I would sometimes put another layer on the top but when I got too warm I could just peel some of them off until it was just right.

I stopped because I found it difficult to replace my flat sheets after getting a new bed, and I don't like fitted ones, I have a deep mattress and for some reason no-one makes fitted sheets, or flat sheets for that matter that actually fit. I only use cotton, not polycotton which doesn't help. So my flat sheets are on the mattress and none spare for the top.

WidowTwonky · 10/01/2017 00:01

I'd recommend you get some extra bedding if you need to wash, dry and remake on the same day Wink

pimmsy · 10/01/2017 00:02

Love a flat sheet!

I do flat sheet on mattress, flat sheet, duvet in duvet cover covered with cotton over sized bedspread.

I iron the sheets not the duvet cover and the pillow cases and the bolster cover.

MargotLovedTom · 10/01/2017 00:03

Flat sheets go against the ethos of the duvet. Can you imagine sexy French types faffing around with an extra sheet?

But Mitzy - a sheet is faaaar sexier. Think of all those movies where our hero and heroine are lying in post coital bliss: they always have a sheet artfully draped over them, they're never bundled up in a 13 tog duvet. Sheets are also de rigeur for sexily wrapping around oneself when getting out of bed obviously nobody does this toga type thing in real life. The French would just sashay around naked though, the naughty buggers.

SealSong · 10/01/2017 00:03

Ugh no, I hate top sheets under duvets. Hate having my feet trapped. They're second in unpleasantness only to those weirdy hotel duvet covers that have a long flappy section at the bottom that's tucked under the mattress. Now those are weird.

CockacidalManiac · 10/01/2017 00:04

Who the hell irons duvet covers?

lbsjob87 · 10/01/2017 00:04

Iron. Bedding. Nope, you've lost me....
Washed and folded until needed is all anyone gets in this house.

I have never heard of a flat sheet as well as a duvet, only instead of when it's hot.

Seems complicated, what are the advantages?

Redglitter · 10/01/2017 00:04

previously Have you tried Next. I got deep fit Egyptian Cotton fitted sheets from them and they have matching top sheets

Freyanna · 10/01/2017 00:05

I always have a flat sheet under the duvet too.

TheCraicDealer · 10/01/2017 00:10

I don't like fitted ones

Why Previously? I couldn't be annoyed with a flat sheet on a mattress, all those corners.

One of the main reasons I'm marrying DP is he's in the forces and so knows how to do hospital corners. That way if there's ever a catastrophic elastic shortage our bedding will still be cosy and presentable AF.

Enkopkaffetak · 10/01/2017 00:10

I don't like top sheets. However I only use flat sheets for our beds. I don't get why any likes the fitted ones for making beds/ They are hard to use keep slipping off with dh's tumbledrier sleeping movements. And impossible to fold once ironed (and yes I need them ironed)

Blueraccoon · 10/01/2017 00:10

My mum used to do the flat sheet under duvet thing and I thought she was the only person in the world who did it. It was unbearable! All tangled up in it and it did nothing to protect the duvet cover as the flat sheet was all scrunched up.

SouthWestmom · 10/01/2017 00:10

Wow I thought flat sheets were instead of fitted sheets. No idea they went under duvets and over bodies.

However this thread has reminded me of my beloved granny who made my childhood holiday single bed with a sheet, another sheet, a blanket and a bedspread and left a digestive biscuit and an orange juice for me in the morning. Thank you!

BeachyKeen · 10/01/2017 00:19

Op, You are right!
It is cleaner, and nicer.
Bottom fitted sheet, then flat sheet , then feather bed in a duvet cover goes on top

alltouchedout · 10/01/2017 00:20

My mum always does the top sheet under duvet thing and is visibly discomfited by a bed made up any other way.
We do it at the beginning and end of 'summer' (using that term in its loose, North West England sense) when you might want a duvet and might not. I always get tangled up though.

OneWithTheForce · 10/01/2017 00:20

Grin Grin Grin

previously what size is your bed? Couldn't you just buy a size bigger? So if your bed is a double then buy a king size sheet? I work in a homewares store and lots of people do this. We also do extra deep fitted sheets.
