Using flat sheets on the bed, who's right DH or me?

Please help settle a discussion between DH and me!

There's obviously little more satisfying than getting into a freshly laundered bed, especially if the sheets have been ironed.
To do this regularly I don't want to have to wash and iron the duvet cover every time I wash the rest of the linen ( I've 3dc and plenty other housework to do!) If I use a flat sheet then the duvet cover keeps fresher for longer.

As an aside, I actually prefer to have the flat sheet anyway as I feel it covers me better and no cold air can get down the bed!

So AIBU to use a flat sheet when making the bed?

(Snuggles down into cosy bed!)

Yes, you can wash a duvet.

My grandmother used to only ever air eiderdowns though (those silk looking quilted things with feathers), but they were only ever on the uppermost layer on top of the blankets and flat sheets.

We had the very same battle moving in together! Dh was adamant just the duvet, I always had a flat sheet and loved it, BUT, I spent weeks all tangled up in it because he would pull it out form where I had it all tucked in and I couldn't handle that so I gave up!! Couldn't imagine having one now, embrace the duvet!!!

I hate the top sheet thing. I don't see the point, if the sheet needs washing then the duvet cover will too. PIL do the top sheet and when we slept in their bed the sheet was clean but duvet cover smelled like armpits. It's not difficult to strip and wash all the bedding.

I have washed all my feather pillows over Christmas and New Year. I need to take the duvets (king size) to a cleaner, as I don't have in industrial-sized machine. I think about doing this far more than I actually do it... They do get a good airing from time to time, especially if it is a hot summer day.

I'm the same as you! I always use a flat sheet and may skip a wash of the duvet cover as it doesn't need it. Handy as well, when I'm hot I fold the duvet down but am still covered by the sheet. I don't iron though, folding them neatly and the creases seem to disappear when I come to use them. Depends what you're used to I suppose.

Hellmouth me too lol

Love a top sheet - YA definitely NBU

TheDogsMother · 11/01/2017 17:31

Flat sheet - YABU. It seems so old fashioned having one with a duvet. Either sheets and blankets OR a duvet but not a bit of both.
Ironed bedding - yes definitely. Who doesn't love crisply ironed bedding to slide into.

slummamumma · 11/01/2017 17:33

blimey and ironing?! FWIW, I use a flat sheet as a bottom sheet but nothing gets ironed! If you're happy and do the work I don't see the problem TBH!

Jaxhog · 11/01/2017 17:34

YASNBU. We started using a flat sheet 10 years ago and haven't looked back. Once the duvet has been scrunched up and a pet sleep on it, you'll want a flat sheet too.

to the TheCraicDealer -I'd much prefer a fitted sheet butwe have a waterbed, and fitted sheets don't fit. Flat sheets only, no choice.

slummamumma · 11/01/2017 17:34

PS: I have also found that king size feather duvets wash (and line dry) in normal sized drum it's the pesky "quick dry" manmade ones that have to be dry cleaned/launderette

DozyDorissimo · 11/01/2017 17:39

I use a flat sheet on the bottom next to the mattress as they are bigger and easier to fit that elasticated fitted ones IMO.
I don't use a flat sheet under the duvet, no.
I know some hotels and holiday cottages do and that always worries me as I think they aren't changing the duvet cover in between guests :(

I wash the sheet and duvet cover weekly and iron them.

100milesanhour · 11/01/2017 17:44

I get cold if I use a flat sheet under my duvet (not that I can find any in superking size)

Perfect for the summer though, keeps me cooler. I have to sleep with covers no matter how hot it is.

JugglingMuggle · 11/01/2017 18:55

Can't bear having a sheet tucked in around my feet. So restrictive. Hated it as a child. Hate it now. Loathe it in hotels and its therefore the first thing I do when I get into a hotel room - pull all the bedding out from under a mattress. Plus they always make it too low down on the bed. So uncomfortable!
