Just that, really? For how many people and does that include cleaning stuff/toiletries? Just stuff bought in supermarkets/online/small shops etc not including any meals out/coffees etc. We seem to spend a lot and I'm beginning to think IABU about the amount... Interested to hear what everyone roughly spends.

£80-£100 a week for me and 5yr old.

Snowflakes1122 · 06/01/2017 20:00

Family of 5 and spend about £160 a week.
This is bumped up by eating organic though.

TeaAndBisquits · 06/01/2017 20:01

Were a family of 4 and spend approx £220 month. One big shop with the toiletries, cleaning products and washing stuff etc.
Then 3 weekly shops at approx £45/50 a go.
Id easily be able to spend a bit more, but it's just not in the budget at the moment.

TeaAndBisquits · 06/01/2017 20:02

Two adults and two children (2 & 6)

Laska5772 · 06/01/2017 20:04

Loads... Dh and I + one cat (and then various guests/ adult children/DGCs and whoever turns up during the month ) . I budget £500 a month.

However that is for everything inc toiletries . household cleaners and Wine (which we do buy a lot of).

We always cook from stratch though (inc baking bread etc) and eat very well. I do buy meat and eggs from farmers market or 'high welfare' But we dont eat meat every day , have lots if veg i meals and are are all slim (ish) .

These threads never cease to amaze me! Is it a competition about who spends the least? Because it is clear that everyone who spends less than £50 per person per week as an absolute minimum on here is lying through their teeth. Or saving us the whole truth. Whichever is less politically incorrect ;).

early30smum · 06/01/2017 20:07

Harrypottersmagicwand- depends on your definition of frivolous I suppose? We are in an expensive area of the UK where activities are expensive. On the other thread I have already stated that we can afford DD's activities, that she genuinely loves them all, and that we would cut back if necessary for whatever reason, e.g. if our DS wanted to do more or if we were financially strained. Yes I do spend a lot on food and could probably cut back but nothing is wasted. I don't buy anything much for myself and sometimes say no to social things because I'd rather spend the £ on other stuff. This is not to say I don't have my own life and friends, I very much do. I think it also depends on your finances and circumstances. Compared to many of my friends I spend pretty modestly but compared to others I spend a lot. As long as we can afford it and I'm not wasting anything or buying stuff for the sake of it I don't see the problem. However I did ask if I was BU to spend so much on food so obviously accept that some people think yes and some think no.

About £40 for 2 adults shopping in Aldi. However one is heavily pregnant and one works a very physical job so probably eating too much at the moment.

Fucking ell, haha. Absolutely unbelievable. Unless sarcastic ;)

Laska5772 · 06/01/2017 20:11

I also batch cook , so a lot of meals (say tonight which was lamb tagine made with stewing lamb from butchers) will feed about 6.. We ate a portion each and then 4 portions will go in freezer.. If we have friends/DCs /family drop in ( which we do quite often) we then usually have a meal ready we can give them

JiltedJohnsJulie · 06/01/2017 20:12

Because it is clear that everyone who spends less than £50 per person per week as an absolute minimum on here is lying through their teeth. So I'd have to spend £200 pound a week, £860 pounds a month on food to appear honest?

Think I'd rather be called a liar and keep the extra cash myself thanks Grin.

Disraeli · 06/01/2017 20:12

£120 a week. Family of 5. Includes packed lunches and nappies for 2. I look for offers but don't particularly skimp on things.

happynewyearchum · 06/01/2017 20:19

I'm impressed! I spent £10 on tea for two adults tonight...!

UsedToBeAPaxmanFan · 06/01/2017 20:20

Family of 4 adults (2 sons aged 18 and 20). Also 2 cats. We spend about £80 - 100 a week on Tesco (home delivery) for food, cat food, toiletries and household stuff plus about £10 per week on top-ups from the village shop (eggs, milk, bread) and between £20 and £40 a week in the village butcher/deli for all meat and cheese.

That's for all meals - we all take packed lunches. DS2 is doing a very strenuous manual job and is eating us out of house and home!

We also buy wine separately from a wine merchant, but not a huge amount. Maybe £80 a month on average?

So I guess in total probably an average of £150 per week. We've got a comfortable household income, so don't need to get it down but probably could if we tried.

Jaimx86 · 06/01/2017 20:21

We spend way too much for two people, but don't think about what we buy. I know we could save a lot of money, but we like to pick up whatever we fancy.

LadyVampire · 06/01/2017 20:22

Family of 4 and we do £250ish a month and it includes toiletires, cleaning etc (food & living budget we call it). We tend to go over to stock up on formula.

LobsterQuadrille · 06/01/2017 20:22

I was the 50p a week for a cat. A very much loved cat but she eats only dry food, either Sainsbury's £1.30 ish a box, which lasts her just over two weeks and she's fed twice a day. Lots of water. Basics cat litter but she is outside a lot. I feel really mean after reading about other people feeding cats frozen fish!

Caprianna · 06/01/2017 20:26

Family of 5 and 2 cats and we spend around £200. We don't eat meat but buy lots of fresh ingredients and cook and bake everything from scratch. We buy hardly any alcohol. We shop with ocado and top up from the co-op.

DeliciousIrony · 06/01/2017 20:27

2 adults, and we probably spend £90 per week between us on food, toiletries, household products and alcohol. Shop at Morrisons.

Fairylea · 06/01/2017 20:27

I find these type of threads so interesting. Food budgets seem to bring out so much scrutiny and judgement. Nowhere else would you have people saying they spend xxx on something, which they can afford to do, and other people sounding horrified and telling them they're wrong. Grin We all have different priorities and different ideas of what makes life more comfortable / affordable if you need to or healthier if that's what you're interested in. Variety is the spice of life as they say!

limon · 06/01/2017 20:27

About £50 a week - two adults and dd 5

Stingray2008 · 06/01/2017 20:29

50-60 for a family of 5

NameChanger22 · 06/01/2017 20:31

About £40 for a family of two with two pets. That includes everything - toiletries, cleaning products, pet food. I did spent about £60 a week over Christmas though, but bought quite a few luxuries.

I keep the costs down by having a spreadsheet which tells me where to buy cheapest for nearly every product I buy. I buy multiples of that item when I'm in the right supermarket. I shop about twice a week and stick to a list. I shop mostly at Tesco, Aldi and Asda, sometimes M&S for bargains, never Sainsburys. If an item is expensive, or costs more than another shop I just don't buy it. I'm vegetarian, DD eats fish or meat about 4 times a week.

Rixera · 06/01/2017 20:32

Under £50 a week is lying? Ha ha ha ha ha.
Clearly you have not been served my marvellous value kidney bean, value chopped tomatoes and value rice chilli.
UHT milk, value teabags, shop at the end of day for reductions.

When you have to, you make do.

Bettyspants · 06/01/2017 20:36

Actually I guess the shop adjusts slot depending on if I'm trying to cut down on wine.... and if we get a load of game meat (rabbit duck pheasants) which is really cheap or free for us .although I know a lot of people turn up their noses at it I'd buy free range meat all the time if I could but tends to be pricier and I love knowing exactly where it's come from! Then batch cook and sorted for freezer meals for ages.

Stingray2008 · 06/01/2017 20:37

Haha if we spent £50 per person per week we wouldnt afford our rent!
