Just that, really? For how many people and does that include cleaning stuff/toiletries? Just stuff bought in supermarkets/online/small shops etc not including any meals out/coffees etc. We seem to spend a lot and I'm beginning to think IABU about the amount... Interested to hear what everyone roughly spends.

We spend a lot on food. There's 4 of us including ds aged 4 who has asd and will only eat about 4 different things (under care of dietician) and dd aged 13 who eats like a horse (as well as dh). We spend easily about £200 ish a week. Sounds ridiculous written down but when you add in various snacks and treats and all sorts of things that make life easier (like microwaveable rice and stir in sauces etc) it soon goes...! In our defence we don't go out ever and don't drink or smoke so eating whatever we like really is our only vice if you can call it that. We budget £200 a week for food. We are a low income family too. We just like to spend a lot on food...!

Dionysuss · 06/01/2017 19:02

Lois no alcohol. We get gifted tons of it at work, PIL who own company don't drink so give us their share. BiL works for a drinks company gets bonuses in alcohol, and he doesn't drink either. My drinking has been funded for many years now.

I shop at a mixture of Morrisons and aldi. Breakfast is always cereal and evening meals and planned and bulk batch cooked often.

A neighbor has an allotment and gives us lots of veg.

Dionysuss · 06/01/2017 19:03

Evening meals are planned I mean. We don't eat cereal for two meals!!

WritingHome · 06/01/2017 19:05

We spend a lot on food. I love to cook & we eat very well. We are all very slim. There are 3 of us, 2 adults 1 11yr old child, 2 small dogs & 1 cat.

We spend approx 100-120 a week on food. We eat all meals at home. We shop mainly in aldi & get fruit & treats in m&s. We don't eat many ready meals though sometimes I buy the fuller for longer range if they are on offer for myself. Still cook for dh & dd though.

I honestly don't know how some people can cook for families on tiny budgets.

I would love to read a sample of a weeks worth of meals.

Family of 6 and a cat, about £120 per week at Tesco. Covers all food, household items, nappies etc. Occasionally do a midweek trip for 'bread' and end up spending another £50 🙈😳

Bettyspants · 06/01/2017 19:05

Too much....family of 4 sometimes 5 try and keep to 100 often goes to 150

WussyWat · 06/01/2017 19:05

2 adults, 7yo and 2yo, usually between 70-90pw including top ups of milk and bread. Usually near the top end if cleanin stuff/toiletries are needed. Shop at Asda mainly for convenience.

pandarific · 06/01/2017 19:16

For cat owners I would highly recommend the Aldi brand select (highest quality) wet cat food. It's approx 44% meat per flavour unlike felix/whiskas at approx 4% and is cheaper.

BitchQueen90 · 06/01/2017 19:20

I spend about £60pw. Just me and 3 year old DS here though. I could probably spend less but I refuse to scrimp on food, I like decent quality meals and I usually cook from scratch. Shop mostly at Tesco and Asda.

scaryclown · 06/01/2017 19:22

Less than £30. Usually £20.

ElinoristhenewEnid · 06/01/2017 19:22

DH & me approx £95 per calendar month for food and cleaning products plus about £120 per calendar month for alcohol, takeaways (1 per week) and restaurant meals (3 per month).

TheDowagerCuntess · 06/01/2017 19:33

We spend about $350 a week (I guess that is about £175). That doesn't include dog food. Family of five.

Includes basic toiletries - shower gel, toothpaste, etc. Not moisturiser, DH's shaving stuff, or any of my make-up, hair products, etc.

Doesn't include wine, beer.

Artandco · 06/01/2017 19:35

How can a cat only cost 50p a week?

About £120 a week here. All ocado, Waitrose or local organic butcher.

I do think £200 a week if your on a low income is a little silly though TBH. Dropping to £100 would be a £400 saving per month to actual use doing stuff, going fun places or overpaying mortgage.

Titsalinabumsquash · 06/01/2017 19:39

Family of 5 ( 2 adults with big appetites, 2 teens/pre teens with hollow legs and 2 littleuns)

We spend £100 a week max, I get fruit/veg/meat box from Abel and Cole for £60 (makes meal planning a doddle!) and then I use the £40 for bread/milk and lunchbox stuff and toiletries.

Cleaning products are purchased in vast quantities from Makro about twice a year.

thewookieswife · 06/01/2017 19:39

Oh dear - have to hide this thread from my DH as I spend approx £750 to £800 a month for the three of us ... [walks away, hanging head in shame !! ] Blush

WussyWat · 06/01/2017 19:42

Wookie Shock can I be nosey and ask where you shop and what sort of things you cook on that budget?

LagunaBubbles · 06/01/2017 19:45

Probably about £200 a week, me, DH and 3 DSs aged 23, 14 and 9. And a rabbit, hamster and a turtle!
Weekly shop is usually split between Asda or Morrisons and Aldi.

Titsalinabumsquash · 06/01/2017 19:45

We were at that figure Wookie, with all the best intentions in the world if I'm left to my own devices I spend £££ in Tesco 3-4 times a week! 😱 that's why I have to have something 'set' delivered, I used to get Hello Fresh meal boxes but now we do the A&C thing because it creates a nice round figure that's easy to stick to each week.

OnePlanOnHouzz · 06/01/2017 19:51

Waitrose - just normal food - I don't eat meat but DH and DD do ... so spend a bit on fresh fish I suppose ...
I'm going to have to do meal planning I think ...

thewookieswife · 06/01/2017 19:51

Forgot to change name ! Lol !

HarryPottersMagicWand · 06/01/2017 19:52

Not sure, DH does the shopping. I have budgeted £300 a month for 4 of us. Not excessive but we don't go without anything and we have meat.

You spend a lot. The places you shop will not help with this.

Given your other thread on spending as well, you are pretty frivolous with money.

SheldonCRules · 06/01/2017 19:53

About £300 a month for four and abot £50 on cat food/litter etc.

MyGirlDaisy · 06/01/2017 19:55

Family of 4 including 2 sporty teen boys with massive appetites and a large dog, probably averages 150 p/w, Tesco online shop every week then topped up at Sainsbury's and Aldi, I cook from scratch mostly and we eat healthily, use own brand products etc but can't seem to get it any lower.

mrsBeverleygoldberg · 06/01/2017 19:55

£120 a week.
3 cats
1 dog
2 ds
2 adults
Includes all toiletries and cleaning products.
It's so hard to keep to this budget. We're mainly vegetarian as meat is so expensive. We shop in Aldi and top up wherever. I try not to take the dcs with me as I find it hard to say no to them!Blush

teaping · 06/01/2017 19:56

We spend about £70-80 a week from Sainsbury's for 2 adults. We do both love to cook though and eat everything from scratch with lots of fresh veg and good quality meat. We could definitely cut down considerably if we tried!
