Just that, really? For how many people and does that include cleaning stuff/toiletries? Just stuff bought in supermarkets/online/small shops etc not including any meals out/coffees etc. We seem to spend a lot and I'm beginning to think IABU about the amount... Interested to hear what everyone roughly spends.

Around £500 -£550 a month, two adults a teen, a 12 year old and two primary age children. For all cleaning stuff, toiletries, weekday lunches and prob one weekend lunch. We eat out,/get a take away four times a month average which is extra.
Shop at Costco, Morrisons online and instore, M&S, butcher and bakery and Wilko/Iceland

tierny · 07/01/2017 19:08

2 adults and 3 teens - £150 a week at least. I'm shit at meal planning, when working but giving up work soon and plan on being more organised and having a proper plan and shopping list rather than wandering aprons aimlessly picking up food that looks nice - or easy ! We throw away far too much becasie of my lack of planning.

Approx £120, plus approx £30 at the butcher. For four of us including two teenagers, DD2 is a vegetarian.

This does not include three top ups for milk, bread etc.

newpup · 07/01/2017 19:16

Sorry, shop at Waitrose and M & S. Top ups at Waitrose or Co-Op.

Sung · 07/01/2017 19:23

Loads - at least £200/wk
For 2 adults, 1 teen, 2 dogs
Mix of Lidl/Waitrose/Butchers/Riverford (mainly WR)

Then go to the Tesco on the corner various times a week spending #]#+]€>€{}+]*\ I'm not sure

There's two of us and two teenagers who are here half of the week with various boyfriends and girlfriends

Blush

Need to plan more.

Any meal planning tips? What do people have for tea? We always have spag bol, chicken pittas or salmon/chicken veg etc

MoonlightMojitos · 07/01/2017 20:14

Wow... looks like we are spending too much and I had no clue. We spend around £70 a week for the 2 of us.

SilentBatperson · 07/01/2017 20:16

I don't really have any meal planning tips I just sort of do it in my head as I go, if that makes sense? Have a think about what might need using up before we go, what we have a lot of or none of. It must be a lot harder if you don't know who you're feeding and numbers change each night.

Our menu is fairly unvaried at the moment because of one fussy bugger of a DC. There are a lot of different ways to do salmon and veg or chicken and veg though! Salmon and veg could be traditional English with new potatoes and hollandaise sauce, or Asian style with chilli greens.

Or for example if you're roasting a chicken, I guess there might not be a lot left if there are potentially 6 of you and 2 are teenagers, so I'd be planning on boiling the carcass for stock and either having risotto the next night, or soup (you may prefer this for lunches). If you like spag bol, would you also enjoy a tomato and oniony mince curry? I prefer this to the more traditional keema. If you like chicken pittas would you go for something with pork? If you like spag bol, perhaps other tomato based pasta dishes which also gives the option of a veggie night?

Libitina · 07/01/2017 20:18

Between £80-100pw for three adults inc cleaning stuff and toiletries.

ThisIsWhatICallMyName · 07/01/2017 21:40

We spend around £140 a week for 2 adults and 2 cats.

TinklyLittleLaugh · 08/01/2017 00:54

Those of you who don't meal plan, do you end up chucking lots of stuff out? I tend to shop for about five days at a time. At the end of day five my fridge and fruit bowl will be pretty much empty (though obviously I will have tins, dried stuff, baking stuff etc still in.

I really like to have all the fresh stuff consumed and to start again. My kids hate it though; they seem to think the fridge should be magically full every day.

Artandco · 08/01/2017 07:51

We don't meal plan and don't waste anything either. Fridge is usually never empty as we refil before it's completely clear

startwig1982 · 08/01/2017 08:01

Between £70-£90 for a family of four from Morrisons.
Always meal plan, dc both have lunch at school/nursery, although ds is about to swap to packed lunches.
We have at least one veggie meal a week.

However, I think we could spend less if I used up all the stuff we have in the larder!

londonrach · 08/01/2017 08:10

I can shop for everything in ldll for £30-40 per week, meat every night and veg, all work sandwiches and cleaning stuff etc but no alcohol, chocolate etc. We did that for 3 years. We eat very well on that! I hate pasta so we had rice, potatoes etc. If you liked pasta you could live on £10 per week easy per person. Slightly more money since leaving london so i spend around £60 per week on everything with ldll/Tesco being my main shop. Look for special offers. This week ldll got cod at £1.99. Got massive half wheel of stilton for 90p in date till feb. I cook from scratch. For example. Ldll pork which usually costs just under £2 and a pack will do two meals. Lightly fry the pork then place in oven with abit of stilton on top to finish it off. Veg is cheap so loads of that in a steamer and two jackets and you have a cheap, very tasty meal. 2 adults one ff baby whos weaning at the moment.

We've just changed the way we shop and meal plan significantly to stick to a budget, cut time, but also to stick to a low carb diet for 2 adults, and. A healthy diet for a 5 year old boy.
We have a lids in our town, but 2 full time jobs. Love lids but the veg didn't last long enough and it meant we were spending loads on top up shops.

So we now:
Go to Lidl once a month and bulk buy stuff with a long shelf life and cleaning / toiletries. Cost £130.

Spend max £75 a week at Ocado ( fruit, veg, meat, fish, some dairy, specialist stuff like coconut oil).

This is breakfast, lunches and dinners for 2 adults and a five year old.
We actually have too much in the freezer right now. So next week will be £50 ish.

Our weekly meal plan for evenings is:
Sunday - roast chicken ( organic / free range) with veg ( roasties for DS)
Monday - Thai stir fry with left over chicken with veg for us, rice for l
DS.
Tuesday: cottage pie (cauliflower mash for us, potato mash for DS)
Wednesday: meatballs with courgetti ( spaghetti for DS)
Thursday: salmon with greens, fishfinges with greens for DS
Friday: slow cooker meal and veg, chicken Kiev plus peas for DS.
Saturday: moussaka for us, spag Bol for DS using same meat.

I cook bigger portions and freeze half.
So at the moment I have 2 stews and three portions of mince ragu in the freezer.

Lunches for DH and I are homemade soups with salads ( mozzarella, Parma ham from Lidl) or egg muffins.

DH was diagnosed with pre diabetes and we have found a low carb high fat diet effective in reducing his blood sugar to normal.

I have breakfast on my commute to work, DH has Greek yoghurt and blueberries and homemade nut granola at home. DS has cereal, porridge or toast.

missfliss · 08/01/2017 08:35

^Lidl not lids... Stupid auto type Grin

badg3r · 08/01/2017 08:40

About £60 a week for two adults and DS (2). That includes nappies and most of our lunches for work, but not food for when people come round for dinner etc. We don't drink much at all and only eat meat a few times a week which has made a difference.

JustSpeakSense · 08/01/2017 09:29

£150 per week (2 adults, 2 hungry teens) a dog and cat.
