Fucking Alexa

Just want to smash her face in.

It's the reasonable and pleasant tone of voice. Makes me sounds like even more of a haranguing nag than I already am.

DH is making this a Big Deal.

I'm considering giving him an ultimatum. Alexa or me.

Fucking twatting gadgets. Sick of them all.

Your Alexa plays adverts? Mine definitely doesn't do that.

TheFairyCaravan · 06/01/2017 18:01

DS1 bought DS2 an Alexa for Christmas. I was bloody glad when Alexa went back to uni with DS2.

Unfortunately DH is buying us one for our birthdays. Once I get used to it I might like it a bit more.

Alfieisnoisy · 06/01/2017 18:30

Ah I see, you need loads of expensive gadgets to go with it,

As you all were then...my money doesn't stretch to all of that.

Niggit · 06/01/2017 18:48

SaucyJack I've just asked her... Grin

Scrounged · 06/01/2017 19:00

I don't see the point in them really, but have never got into toys for adults

😂 Well that told us.

However, you should probably know that they are not actually toys. Some people may use them with no real purpose but plenty of people such as myself find them genuinely useful. It may seem gimmicky to the uninitiated but things like location based reminders are really useful.

SleepingBooty · 06/01/2017 19:18

I love Alexa but it looks like I'll need to pay for Spotify or Amazon Music to get full use of the music. However I've just been inspired to find other things she will do. Magic Door looks good, the bedtime story was funny.

pipsqueak25 · 06/01/2017 19:21

former i agree, what if alexa does get hacked ?

Serialweightwatcher · 06/01/2017 19:22

Since it arrived this afternoon I can't get it to play the playlist I have created on Amazon Music and I didn't realise it doesn't actually remind you of anything unless you look on the app or ask about the calendar - I thought it would tell you to take the chicken out of the oven etc if you set a reminder Confused

JessieMcJessie · 06/01/2017 20:02

No adverts on ours so far...weird you get them.

Sallystyle · 06/01/2017 20:06

Mine is really thick.

She never understands me the first time. She can't hear me if she is playing music at a reasonable volume so what's the fucking point? I want to be able to ask her to play a different song without having to walk over the turn her right down.

She really struggles with the word UB40.. how does UB40 sound like Bruce fucking Springsteen?

pklme · 06/01/2017 20:09

It's not adverts I get so much as an offer to let you buy something that you have asked for which she can't get.

Smitff · 06/01/2017 21:11

Yes that's the advert I'm talking about.

I don't want to be "offered the opportunity" to buy anything more than I already am.

Pernicious, wicked little thing.

I may just drop some hot soup on her by accident, seeing as DH insists on keeping her in the kitchen ... Hmm

Madcats · 06/01/2017 22:23

Smitff and pklme are you in the UK? My "dots" sometimes get a bit flustered but have never suggested anything.

I hope this isn't Amazon's plan to make us pay for ad-free once we all get hooked.

karmacoma1 · 06/01/2017 23:22

I went round to my best friends house who has one.

We were having a conversation about roxy in eastenders, and her drug problem.

One of us said the word 'cocaine' and that creepy effing Alexa bot pipes up with "can I order for you?!" 😳

Creeped me right out. Was far too 'humans' like for me (tv series).

ExplodedCloud · 06/01/2017 23:43

You can rename Alexa to something else.

JessieMcJessie · 06/01/2017 23:45

There are 2 other wake word options (one is Echo, forget the other) but you can't just give her a name of your choosing.

aaahhhBump · 06/01/2017 23:47

We changed the name to Echo as felt Alexa was a character from Dallas. 4 year old calls it daddy's friend and asked for it to read her a bed time story.Confused I love it, makes mornings easy. Echo alarm goes off,

Me - Echo, good morning
Echo- Good morning [insert random fact of the day].
Me - Echo, set alarm for 45 minutes
Echo - I have set an alarm
Me - Echo add milk to shopping list
Echo - I've added to your shopping list
Me - what's the weather like?
Echo - The weather where you are is taps on -6oC but dry.

All this while making breakfast and dressing kids. Shopping list is in the Alexander app on DH's phone he's home before me.

Smitff · 07/01/2017 01:38

I'm in the US.

This is the source of a long list of problems, which is now just a little bit longer.

Reminder to the folk slagging this off as a lazy persons gadget that it's also super useful for those with disabilities and mobility disorders because you've clearly forgotten how many pairs of hands you wished you had when carrying a newborn

But I too have been shown up by her immediate obedience. My DP would be so lucky if I did as I was told a fraction of the time, let alone so happily! Grin

VimFuego101 · 07/01/2017 02:42

The volume thing drives me crazy too, U2. DH loves her, it's like the obedient wife that I am not Grin

iminshock · 07/01/2017 02:50

I love her

FaintlyBaffled · 07/01/2017 03:43

I have amazon prime but pay for Deezer for music because I'm too lazy to search for all my music again on amazon which Alexa is not compatible with. This is the one thing that's really stopped me splashing out but now I've read she can link to my Fitbit...

pklme · 07/01/2017 06:53

Madcat UK.

We have Amazon prime, and ask for random music rather than music we own IYSWIM.

So I'll ask for Chris de Burgh Spanish Train album, and if it isn't on prime she offers to buy it from Amazon.

I say no and we move on. It doesn't bother me.

Anniegetyourgun · 07/01/2017 07:13

you can't just give her a name of your choosing

Like HAL, for example?

SecretSeven · 07/01/2017 07:18

I find her, and Siri, and that Google woman, a bit creepy.

I will switch on my own devices, thank you.
