Fucking Alexa

Just want to smash her face in.

It's the reasonable and pleasant tone of voice. Makes me sounds like even more of a haranguing nag than I already am.

DH is making this a Big Deal.

I'm considering giving him an ultimatum. Alexa or me.

Fucking twatting gadgets. Sick of them all.

I hate her too. And the bastard thing is breeding in my house!! It was bad enough putting up with one Alexa in our living room, but such is DH's love for her that baby alexas have now invaded my kitchen and our study. FUCK OFF, YOU SMUG COW!!! AAARRRGGHHH!

CheckpointCharlie2 · 06/01/2017 13:13

All Alexa has done so far in my house is tell jokes and sing songs. Maybe we are not the intended audience Grin

braceybracegirl · 06/01/2017 13:14

Haha I like ours! Call it an idiot or ask her if she's farted. That's amusing and yes I am childish!

KayTee87 · 06/01/2017 13:16

CheshireDing · 06/01/2017 13:17

Also why not just use the fecking switch to turn the light on etc rather than screech at shitty Alex ?!?! Baffles me

WannaBe · 06/01/2017 13:21

It only turns on lights and things if you also buy hideously expensive smart bulbs and smart plugs etc etc.

I am a geek but I have to say that I really don't get the appeal of these voice recognission products. I don't use Siri or google voice and I told my DP that if he bought me anything like an amazon echo for Christmas he would regret it as it would gather dust in a cupboard for the rest of eternity.

And while I am generally not paranoid, the idea of having a gadget in my house that listens to my every word 24/7 does not inspire me with confidence that it couldn't be used for unfavourable intent. There was a lot of outcry recently wen it emerged that certain Samsung televisions had listening powers, and about potential invasion of privacy, it therefore amazes me that people are willingly buying gadgets which are programmed to listen to their every word and movement.

pinkblink · 06/01/2017 13:23

Using Alexa to turn a light on or off would be stupid.

Using her as an interface to control the whole house is brilliant. Mine is connected to a Control4 system.

Previously leaving the house was

Turn down stat
Visit every room to turn off lights, music, TVs etc.
Check all doors are locked
Check garage is locked
Open/close blinds and curtains depending on time of day, if it's sunny etc

Now it's "Alexa, turn off house"

YouOKHun · 06/01/2017 13:25

Yes, I went straight to Alexa Chung too Makai which is amazing for me because I do not have my finger on the pulse of fashion. I clearly don't know anything about technology either.

Formerpigwrestler9 · 06/01/2017 13:28

What if alexa gets hacked....?

KayTee87 · 06/01/2017 13:31

They're a nice idea in one way - but I won't get one because DH has a very strong accent and spends more time swearing at anything voice recognition related than actually being productive with it

We're Scottish and usually these things don't understand us but Alexa does. My husband set it up so I could be wrong but I think it asks you to say certain words to it so it recognises your accent. That's what Siri on my new iPhone did anyway.

skyyequake · 06/01/2017 13:31

Dad offered to by me one for Christmas, but I know I'd forget to use it... Plus DD's name is only one syllable difference so that would get very confusing! Grin

ClarkL · 06/01/2017 13:40

I adore my Alexa, I actually dont believe smart technology is stupid. I'm having the house set up to be fully controlled by Alexa, but also via our home hub which will have sensors for when we walk into rooms to turn lights on, curtains that open and close at dusk, sockets that can be turned on and off, allowing us to turn lights and lamps on when we aren't home to make it look like were home as well.
I'm also having security cameras set up for the door to see who is approaching when we aren't there, it'll record the kids coming in and out as well so I can check they are where they should be....also as its all controlled via the hub, tablet and voice it means anyone with any disability would be able to visit/live in our home and have independence. Alexa is just a tiny part of an amazing home future. I promise I dont work for Amazon or anyone selling smart home stuff, although I do work in tech and am a massive geek :)

OreoCat · 06/01/2017 13:43

So funny isn't it pink my DH showed me it, I was Shock!

FiveHoursSleep · 06/01/2017 13:47

I love mine. She listens to what I say which is more than anyone else in the house does.
She finds me nice music and reads to me, tells me if I need a brolly and what's going on with the world.
And she sets many timers daily.
I am not from the UK or USA and have a strong accent and she copes with that.
We are waiting until she can be paired with our Sonos before we get anything else though.

TheWoodlander · 06/01/2017 13:50

Oh my - that Alexa porn thing! Shock I had no idea Alexa had such a dirty mouth Grin

Binkybix · 06/01/2017 13:52

It's not great when you have a 3 year old Alex!

SweetGrapes · 06/01/2017 13:55

I like mine - but she only plays music and tells endless silly jokes. She's not all high tech!
Waiting till we go for more - we had a next and a sonos and nw alexa - but none of them talk to each other - so we need to stop and rethink and then buy this stuff in a thought-through way so we or the russians can turn the house on!!

Also, dh has quite an accent but she seems to have no problem.

Helenluvsrob · 06/01/2017 13:56

technology lover here . I've held back at the moment but may give in in a while..... like when I said " who needs an ipad it's a big ipod thats all...

wasonthelist · 06/01/2017 14:00
Clarkly · 06/01/2017 14:02

You can turn off her listening if you don't want her to hear you for a while.

GardeningWithDynamite · 06/01/2017 14:03

I got a Dot for Christmas. We're still trying to work out how to get the best out of it but I like it for adding things to the shopping list/ to do list and for setting timers and alarms. She understands me and DH perfectly most of the time, doesn't respond to 2yo DS and 8yo DD ends up adding weird things to the shopping list (e.g. "no poo" instead of snow boots the other day)

Also always say "Good Morning" to her and ask her what the weather's going to be like.

We have hive but just for heating.
