Just that really! Emojis are everywhere and it just dawned on me there are so many yet everyone uses the few mumsnet ones. I'm still relatively new so many there's some code or something I'm missing? Blush 😬🤔🤔

Because we are adults and this is not Net huns mums which is ----> that way

RortyCrankle · 06/01/2017 15:37

PS - a [boring] or [zzzzzzzzz] smiley on MN would be soooooooooo useful.

BuntyFigglesworthSpiffington · 06/01/2017 15:39

The strike out function. That's for really mature adults...

TheMortificadosDragon · 06/01/2017 17:04

The strike-out is perfect for parents, we're always having to self-censor or mutter sotto voce comments IRL.Grin

TiggyCBE · 06/01/2017 17:06

Because many years ago I learnt to use words.

BertieBotts · 06/01/2017 17:38

I wasn't being arsey Confused just pointing out some stuff.

Yes, the smileys used on msn etc were emoticons, they were little graphics. If you copied and pasted a sentence on msn which had an emoticon in it the image wouldn't copy across. Emojis do copy across because the computer sees them as text.

FizzBombBathTime · 06/01/2017 18:19

Well your post came across as arsey when my mention of emoticons was light hearted.

There's always one.

Scrounged · 06/01/2017 18:45

Well I use emoji because I'm an adult who doesn't give a shiney 💩 what other posters think. I don't use emoji if I'm at work or in important correspondence but, just in case some posters haven't noticed, this is a only a chat forum. Other than MNHQs official rules we can do what we like.

Telling off other posters for not compliling with some imaginary group rules is pompous and rude. It's fair enough to politely point out that a post is difficult to read but other than that posters should keep their opinions to themselves.

1horatio · 06/01/2017 18:53

I do. They're useful to convey tone (especially if your first language isn't English)

So, it's more likely thst people will understand that I was joking, being sarcastic etc..,

BusterGonad · 06/01/2017 19:11

💩🍷🎅🏿🎅🏼👶🏻🍒🍒🤓😍😥😁😂☠️☠️💀👹😈🙏🏻👄💅🏼👁💁🏿👩‍👩‍👧‍👦👩‍👩‍👧👨‍👨‍👦‍👦I love emojis!!!

Sparklingbrook · 06/01/2017 23:26

posters should keep their opinions to themselves. No opinions on MN? Confused Shock

Lweji · 07/01/2017 03:19

It's a very ironic statement. Or should I say, opinion?

Sparklingbrook · 07/01/2017 06:11

Yes Lweji it's saying 'my opinion is that posters should keep opinions to themselves' Grin

MN talk may as well not exist if that's the case. AIBU would be a bit tumbleweed.

TheNaze73 · 07/01/2017 07:16

Because they're for W⚓️'S

JeepersMcoy · 07/01/2017 07:40

I keep wanting to use Hmm in emails at work. It is the best ever emoji and really we should start a mumsnet campaign to get it available everywhere. All other emojis are sad and pointless in comparison.

Cliffdiver · 07/01/2017 09:53

Cherry and jeepers

Yes!! I tend to use 🙄 or 😒 in place of Hmm in many a text to DH.

Scrounged · 07/01/2017 10:34

Fair play, saying keep their opinions to themselves did sound silly. 😂 (Perfect time for a crying with laughter emoji). I just find the patronizing rude comments about stuff that doesn't matter such as using emojis a bit pathetic.

Booboo66 · 07/01/2017 12:13

So the actual answer appears to be that they are not easy to use on a computer or show up well! I admit to feeling a bit embarrassed that I forgot people even used computers for casual internet purposes.
My reason for asking was not because I think they should be used (thanks for the snooty message suggesting I move to netmums Hmm) but I had actually assumed they didn't work as I'd never seen them at all and hadn't even attempted to enter one, then saw one pop up within a thread therefore asked this question.

The 'because we are adults' answers don't seem relevant as I know countless professionals in their 40's who have embraced the emoji. I agree with a few posters though in that none of the 100's on my phone convey a feeling quite as well as Hmm or Blush

I much prefer MNing on my laptop to on my phone - I can type better and I can read more.

NicknameUsed · 07/01/2017 12:45

Same here Trills. I only MN on my phone when out and about. I don't get silly auto corrections on my laptop either.

Trills · 07/01/2017 12:45

My favourite emoji is 😒
emojipedia.org/unamused-face/
This face is not amused. This is not a face of sadness, it is more of a grumpy, displeased look. Used to express dissatisfaction.

Trills · 07/01/2017 12:46

It's not Hmm though

Booboo66 · 07/01/2017 13:24

No, but I don't think 😒 Is trying to be Hmm. 🙄 Is a better equivalent. But Hmm definitely conveys it better!

OP posts:
Trills · 07/01/2017 13:28

That's not a bad eyeroll 🙄

I don't think that unamused is the same as hmm, just saying that they are my favourites of the two categories :)

SoDownSoGone · 07/01/2017 13:46

This one is weird 🤤
