Just that really! Emojis are everywhere and it just dawned on me there are so many yet everyone uses the few mumsnet ones. I'm still relatively new so many there's some code or something I'm missing? Blush 😬🤔🤔

I really hate them. People seem unable to write a sentence on Facebook without an emoji these days.

FizzBombBathTime · 06/01/2017 09:29

Anyone else remember and miss the days when they were called emoticons?!

Watch out the mumsnet police have arrived

I love an emoji. They are a great example of just how amazingly creative we are at finding new ways to communicate. Though (as you can see from the comments so far) they are very 'tribe' specific.

They are hard to use on mumsnet because you have to 'code' them, so if you want to use one you have to actually think about it...

But they are a way of adding non-verbal communication to written communication - and it's something we have always done just in different ways. Think of punctuation marks- the ellipse for example ..., and the development of the exclamation mark.

The evolution of the emoji is quite interesting really. Grin

My only regret about emojis is that you don't get Hmm and Confused programmed into your phone to use on Facebook when someone posts a questionable status 😊 I tend to use my phones smiley face as its quicker than going into the emoji keyboard on MN 😊

RancidOldHag · 06/01/2017 09:45

If your device reads them only as squares/squiggles, it's not a case of guessing whether one square looks like a tongue or not. It's guessing from nothing.

The general lack of emojis, and general preference for ordinary English, makes MN a hell of a lot easier to use than many sites.

I really hope that doesn't change.

WorraLiberty · 06/01/2017 09:48

Some people get a bit snobby/silly about them but I like them.

However, I don't tend to MN much from my phone or tablet so I stick with the MN emojis.

I use emojis a reasonable amount on Facebook (through my phone, not if I'm on my computer) and imessage/whatsapp, but they're not the best way to get a point across. What I think an emoji means is up for interpretation, and if people are on different devices they can look quite different, which doesn't always have the same impact as you think it will have. When they release new emojis, they go to iOS first, then roll out across other platforms. So even if you have an iPhone/iPad, it's reliant on you having done the latest update, and if you're on Google/Samsung/LG then tough you just need to wait.

The mumsnet Smileys look the same on all devices/computers.

SoDownSoGone · 06/01/2017 09:54

👍🏽😜 I don't see why not? Who rules the roost eh? Each to their own? Has Mumsnet HQ banned their use? Slightly controlling behaviour if they have! It's a face shows an emotion why not?! 🤔

Sparklingbrook · 06/01/2017 09:54

The tongue looks like a tongue on my phone but more like a bull with horns on my laptop.

Don't understand why you would ever need a painting nails emoticon.

I remember when the pictures were first allowed and I don't remember an outcry except for why are we limited to 6, but looks like that's upped now.

If a Like button is introduced I think that would be awful but although MNHQ keep saying no I fear it's only a matter of time.

NeedMoreSleepOrSugar · 06/01/2017 10:00

I got very frustrated trying to find Hmm on my phone a few days ago before it dawned on me it was a mumsnet one. Its so useful!

Olympiathequeen · 06/01/2017 10:00

I use them (except texts as they are charged as SMS!) all the time. They get used on mumsnet too but they are a bit laborious to construct.

So easy on iPad though 🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡

WorraLiberty · 06/01/2017 10:03

Some people just don't like change.

I remember the mini meltdown some members had over the introduction of 'trending' Grin

In fact every time HQ introduces a tiny change, you can normally guarantee the same handful of posters will be in Site Stuff complaining about it.

Sparklingbrook · 06/01/2017 10:14

Changing 'Most Active' to Trending was a bit odd. Not sure what was wrong with the former.

MNHQ never run things past their users. They just change it anyway. But now we have the one thing we didn't ask for- the weird '@' email thing. Confused But lots want a 'Hide Poster' option which never appears.

TinyTear · 06/01/2017 10:15

what I dont understand is why some people, instead of just using one like we do here on MN Grin always, always use 3 or 4 of the same emoji.

is it to show they are REALLY in tears?

WorraLiberty · 06/01/2017 10:25

I know Sparkling but honestly, the amount of whinging and whining was ridiculous at one point.

It's the same with the 'like' button thing and the 'hide poster'. So many people threatening to flounce if they ever get brought in.

Perhaps it's me but I can't even muster up a 'meh' Confused

Change happens and we get used to it.

beanfilledfish · 06/01/2017 10:30

The tongue will alwats be :p to me

Cherryskypie · 06/01/2017 10:36

Another one who keeps looking for Hmm elsewhere.

Sparklingbrook · 06/01/2017 10:36

I think the whinging could be avoided if MNHQ actually asked their users what they thought before bringing a change in. i know it's their site and they can do whatever the hell they like but just changing stuff and expecting everyone to be overjoyed is a bit naive.

Good job we actually have the most useful functions ever though. Hide Topic and Hide Thread, then all the whinging can magically disappear. Grin

llangennith · 06/01/2017 10:39

They weren't available on MN until a fairly recent update.

WorraLiberty · 06/01/2017 10:47

That's my point though Sparkling.

The hardcore whingers who don't like change, would just keep whinging over something as insignificant as 'trending' Grin

I'm surprised they caught on to the internet at all, given many wouldn't have had it 'back in the day' Grin
