Just that really! Emojis are everywhere and it just dawned on me there are so many yet everyone uses the few mumsnet ones. I'm still relatively new so many there's some code or something I'm missing? Blush 😬🤔🤔

I think the whinging could be avoided if MNHQ actually asked their users what they thought before bringing a change in.

Problem with that is that 97% wouldn't give a fuck one way or the other, 2.99999999% would welcome the change, and the same (statistically insignificant) people would keep starting threads in Site Stuff whinging that it happened and claiming that no-one wanted it.

(I do think that the @ poster thing was a bit random though - I genuinely haven't seen that requested anywhere!)

SomewhatIdiosyncratic · 06/01/2017 11:52

I use Grin a lot because my tone is usually intended to be irreverent and self depricating.

I've not worked out how to do all the fancy ones.

BlueFolly · 06/01/2017 12:05

My 7 year old dd is obsessed with them

They're childish.

BertieBotts · 06/01/2017 12:06

Just a few things.

Even if MN hadn't enabled them, since they were enabled on MN there has been an update to text and browser services meaning that they would appear regardless of what MN do.

Emojis and emoticons are not the same things. The name emoji comes from the Japanese "kanji" which is the name for the little symbols that Japanese uses rather than latin script. This is used because emoji are counted as text characters, not graphics. Emoticons are graphics. They look the same but behind the scenes are different.

In fact, emoji are a Japanese thing, not an Apple thing, and have existed for decades. Apple just included them in iPhone for the Japanese market and then it became easier to allow everyone to use them rather than keep them locked unless you had a Japanese sim card. Ta da, they became popular with apple users, spread to other platforms, and are now available almost everywhere as a kind of "universal emoticon".

No doubt there are some people on MN who would prefer if all this computer nonsense was done away with and that messages about parking wars and MILs could be sent to one another via carrier pigeon. Admittedly that would mean it would take several weeks for a thread to reach even 100 posts but it would be so much more mature.

FizzBombBathTime · 06/01/2017 12:39

Bertie if you used msn way back when, you would know the term kids used for the graphics on there was emoticons. No one used the word emoji; despite your arsey post.

ALLthedinosaurs · 06/01/2017 12:45

YallBU.

I do what the fuck I want.

💃😉

BusterGonad · 06/01/2017 12:49

My mums net fav is Confused and my phone fav is 💩! Just so you know!

Notso · 06/01/2017 12:49

What's the @ poster thing?

BuntyFigglesworthSpiffington · 06/01/2017 12:52

I think if someone tags you @Notso you will get an email notification. Not sure why, if they want a notification system surely it would make more sense for it to ping into your MN messages? But maybe it does that too I haven't really tested it.

TudorHouse · 06/01/2017 13:25

Can I be cheeky and ask someone to tag me to see if it works, Please?

BuntyFigglesworthSpiffington · 06/01/2017 13:27

Hello @TudorHouse

TudorHouse · 06/01/2017 13:31

Ooh! It works! Thank you, very cool!

QuinionsRainbow · 06/01/2017 13:44

😂✅😆😉😡😍🙄🙊😞☺️🙏😳😱🤔🤓😘👍😠☹️😷🙅🏽🖕🤑💃🏽😷😊😖🐍😅💩

All very well, but what does it mean?

Scrounged · 06/01/2017 14:00

I love using them and the fact that some MNs are sneery about them and say things like 'they are not used around here' make me want to use them more.

I once started a thread asking for MN to introduce a 😂 (Crying with laughter) emoji. You would have thought I'd suggested a kitten kicking competition based on some of the responses.

SarcasmMode · 06/01/2017 14:10

I fucking love emojis.

💗

Now have a 🍰 and 🍲 and look at 😼 on YouTube!

Honestly I'm not twee but I do like being robust on TNet!

The MN set has the best ones. Dragon Archers TardisBrew Chocolate

Pannnn · 06/01/2017 15:03
Bike
AuntieStella · 06/01/2017 15:12

Some tribes of teenage geeks still use the term emoticon.

(no, I don't know why)

Lweji · 06/01/2017 15:13

Because it's the correct term. Wink

RancidOldHag · 06/01/2017 15:14

Sarcasm

Are you offering wine and fags and suggesting one watches crap on YouTube?

Because there isn't enough context in your post to guess what you mean, and it might be quite different.

Lweji · 06/01/2017 15:14
Football
Lweji · 06/01/2017 15:16

MN just needs a [whistle] and a [devil] emoticons and it would be almost perfect.

SnatchedPencil · 06/01/2017 15:22

Because they look as stupid as text speak does on a web forum. A picture may sometimes say a thousand words, but an emoji usually doesn't. If you need to use a smiley face to get the message across, you probably haven't chosen your words very well, eg:

Mega LOLZ m8z!!!!! Grin
Whap ass yo skunk! Xmas Biscuit

It's just nonsense and is lazy.
