Just that really! Emojis are everywhere and it just dawned on me there are so many yet everyone uses the few mumsnet ones. I'm still relatively new so many there's some code or something I'm missing? Blush 😬🤔🤔

Also, some emojis don't translate well between devices. I can't see all on my Android phone.

So, don't use emojis (except the regulation MN ones) in place of important information. Use words.

80sMum · 06/01/2017 01:07

AGnu I agree, the MN ones are better. My favourite is Confused. It very often perfectly sums up my reaction to some posts on MN! Grin

Ice3 · 06/01/2017 01:07

I never MN from my phone.

The only emoticon I like is the 🐝 but I saw it on DH's computer the other day and it looked so wrong.

Booboo66 · 06/01/2017 01:15

I hadn't actually thought how they would look, or be applied from, computers. It seems obvious now but as I always use a phone or tablet I hadnt crossed my mind! Thankyou to all that gave helpful answers! Smile

I'm fond of an emoji or two

Personally, I'm not keen on them.

ScuttlbuttHarpy · 06/01/2017 01:56

Its not just emoji's....no one types LOL either....in fact I'm a massive loller and have to delete my lols before I post. Just very unmumsnetty.

FishlessCake · 06/01/2017 07:37

I've seen them on here quite a bit lately (so I immediately click off the thread if the op is using them Wink). I like the few mumsnet ones.

NicknameUsed · 06/01/2017 07:42

Isn't LOL a teenagers thing?

LooksBetterWithAFilter · 06/01/2017 07:56

I think lol shows your age now actually. All the teenagers I know haha now and it's all about Instagram. Facebook and lolling is for oldies.

Sparklingbrook · 06/01/2017 07:57

I can't make out the emojis, the three in the Op are teeny tiny squares. As are a lot of them in subsequent posts. When they are used in thread titles it looks really messy.

We aren't teenagers/ children and don't need colourful pictures because we can just use words Shock

Plus as a PP said Hmm is the best emoji ever.

RancidOldHag · 06/01/2017 07:59

Because not all devices read them properly.

In thread titles, they can really muck up the display of the whole active convo page.

comingintomyown · 06/01/2017 08:03

Another who thinks the only worthwhile one is (hmm)

meditrina · 06/01/2017 08:04

In the olden days, when it was all green fields, we knew which MNers used assistive technology to be able to access the Internet at all.

And text speak mucked that up. So as a measure based solely in community consideration for all its members, text speak became taboo on MN. And standard English was the norm - which also assists those who do not have English as their first language, and at least some of those with dyslexia.

I had rather assumed that the inability of some read the (non MN prehistoric) emoticons tended to disadvantage those with older or specialised devices. And that the same consideration would apply.

comingintomyown · 06/01/2017 08:04

See I never use them and it didn't work that's another reason I'm not keen !

RancidOldHag · 06/01/2017 08:05

If you're old (assuming that matters!) then LOL is 'lots of love'

beanfilledfish · 06/01/2017 08:06

you are being terribly unreasonable

Trills · 06/01/2017 08:09

Many people using MN are typing on an actual computer, with no easy way to input emoji.

The only ones that can be inputted just by typing are the MN ones, which are also the only ones that we can be sure will show up as intended.

study gives a clue as to how differently emoji can be interpreted depending on which phone you are using

Also there is no unicode equivalent for Hmm

MilkTwoSugarsThanks · 06/01/2017 08:10

I've been on here for over 10 years, never been on any other forum, don't have Facebook or Twitter - so emojis aren't limited to newbies or Netmums!

I like using them.

👍🏻😁😜

Sparklingbrook · 06/01/2017 08:14

In your line I have a hand, a teeny tiny square and two faces that I am not sure what they are conveying Milk. Confused

Trills · 06/01/2017 08:14

Better link to the study, sorry

Apple have since changed the look of their emoji, so that the grin is less grimace-like, but which one people see will depend on how up to date their Apple device is.

Trills · 06/01/2017 08:17

I have a plugin to allow me to see emoji on my desktop browser and even with that the skin tone modifiers don't come through properly

AIBU to wonder why nobody uses emojis on mumsnet?
RancidOldHag · 06/01/2017 08:20

You do get used to working out squares and squiggles by context.

Trills that second one that was a square is now a larger square with crinkly edges. Confused

No idea what that blob is NavyandWhite.

You do get used to working out squares and squiggles by context. But who has time for that?
