To never let my children eat roast chicken skin

So that I get it all to myself to scoff in the kitchen whilst carving the chicken? Crispy, juicy, amazing stuff. Not sure the kids even realise the chicken comes with a skin.......

Or even feather follicles
.
I knew that.

BubbleFairy · 04/01/2017 19:57

Oh mindtrope, I'm like Joey from Friends with KFC. Scoff the skin, plenty of chicken left for others Grin

I was about to do the Hmm face at you mind when I saw hair follicles

OverTheGardenGate · 04/01/2017 19:58

I wish KFC took the skin off before coating the chicken- that would be perfect

THAT is a totally INSPIRED notion.
And I've only just clocked who wrote it.
I feel quite amused.

AgainstTheOddsNo2 · 04/01/2017 19:59

My husband throws it away! It is therefore my duty to stand between him and the scraps bin on roast chicken day. He throws pork fat too!

LadyMumble · 04/01/2017 19:59

Yum, love the skin.

Does anyone know how to make the shards of crispy chicken skin that they seem to make with everything on Australian Masterchef? It makes my mouth water every time they serve it, but I've never seen the method and haven't been able to replicate through trial and error for fear of ruining all of the skin and having none left to scoff.

OverTheGardenGate · 04/01/2017 20:01

If it wasn't for North Indian garlic chicken, this thread could have swayed me towards veganism.

PaulAnkaTheDog · 04/01/2017 20:04

I wish you could have a chicken that's just skin. Skin, skin, skin. Fuck the meat.

Lweji · 04/01/2017 20:05

fitzbilly

You let them throw away the skin? Why?

AliceInHinterland · 04/01/2017 20:06

Have you ever had a GOOSE?
Phenomenal.
I'm intrigued by the Thai rub idea...

AliceInHinterland · 04/01/2017 20:08

I think chicken skin has collagen in which is good for your skin. I could be wrong - if I am I don't want to know.

MarmiteDoesYouGood · 04/01/2017 20:09

I was on the fence with stealing the chicken skin, but eating all the crackling is basically child abuse.

kateandme · 04/01/2017 20:09

bubble what a refreshingly brilliant post. go ahead have the skin. though here a trick my grandpa whispered to me." let them have there due if they must, then grab the chicken and turn it over.all the wettest yummiest bits are on the bottom of the chicken, basted meat lies there, wet meat and fatty bits" he actually said this with the biggest cheakies grin.i alwas laugh now when I turn over the chicken when we vist and its cleaned compared to other times and all the meat is still all on the bottom!

Farfromtheusual · 04/01/2017 20:14

Sometimes I consider roasting a chicken just for the skin.

Not going to lie, I've done this before. DP said I was a disgusting pig Grin (jokingly of course)

MiladyThesaurus · 04/01/2017 20:17

My PILs are weird and don't eat the delicious skin or the lovely fatty bits on anything.

MIL also dislikes anything with bones in it (or thigh meat even if it's been boned). So rather than buying a whole chicken, she'd purposefully serve us all skinless breasts. Sad

We had roast pork while they were staying with us and me and the kids got all the crackling because I hadn't anticipated that they wouldn't want crackling (DH has inherited his parents' foolish ways). Who doesn't want crackling?

BathshebaDarkstone · 04/01/2017 20:19

Me too Soub Xmas Grin

BrassicaBabe · 04/01/2017 20:20

Anyone tried the Nigel Slater recipe for chicken skin popcorn. A. Maz. Ing.

sparechange · 04/01/2017 20:23

DH doesn't like chicken skin

We had jerk chicken thighs for dinner tonight and he had to debone and de-skin his first, which meant I got to minesweep the crispy and spicy skin
Pure heaven

MrsKoala · 04/01/2017 20:34

I roast a chicken once a week for sandwiches and then eat all the skin to myself while stripping it and chopping it to put in the fridge.

The best is duck skin basted in orange juice and roasted till it's blackened. My parents cook duck this way but don't eat the skin and i get it all.

I usually eat a low carb high fat diet so i eat this guilt free. Sometimes my whole plate is fat and skin served with loads of greens.

Oooh just remembered whole poussin roasted and served with garlic and herb butter and fresh buttered peas.mmmmmmmm

Tartyflette · 04/01/2017 20:39

DS invented a new dish when he was a teenager -- he used the crispy chicken skin to wrap around small, hot, roast potatoes. Finger food of the gods.
In this house (three of us) chicken oysters, thighs and wings are fiercely fought over. The person who loses out on the oyster gets their first choice of wing/thigh.
The breast meat is least interesting best used in sandwiches. (With bacon, tomato, dill pickle and mayo. There's two of your five-a-day right there Grin )
As for the buttery, garlicky, sticky bits from the bottom of roasting pan (AKA chicken jam) we just pour them over the meat. Or spuds. Or scoop straight from the pan. Finger to gob.

thatwouldbeanecumenicalmatter · 04/01/2017 20:45

They make pork scratching why can't they make some sort of chicken skin crisps (not going to call it chicken scratchings as that sounds rank)?

Anyone? Dragons Den? Please?

Toddlerteaplease · 04/01/2017 20:47

YANBU. Crikeyblimey has the right idea. Genius

mommybunny · 04/01/2017 20:49

Whenever I need to sear chicken thighs (for paella, Yotam's chicken and cardamom rice, etc) I snip off the extra skin bits with scissors and crisp them up in the pan for my cook's pre-dinner snack. I have to make sure my DD doesn't see this as she would demand to get in on the action and I just can't have that.

mommybunny · 04/01/2017 20:51

Ecumenical, I do recall reading an article in the New York Times food section about how chefs are putting chicken skin to use as nibbles and salad garnishes - in a paper with a large Jewish circulation they called it "Jewish bacon".

MaxPepsi · 04/01/2017 20:52

Can't abide chicken skin......but love pork crackling Confused

A full chicken, that feeds 4-5 according to the label, gets cooked in our house for 2 people. I don't eat meat off the bone either so DH gets a right feast. The pooch gets any leftovers.....he lIves the skin!
