Hi Ladies

Not strictly AIBU but I don't know what to do Sad

My DD is 5 months and not very well. She's very teary and hot. She has a temp of 38.4C which hasn't gone done after 2 doses of calpol!

What do I do? She's hasn't been sick and there's no obvious illness e.g. Rash, ear pulling etc.

She's in a sleeping bag in bed now with just a long sleeve vest on underneath, no blanket. Is that too much? Too little?

I'm at a loss and feel like crying Sad

I would take her out of the sleeping bag- it's more dangerous for her to be too hot. Have you got a short-sleeved vest? Just a nappy might be best for a while.

Definitely take her out of the sleeping bag and take her vest off.

Feeling a little cold won't harm her but overheating might.

My GP also suggests a cool bath for a fever.

I'd call the NHS 111 line for advice on the temp front. If you've already given her 2 doses of a look then that suggests she has had a temp for a few hours now. As she is very young they may suggest an out of hours visit to the hospital for a check up but give them a call to get advice. They were always good when my DS had a temp and I was worried it was not going down.

Try to get some more fluids into her, an extra feed or bottle and give her a lukewarm bathroom help bring her temperature down then put her in a fresh nappy and a vest.

Strip her down and call 111 for advice, they are fab.
They always advise not to give cool bath as it can raise the body core temperature.

Keeping her hydrated is vital, is she having wet nappies?

How long has she had the temp for? Nappies normal? Personally I'd try ibuprofen next time if temp not gone down. I also think take her out of sleeping bag. Am not at all medical and would always say go with your instincts. Definitely get her checked if that temp doesn't come down with further meds.

Strip to nappy and try not to hold her close (to avoid transfer of your body heat. Phone 111. They are likely to get you to go to out of hours (get baby dressed to go out). Take change of clothes for you and her - from experience these things usually end up with you covered in vomit)

I've taken her sleeping bag off! She's just lying there half asleep, letting out little groans. Will give her an extra bottle!

She was 37.8c last night and gave her some calpol and she slept all night. She's worse today! Room temp is 18C

If you're worried I would not hesitate to go to walk in/ A and E. They would prefer to see a baby than not and something bad happen. Better to be safe than sorry. Listen to your instincts x

Is she drinking? Wet nappies? Try to get some liquid in if she will take it. Loosen clothes, take her out of sleeping bag. Call Nhs,they will advise you best.

Take out of sleeping bag. Vest fine and maybe a small cotton sheet if it's a cold room. It's minus 1 here.

Don't panic it's not hugely high. Fluids as much as poss and if you worried do 111.

Tepid sponging is better than a Luke warm bath.

If she has a temp strip her down to her nappy and call 101 for advice especially is calpol won't bring it down and she's had it for 2 days, also make sure your giving her extra fluids too. No cool bath this is not recommended as it makes the body go warmer on the inside apparently. Hope your DD is better soon just call 101 they will give the best advice as to what to do with her as she is only a baby.

Hmmm over 38 and hasn't come down with calpol. When is the next dose of calpol due?

Now out of sleeping bag, check temp every 15 mins and if it hasn't come down I'd not hesitate to go straight to urgent care/ooh etc.

Neurofen and calpol together is the best thing for bringing down a temperature, I would try this first.

Tepid sponging is not recommended and hasn't been for years as it can cause the body temperature to go even higher so please don't do that.

Her temp is higher than normal but not worringly so, she's obviously fighting something off.

Keep her as cool as possible and keep a close eye on her and her temp. Trust your instincts and call 111 if you think she needs looking at. Hope she's better soon.

As above- try calprofen as well as the calpol. They can be given together or give it in between doses of calpol.
If temp still up call 111.

Call 111 and or make sure a doctor sees her and soon, children that age can deteriorate very easily and if you want to run her up to A&E no medics will chastise you for doing that!
