Hi Ladies

Not strictly AIBU but I don't know what to do Sad

My DD is 5 months and not very well. She's very teary and hot. She has a temp of 38.4C which hasn't gone done after 2 doses of calpol!

What do I do? She's hasn't been sick and there's no obvious illness e.g. Rash, ear pulling etc.

She's in a sleeping bag in bed now with just a long sleeve vest on underneath, no blanket. Is that too much? Too little?

I'm at a loss and feel like crying Sad

Oh gosh thanks for your advice!

Temperature is fine which is one good thing and I can't see her soft spot! I'm waiting for a call back.

I've just checked her nappy and even though it doesn't feel wet there is a little blue line! She must of done a little pee!

Hope she's ok op, if in doubt a&e Flowers

cx5221 · 05/01/2017 01:46

if in doubt a&e

Completely agree with this, children can get poorly quickly so even if she was seen 5 hours ago and told viral and gets worse it is definitely worth getting rechecked.

I've looked after patients who have been fine at 5pm and sent home only to come back up to hospital at 9pm to get admitted this is more common with children too as they tend to get more dehydrated quicker and more exhausted quicker.
Just because they've been seen that day don't ever let it put you off getting checked again if things get worse.

Italiangreyhound · 05/01/2017 02:55

Lou hope you get that call back.

If in doubt, A and E. Are you safe to drive there? Are you on your own?

Good luck.

MiscellaneousAssortment · 05/01/2017 03:32

Hope she's ok and you're monitoring / getting a bit of rest yourself if you can.

Baby illnesses are so worrying as what was right advice in the morning can change by the night (or even just by lunchtime really).

cx5221 · 05/01/2017 08:12

How is she now op?

LouBlue1507 · 05/01/2017 08:50

Hi everyone!

Call back was to see how she is this morning, check her temp and nappies etc.

DD is similar, No temp but rash that was on her tummy yesterday has spread to her face. Very miserable, when awake, still not taking much milk (few sips). She's ok when she's in my arms but just stares at me with the occasional smile.

She must be knackered Sad I know I am!

Lou...seen update. Have you done glass test on rash.

cx5221 · 05/01/2017 09:13

Lou get her to A&E she really doesn't sound well.

LouBlue1507 · 05/01/2017 09:19

The rash fades when pressure is applied. She's asleep now, She feels cool to the touch but not cold.

Hi Lou

Another vote here for taking her to A + E asap. They won't think you are timewasting.

londonrach · 05/01/2017 09:36

Lou...ill take her to a&e shes not well and this needs checking out.

icelollycraving · 05/01/2017 10:43

I think you've been cautious & sensible. I'd continue being sensible & go to a&e. If she's fine, it'll give you peace of mind. She may need treatment & that's the best place.

LouBlue1507 · 05/01/2017 11:06

Going back to the doctors at 12:30. DD did perk up earlier but can't stay awake longer than an hour. Still no joy getting her to have any milk!

I'm dreading going, I started to cry on the phone and the lady was very abrupt and made me feel a bit stupid Sad I think the lack of sleep is getting to me Sad

Try not to dread going. They are there to help. You're having a rough time. It's really really hard caring for a sick baby. And don't worry if you cry when you get there either!! X

blueskyinmarch · 05/01/2017 11:19

It is so her when they are little and ill. Don't let the receptionist put you off. Get your wee one seen to and hopefully she will start to recover soon

ButtMuncher · 05/01/2017 11:24

Genuinely - I'd skip GP and go to A&E - she's clearly not right and the lack of wet nappies and feeding is not ideal - it's been getting worse over a period of time rather than better which you'd expect with calpol and ibuprofen intervention. Sounds as if your little girl could do with a blood test TBH, just to rule out bacterial infection (sepsis etc).

Comtesse · 05/01/2017 11:52

Dont get fobbed off, go to a&e. I have never been made to feel bad when taking in a little child. Your baby is not very well, has been unwell for a while and is not getting better. My take would be - Don't muck about with the GP, go to a&e sooner rather than later.

ParadiseCity · 05/01/2017 12:00

Oh sweetheart you are not stupid Flowers Get your lovely baby down to a&e and it doesn't matter if you cry.

Trust me it's normal to feel clueless and useful but you really are doing a great job. Go and see the a&e folk and I hope your DD is back to herself soon .

ALLthedinosaurs · 05/01/2017 12:01

Oh Lou... does the rash look like 5th disease? (Google if you don't know) or does it look measles-like? Because measles-like rash is common in scarlet fever and theres a lot of it about right now. If it is, she'll need antibiotics so definitely worth getting someone to have a good look at her.

MiniMaxi · 05/01/2017 12:02

Another vote for a&e - they will be very understanding and take good care. Hope she gets well soon.

ALLthedinosaurs · 05/01/2017 12:03

That wasn't clear. Regardless of the rash, someone should take a look at her for potential scarlet fever Flowers

cx5221 · 05/01/2017 12:14

lou at risk of being flamed some Gp's can be hit and miss when it comes to poorly babies especially if you're fitted in on an emergency appointment with a locum.

I was told by one locum GP my dd had a viral infection last week I'm a nurse and really wasn't happy as she'd been poorly for more than 7 days with a fever each day and was getting worse not better. I refused to budge until another GP saw her. I think more to fob me off than anything they referred us to paeds at the hospital and when she was examined / x rayed there she actually had pneumonia. Now I accept this could have been hard for the doctor to find and my daughter got the right treatment in the end so I bear no bad feeling towards the doctor but if I hadn't been pushy she would have been sent home with pneumonia.

I'm not trying to frighten you at all and I'm not saying your dd has anything serious but I honestly think you would be better going to a&e to be seen.

If you're already at the GP when you see this as I've just noticed the time and get fobbed off again just go straight to a&e.

After this many days she should be getting better not worse and also if she is poorly like this the doctor should be able to find an actual cause rather than general viral infection if they can't give you one then she needs to be seen by a paediatrician.

I hope you get the answers you need today and don't feel stupid for being upset you're baby is ill of course you're going to be upset there's no shame in that.

LouBlue1507 · 05/01/2017 13:35

Hi all.

Just got back from GPs, she was lovely and listened to me. DDs temperature was 36C which is brill but she's covered in a viral rash and is clearly an unwell baby - GPs words.

The GP has said to keep trying to get fluids info DD and she'll phone me at 4:30 to see how much DD has has has and if she hasn't turned a corner will refer her straight to hospital Sad
