having 2 couples round for dinner tonight. this was arranged about 3 weeks ago.

just had text message from Mrs W

"hi lists just to let you know I decided to turn vegeterian just before Christmas.. so no meat, fish, gelatine , meat fat etc. Thanks."

AIBU to serve jersey a tin of macaroni cheese while everyone else enjoys starter of smoked salmon followed by roast lamb and all the trimmings?

No, we won't die or explode. But meat is an integral part of the meal for me, almost certainly the nicest part.

arethereanyleftatall · 01/01/2017 12:53

Bertrand - she unfortunately really does exist. She's just not one of those people you'd defy. I wish I could show her your comment!

"But meat is an integral part of the meal for me"

Really?

I am an omnivore, which means I eat meat, vegetarian food and vegan food. I love food whether it contains meat or not. Some meals are naturally meat free. Is it really such a bad thing to have a meat free meal now and again?

YouTheCat · 01/01/2017 12:58

But it wasn't the vegetarianism that was unreasonable. It was the telling the host on the day of the meal, when she'd already planned her menu accordingly and bought the food that was unreasonable.

The OP didn't say she had any problem with catering for a vegetarian at any point. In fact, she went out and bought some food especially for her guest.

I think it would be more unreasonable to tell people they're having lamb and then serving them all a nut roast because one person had suddenly decided to change her eating habits.

I hope the evening went well and that the friend was appreciative of the extra effort.

DartmoorDoughnut · 01/01/2017 13:02

YANBU. Hope she was appreciative of your efforts

PlymouthMaid1 · 01/01/2017 13:20

Cheeky mare. Still serving macaroni cheese with spuds and gravy will teach her a lesson as that is a revolting combo. Tell her to bring something to accompany roast dinner bits and maybe open a tin of soup for her starter or that seventies classic, a glass of orange juice.

YANBU. Hope she was appreciative of your efforts

Be she wasn't. That type never are.

user1480946351 · 01/01/2017 13:30

Because they are adults and you don't make their rules?

No, I don't make their rules, the English language makes their rules. If you eat (or drink)o bits of meat and fish, you are not a vegetarian. There is no rule you can make to change this fact.
*I'm a vegetarian but I eat goose fat potatoes and eat meat gravy"...you are not a vegetarian.
This is not a matter of opinion, it is very basic fact.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 01/01/2017 13:32

She's just not one of those people you'd defy

So genuine question: what would she do if you said the separate barbecue you're supposed to use was broken, and the separate pan were all in use for something else? I suppose she could just refuse to eat and sit sulking, but quite honestly what else can she do?

As so many have said, most folk can respect rational choices, but attention seeking like this surely only gets worse when it's pandered to?

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 01/01/2017 13:39

I wouldn't die if I had a vegetarian meal but I'd probably have a very upset stomach!

I have problems with a lot of food (I wouldn't have been able to eat OP's smoked salmon or lamb for example) but I would have given her plenty of notice and offered to supply something I can eat if she didn't mind putting it in the oven for me.

BertrandRussell · 01/01/2017 13:42

"I wouldn't die if I had a vegetarian meal but I'd probably have a very upset stomach!"
You're allergic to vegetarian food? Really?

ChuckSnowballs · 01/01/2017 13:45

I wouldn't die if I had a vegetarian meal but I'd probably have a very upset stomach!

Really? So you just eat meat with no potatoes, rice, pasta, no veg, no sauces, no nothing? Are you a caveperson? Gosh it must be hard living in such progressive times.

CauliflowerSqueeze · 01/01/2017 13:45

Any change of diet would make your digestive system kick up a bit of a fuss initially I would think. But it would very soon restore itself and it would probably be a healthier diet anyway.

ChuckSnowballs · 01/01/2017 13:47

Tomato plants eat insects?

Yes, and Ants farm greenfly because they want to suck nectar out of their anuses, and will fight off any ladybirds that come to eat the greenfly. It's a jungle out there.

DailyFail1 · 01/01/2017 13:54

I once made a 'beef lasagna' with Quorn for my harcore meat eater friends because I got pissed off by them complaining about veggie food. As a bonus I also made paneer jalapeno bites. Nobody noticed. Everybody asked for seconds and thirds and several people thought the paneer was chicken. People who say they hate veggie food have no imagination. Hmm

arethereanyleftatall · 01/01/2017 14:01

Puzzled - I wouldn't dare, so hypothetically - she'd insist one of the pans was emptied in to another, cleaned out and used. Plus she'd have a face like a smacked arse.

BertrandRussell · 01/01/2017 14:03

"Any change of diet would make your digestive system kick up a bit of a fuss initially I would think"

Really? Eating a meal with no meat would upset a meat eater's digestive system??

YoScienceBitch · 01/01/2017 14:06

Vegetables are a huge chore for me. I wouldn't be happy to eat an entirely veggie meal.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 01/01/2017 14:14

Bloody hell, why did I post?! Of course I can eat some vegetables, but too many upset my stomach. A dinner for me consists of white meat or fish, potatoes and peas or similar. I'm not a cave person (stupid comment), I just can't eat a lot of foods that most people consider normal.

NicknameUsed · 01/01/2017 14:16

"Vegetables are a huge chore for me. I wouldn't be happy to eat an entirely veggie meal."

So you never eat pizza or pasta with tomato sauce or beans on toast, or a fried egg sandwich or any other meals that are meat free but not intentionally vegetarian.

Sorry, but your ignorance on what you think is invloved in coking vegetarian food is astounding.

And vegetables aren't a chore. Buy them ready prepared.

CauliflowerSqueeze · 01/01/2017 14:18

Yes Bertrand. Any change of diet.

You're vegetarian but if we assume you're not allergic to meat and then introduced meat into your diet, your digestive system would be likely to struggle for a short while to adapt.

YoScienceBitch · 01/01/2017 14:20

I'm not ignorant. I just don't like meals without meat. Didn't realise my diet offended you so much.

BertrandRussell · 01/01/2017 14:20

No, I'm not a vegetarian. What made you think I was?

DailyFail1 · 01/01/2017 14:23

The comments on here actually do explain why there's so much obesity in the UK. Being unable to handle a meal without veg is a ridiculous excuse.

CauliflowerSqueeze · 01/01/2017 14:23

Weird - thought I'd read that earlier. Must be mistaken.
