having 2 couples round for dinner tonight. this was arranged about 3 weeks ago.

just had text message from Mrs W

"hi lists just to let you know I decided to turn vegeterian just before Christmas.. so no meat, fish, gelatine , meat fat etc. Thanks."

AIBU to serve jersey a tin of macaroni cheese while everyone else enjoys starter of smoked salmon followed by roast lamb and all the trimmings?

Blondes wine is usually filtered with fish swim bladders if I remember correctly. But something different is used in wines labelled as suitable for vegetarians. Asda coop and m&s are best for labelling veg wines

Another "aren't vegetarians awful" thread.

X post with rhondaSmile

Goingtobeawesome · 31/12/2016 16:28

No one is saying vegetarians are awful. They are saying the OPs friend is awful for her rudeness. Not her vegetarianism.

Grindelwaldswand · 31/12/2016 17:08

Well considering they avoid meat but use animal products that cause even more pain and suffering then yes they are ridiculous Hmm

LockedOutOfMN · 31/12/2016 17:11

Agree with TheThingsWeAdmitOnMN and her idea to text back 'No problem, we are having x starter, xyz veggies & x for dessert, so feel free to bring anything you'd like to have with that. What a shame you didn't let me know sooner I could have changed the menu, but there's no way I'm braving the shops again, it's mad out there!'

AmberLav · 31/12/2016 17:16

My cousin declared as I was serving the spaghetti Bolognese that she'd given up red meat. I'd said two hours earlier that that was what I was making... She got spaghetti with grated cheese on top... She was happy with that...

MargaretCavendish · 31/12/2016 18:14

Well considering they avoid meat but use animal products that cause even more pain and suffering then yes they are ridiculous hmm

I don't know whether to slowly and carefully explain to you that believing that you should do nothing if you can't or won't do everything is an obvious logical fallacy, or whether just to make a fucking stupid Hmm face back at you.

goingtobeawesome, have you read the full thread.

Goingtobeawesome · 31/12/2016 18:26

Yes

ohthelidcameafftheroses · 31/12/2016 18:52

Bit goady grindel?

honeysucklejasmine · 31/12/2016 20:32

Interested to know how this panned out.

You know, place marking. Wink

Whowouldfardelsbear · 31/12/2016 20:39

Bet she ate some lamb

PaulDacresConscience · 31/12/2016 21:20

Nothing wrong with being veggie, but it is rude to drop it on the OP with only hours to go before the dinner party - especially given that the change in eating habits occurred at least a week ago. Why leave it until today to text?

kali110 · 31/12/2016 21:38

Are some people being purposely goady today? Confused

HappyFlappy · 31/12/2016 22:48

kali

i was veggie for 18 years and often wanted to kill for the meat on someone else's plate! It looked and smelled (and I am sure, tasted) delicious. (Raw meat was another matter- I felt physically ill at the smell of it.)

I know vegetarians can eat eggs and cheese - I would only have made the comment as a snide point ( I know plenty of "vegetarians" who eat fish - presumably it is the "tofu of the sea" [grin[)

Congratulations on enjoying "some quoin". I think it's filth in both taste and texture - give me lentils every time!

HappyFlappy · 31/12/2016 22:49

*quorn, not quoin

rolls eyes>

kali110 · 31/12/2016 23:11

happy i honestly don't know any veggies that want to eat meat.Confused the thought disgusts them.
If a person eats fish then they are not vegetarian, they're a pescetarian.
Really bugs me people who say they are veggies yet eat fish ( or chicken Hmm)

jmh740 · 01/01/2017 00:42

Kali110 I've been veggie 29 years I don't eat chicken or fish I went for a meal last week the veggie option on the set menu had sold out they offered me salmon and didn't look very impressed when I said it's not very vegetarian.
I've never been tempted my the meat on others plates.

user1480946351 · 01/01/2017 01:07

However, for all the replacement suggestions my veggie husband doesn't like eggs, goat's cheese, blue cheese, Brie-types, aubergines or mushrooms

Then he should bring his own food to dinner parties.

DailyFail1 · 01/01/2017 02:14

I'm vegetarian and don't give a fuck about how my wine is filtered as it's served generously. I just won't eat meat.

user1480946351 · 01/01/2017 02:48

If you're a vegetarian you don't eat products derived from meat and fish, how come so many "vegetarians" conveniently exclude things that they like, eg wine?

Can I be a vegan that eats cheese then?

DailyFail1 · 01/01/2017 03:06

By that logic User, as everything is grown in shit in a round about way, nothing is truly vegetarian. I personally don't eat meat or fish because I don't want to. I don't check the veg credentials of my wine because I don't want to. I don't have to explain myself further than that.

RhodaBorrocks · 01/01/2017 03:12

Shameless peacemaking. I don't like meat generally. Under duress I will eat some meat but only if I don't have to prepare it. I eat fish but I usually stick to the veggie menu when out. I've lost count of the amount of times I've been told I'm a veggie who eats fish and sometimes chicken. I'm not veggie - I just don't like most meat! I had one boyfriend try and get me all inflamed and go vegan like him but he couldn't accept I just didn't like meat but had no moral objection to anyone eating it or animal produce. Apparently all non meat eaters do it for moral reasons. Hmm

In fact, the biggest clue that I was anaemic recently was that I started craving a big bloody steak. Normally the thought makes my stomach turn. Grin

OP how did it go? She was bloody rude with that text. Hope you rubbed her face in it with the lovely meal you made for everyone else!

PyongyangKipperbang · 01/01/2017 03:35

Rhoda I decided a few years ago that it was easier to say I am vegetarian than to say "I dont really eat meat.....well I do but only certain types and cuts and it depends on my mood. Oh and I am fine with meat gravy and veg cooked in meat fat/juices..."
My family understand but no one else does. I have friends of friends who consider me a veggie who cant commit, or a very fussy meat eater. I am probably both!

If I do manage to eat out (another issue) then I will usually pick the veggie option.
