having 2 couples round for dinner tonight. this was arranged about 3 weeks ago.

just had text message from Mrs W

"hi lists just to let you know I decided to turn vegeterian just before Christmas.. so no meat, fish, gelatine , meat fat etc. Thanks."

AIBU to serve jersey a tin of macaroni cheese while everyone else enjoys starter of smoked salmon followed by roast lamb and all the trimmings?

wow what a little of responses. just come back from local co op with a nutroast and some mini vegeterian quiche.

I'd forgotten the crackers so needed to go out anyway but very irritating at such late notice!

off to get a cup of tea and to read what you've all said now

Rude and completely thoughtless behaviour.

MuseumOfCurry · 31/12/2016 11:43

In this case it is.

Miserylovescompany2 · 31/12/2016 11:46

Serve up some delicious tofu on a slimey mushroom with a slither of tomato for colour!!

Or beans on toast :)

Don't be serving her wine either because the likelihood is it won't be suitable for vegetarians. You can't go wrong with water.

Main course...pot noddle!

Desert...any random bit of fruit!

Bloody cheek!

ShowMePotatoSalad · 31/12/2016 11:49

Reply saying this is what we are having, xxxx would you like to bring something for yourself as I haven't time to go shopping again today

Yeah but if she does that we will then see a new thread posted by WhatsWrongWithBeingAVeggieNow saying that she's going to a NYE dinner tonight and her host won't make her a vegetarian meal...is she being AIBU or what? Grin

ChuckSnowballs · 31/12/2016 11:49

"Be prepared to have to mop up her drool as she watches the rest of you feast on delicious corpses enveloped in luscious gravy."

What?

In the 32 years of being veggie this has never happened to me.

Lorelei76 · 31/12/2016 11:50

Potato, so we will ask how much notice she gave. Easy Grin

DollyPlastic · 31/12/2016 11:51

I think you should have replied 'That's fine, just bring a pack up'

PattyPenguin · 31/12/2016 11:53

YY to warning her about the wine. If you wanted to go to the trouble, you could check the label or look on the Tesco wine by the case website which lets you filter your search by 'vegetarian'. If there's no wine suitable for vegetarians in the house, I wouldn't be going out again to buy any at this short notice. And if you don't know whether what you've already got is suitable, best for her not to drink it, just in case, eh?

ChuckSnowballs · 31/12/2016 11:54

Ha ha - so funny. What about just mud. A mud pie. and some poo. And throw some dried leaves in for garnish ha ha how funny that would be.

Or we could be adults about it. Seems there are more people on here ruder than the OP's friend about vegetarians.

The issue is the rudeness, not the vegetarianism.

mypropertea · 31/12/2016 11:54

I wouldn't have opened it till the shops were shut, what with all the stuff to do getting ready... but I am a cow.

Oddbins · 31/12/2016 11:54

do egg mayo for a stater literally hard boiled egg with mayo

For main do exactly as you planned and do a pasta in tomato sauce for her

basic stuff you probably have in

prepare the rest as you normally would

If she reaches for Gravy or goose fat toasties then say "sorry they are not vegetarian as I didn't have enough notice"

if she eats them anyway then you can rightly be annoyed

SoupDragon · 31/12/2016 11:57

Yeah, because serving up stuff that isn't food is just the same isn't it? Besides, the poo might not be vegetarian if it came from meat eater.

SoupDragon · 31/12/2016 11:58

No, people are being "rude" about the rude friend.

The issue is the rudeness, not the vegetarianism.

And that is what people are addressing, not vegetarians in general.

SoupDragon · 31/12/2016 11:59

And for those who CBA to RTFT, the OP has been put and bought something!

CauliflowerSqueeze · 31/12/2016 12:04

She's bought the veggie food.

Hope it goes well OP. She was really thoughtless telling you on the day

Miserylovescompany2 · 31/12/2016 12:05

I'm actually a vegetarian ChuckSnowBalls my post was lighthearted. If you wish to twist it into something than that's your prerogative. :)

Flightywoman · 31/12/2016 12:07

YANBU!

However, for all the replacement suggestions my veggie husband doesn't like eggs, goat's cheese, blue cheese, Brie-types, aubergines or mushrooms.

So y'know they aren't failsafes!

Quorn sausages it is then...

Bluntness100 · 31/12/2016 12:09

It was rude because she knows it's last minute, she can assume the op will have to shop specially and she could have said sorry for the last min notice would you like me to bring something,

Instead she fired out a list of demand like she was going to a restaurant, even so far as to mention animal fats in case the op was a bit thick and didn't know.

As she's only been veggie for less than a week, it wouldn't have killed her to either be polite and eat what she was given or offer to bring something. A week ago she was eating meat quite happily it seems.

However I'm glad the op is the bigger person and will cater to her quietly, as she's either a total bitch or she's so self absorbed and selfish she doesn't give a shit how much trouble she puts people to.

liletsthepink · 31/12/2016 12:17

I know this isn't the point of this thread, but I don't particularly like lamb although I'd eat it if it was served to me as a guest. I'd be delighted to have pasta in tomato sauce or beans on toast as an alternative on offer!

BeyondIBringYouGoodTidings · 31/12/2016 12:22

Definitely beans on toast, or a cheese and tomato pizza.
Don't go to any effort at all. Cheeky sod!!

I hope your lamb smells lovely and she gets food envy, that'll show her!! Envy

toptoe · 31/12/2016 12:24

I'd say this has very little to do with vegetarianism and very much to do with attention seeking, controlly behaviour. Because she knows that her late info will mean an extra trip to the shops and last minute panic that is all about her. It's the food equivalent of turning up very late and making everyone wait for you.

Mynestisfullofempty · 31/12/2016 12:25

Re all the mentions of cheese. Don't forget it would have to be vegetarian cheese i.e not made with animal rennet.
Personally I think it's outrageous that she's only just told you. Unacceptable and incredibly rude.

FuckYouDailyFail · 31/12/2016 12:29

Flightywoman your DH pretty much hates the ingredients for the only vegetarian recipes I know Grin

neverwronged · 31/12/2016 12:37

I think you've done the right thing lists.
It's awfully rude to only let you know today but for the sake of harmony I'd have done the same.
But you have permission to throttle her if she sees the lamb and wants to eat it.
