My DH has just come back from the shops with 14 sprouts

He was shopping for New Year's Day dinner while I did the housework. There will be 7 of us for dinner, all adults. We are having steak with pepper sauce and steak pie. He bought four sachets of pepper sauce and 14 sprouts. When I asked why he only bought 14 sprouts his answer was "who eats more than 2 sprouts?" If you were going somewhere for dinner would you not expect to at least have the option of having half a dozen?

I tend to serve sprouts in odd numbers, if there are many vegetables you'd be getting three or five but if only sprouts and one other veg then it would be seven so your husband is really only catering for 2 people!!

I'd want more than 14 for myself, never mind anyone else. Sprouts are delicious!

bumblebee50 · 30/12/2016 15:12

We are having either steak pie or steak with pepper sauce. The sprouts will go with the steak pie - nothing wrong with that surely?

I wouldn't eat sprouts with either tbh, and i'm not usually adverse to an odd combination! We had steak yesterday and had cabbage, garlic mushrooms and green beans with it.

Sprouts seems very much a with-gravy food to me.

MrsPeelyWally · 30/12/2016 15:17

There's loads of gravy in a steak pie.

BoyFromTheBigBadCity · 30/12/2016 15:18

Roast sprouts are amazing - all for me please!

RJnomore1 · 30/12/2016 15:19

Steak pie has gravy in it.

HeadElf · 30/12/2016 15:21

I eat 5-6 much to DHs dismay!

RedToothBrush · 30/12/2016 15:59

You are daft. 14 sprouts is enough for 7.

Chop into quarters, stick in some bacon. Roast. No one will ever even know how many you have.

You will have plenty of other food. No one is going to starve because you didn't have more spouts.

HappyFlappy · 30/12/2016 16:01

All of this sprout talk is making me very, very hungry.

I would eat sprouts with almost any savoury dish (but not fish pie).

ExitPursuedBySantaSpartacus · 30/12/2016 16:03

Yay - a bit of Talc art.

I love sprouts.

What was I listening to or reading the other day when someone was counting out the number of sprouts for each guest?

ConkerTriumphant · 30/12/2016 16:04

Talk to me about roasting sprouts!!

MrsPeelyWally · 30/12/2016 16:08

I love sprouts.

Simmer sprouts till they are half cooked. Add some butter and crushed garlic to a frying pan and sauté for a few moments, add the sprouts and sauté everything a wee bit more, add pine nuts and shake them about in the pan till heated through.

YoHoHoandabottleofTequila · 30/12/2016 16:08

I don't like sprouts or steak. I'd be gutted. Grin

LockedOutOfMN · 30/12/2016 16:38

I love sprouts and eat 9-12 at our family Christmas lunch and Boxing Day lunch (leftover turkey, etc. - veg. cooked fresh).

If I were invited somewhere for a meal with sprouts, I'd be sad with fewer than 3. 5 or 6 sounds perfect (and I'd try to eat others' leftovers too Blush ).

If the OP's husband thought no one likes sprouts, or many sprouts, he should've bought another, more popular vegetable instead or as well so there is sufficient food for the dinner.

Gramgram · 30/12/2016 16:38

Yuck to sprouts. Best way to deal with them is to slice then up, drizzle with olive oil and bung them in the bin. Then drink wine.

Your DH is obviously thinking that not everyone will be eating the sprouts, serve some other vegetables so people have s choice.

HeadElf · 30/12/2016 16:45

Gramgram your recipe made me nearly wee myself laughing Grin

ForalltheSaints · 30/12/2016 16:55

This is 14 more than we will have post March 2019 when we have left Brussels and the EU.

bumblebee50 · 30/12/2016 18:44

You know, I didn't even ask him to buy sprouts - he did that all by himself and then gets arsey when I tell him 14 is ridiculous for 7 people. He cooks the dinner so I suppose it's up to him.

kateandme · 30/12/2016 18:44

y dad would have the 14 and then need leftover so he could have the same tomorrow.id say at least half a dozen on the plate.who has only two!

HappyFlappy · 30/12/2016 19:01

PeelyWally

That sounds as orgasmic as a brassica can possibly get . . .

dowhatnow · 30/12/2016 19:07

Sprouts are lovely. Peeling the little fuckers is not lovely. Perhaps 14 is his maximum peeling number, in his time allocated to veg prep.

scaryclown · 30/12/2016 19:08

Grin Awesome!

Wickedstepmum67 · 30/12/2016 19:32

My DH has just suggested giving the said sprouts a 70s twist and serving them on individual cocktail sticks. 😄 I do love my sprouts and would be well cross to be rationed to two though!

AlpacaPicnic · 30/12/2016 20:58

I bought a bag of sprouts for 20p.
I had 6-8 for Christmas. DH had one. I fry mine with bacon.

I used the rest of them up in a sprout gratin... peeled and halved them, roasted until caramelised, mixed into cheese sauce, topped with cheese and cooked until bubbly - then ate the lot myself.
