My DH has just come back from the shops with 14 sprouts

He was shopping for New Year's Day dinner while I did the housework. There will be 7 of us for dinner, all adults. We are having steak with pepper sauce and steak pie. He bought four sachets of pepper sauce and 14 sprouts. When I asked why he only bought 14 sprouts his answer was "who eats more than 2 sprouts?" If you were going somewhere for dinner would you not expect to at least have the option of having half a dozen?

See I like steak pie but not a fan of steak. So I would opt for the steak pie. I like sprouts when they are the little weeny baby ones. Big gnarly fuckers are not nice.

I don't eat meat, but I can't see why you wouldn't have Brussels sprouts with steak? Sounds fine to me.

I'd be trying very hard not to laugh if there were 2 lonely Brussels sprouts rolling around on my plate 😬

I dont think carrots and green beans go with steak. It really is all down to personal choice.

Steak Pie we have for our New Years dinner. One with kidney, one with mushrooms, one with both so everyone can have what they like. I also do a fish pie with smoked haddock, white fish, prawns, and boiled eggs. Again so people can have choice if they dont want the steak pie. Maybe the OP is doing the same - giving people a choice.

Get some other veg, like cabbage or mash, gently 'top' the other veg with the sprouts and serve.

If I was a guest, I would definitely say "No sprouts for me please".

You never know, 14 sprouts might be too many....

I don't see what's weird about sprouts with steak, they're just another green veg aren't they? Although l, being vegetarian I don't have a bloody clue what is deemed to go well with steak.

As I am a vegetarian please can I have all the sprouts?

I bought sprouts for Christmas only because they were 19p a bag in Lidl.

Only DD2 really likes them. She wanted 6. DD1 and I had one each for tradition and DH decided to have 2.

On our Christmas chore chart (divided the jobs between us) DD2 had the task "peel 10 sprouts". It turned out to be too many

FWIW I'd have broccoli or savoy cabbage with steak rather than sprouts

I only ever eat 2 sprouts! I hate them. I eat the first one as a token to xmas and I eat the second one as a token to being healthy. I never eat more than 2 because they are vile. DH on the other hand could easily eat 14 himself

Mrspeelywally. I pretty much choose the veg based on the ones DD will eat so carrots and green beans it is! I would love the old fashioned grilled mushroom, grilled tomato and onion rings but they would not be enjoyed by DH or DD. DH would choose asparagus but I don't like it and as I buy and cook the food he doesn't often get it!
