To want to take down my christmas tree

DonaldStott · 27/12/2016 09:41

I have been jolly. Had a lovely few festive days. But we are going away in a couple of days for New Year and only home the evening before we are back to school/work.

I want to take it down today, but husband thinks I am being a bit of a misbag.

I am in the school of bday cards up only on the day of your bday, then into the recycling, so I do like these things to be short lived, but I want my living room back now the day is over. Aibu?

Tessabelle74 · 28/12/2016 13:24

Mine is coming down today away we're away new year weekend too. Totally nbu

belgina · 28/12/2016 13:28

Where I am from present giving happens at midnight on NYE and NYD. The Christmas tree is part of that. We don't have that big run up though. January is the office party season. So Christmas carries on into Jan. Taking the tree down so early seems so sad to me.
Taking decs down doesn't take all that long ime either. The thought of doing it doesn't stress me out, but their disappearance and reminder of life getting back to normal does!

OnlyTheWelshCanCwtch · 28/12/2016 13:29

Mines already down, and all boxed up, just waiting for hubby to put them back up loft
I'm actually late taking them down, they usually gone Boxing Day!

SemiNormal · 28/12/2016 13:35

Mine came down this morning. Glad to get the house looking somewhat back to normality!

SquidgeyMidgey · 28/12/2016 13:36

YANBU I quite often get the 'Sick of Being Surrounded by People I Don't Normally Have in My Home' Rage on Boxing Day and feel like stripping the place of anything festive. By the 27th I've calmed down and like it all again.

RufusTheSpartacusReindeer · 28/12/2016 13:43

Just packed up the kitchen stuff

The playroom was done yesterday

Will probably start the conservatory tomorrow

kitnkaboodle · 28/12/2016 13:43

Why do people prefer 'normal' to holidays, relaxing and a pretty house? Confused I'm starting to think that some people just never get any down time.

spacewitch99 · 28/12/2016 13:48

Mine is down. Took it down today.
I used to put it up 12 days before and take it down 12 days after until my dear dad died suddenly at New Year a few years ago. I was so grief stricken I could do nothing- that included taking down my tree. So, since then I take it down a few days after Christmas Day. Having it up around at New Year is just another reminder of that extremeły sad time.

HomeIsWhereTheGinisNow · 28/12/2016 13:48

Yanbu, we're away for new year and so the tree comes down tomorrow.

SquidgeyMidgey · 28/12/2016 13:51

kitnkaboodle, downtime would be nice. Christmas here is days of feeding whinging and Entitled relatives we don't normally have to put up with entertain. All planned and sorted by me because DH finished work at silly o'clock on Christmas Eve. Oh and 2 normally lovely children who are in A Phase of arguing about everything, absobloodylutely everything. Most years are like this. I actually quite hate the Christmas holiday and could do without it quite happily. I've been looking online at going abroad next year to get away from it all...

Mol1628 · 28/12/2016 13:56

Mine is coming down tomorrow. Need the space back and want the house sorted before back to normal routine.

Adnerb95 · 28/12/2016 13:56

I'm with you kit don't understand the HUGE build up and then taking it all down so quickly. T'other way round people!

DM used to put up the tree Christmas Eve - made it magical for us as kids.

OTOH if you re going away as OP is, it can be a bit depressing/unnecessary work to come back to just before term starts.

I am planning to take mine down in the next few days. Its just getting in the way!

Lkiirby91 · 28/12/2016 14:09

All my decorations got taken down yesterday and put in the loft this morning. I love Christmas but need the space more.

Mine didn't go up till the 12th and down the 27th more than long enough.

Thissideof40 · 28/12/2016 14:10

We normally keep ours up until New Year's Day but we bought a real tree this year and it's starting to look pathetic now as all of the branches have started to drop. It's green bin day on Friday too so I'd rather just put it out and be done with it. OH thinks I'm being a Scrooge though. The house generally looks like a bomb has exploded and it wouldn't be so bad if the fam actually lifted a finger to help tidy up a bit. So yeh I'm all for taking the lot down now and giving the house a good tidy up.

Thumbcat · 28/12/2016 14:16

Ours goes down around the 3rd/4th Jan (put up mid December). I don't understand how people have had enough of Christmas already...it only really kicks off on Christmas Eve. It's still Christmas! I also don't understand the tree up in November people.

JustCallMeKate · 28/12/2016 14:17

Ours will come down on 2nd January after Hogmanay. They're still looking lovely and have been up since 3rd December with little needle drop. It's still Christmas here as far as we're concerned.

wtffgs · 28/12/2016 14:27

Your house - fine YANBU.

Personally, I'm not a fan of the Xmas-is-over-on-Boxing-Day thing. Mind you, lots of people I know put their trees up in November so they probably do look a bit tired now. Ours went up on 10 December (early for us but early December was a bit of a desperate time with a very sick relative. I put the tree up to cheer up my kids) I'll leave it up till 6 January (Catholic upbringing)

PlumsGalore · 28/12/2016 14:32

YANBU, mine comes down on the 27th every year. Bloody sick of it by then, it's been up since the 1st December and it was dead.

Who cares.

I8toys · 28/12/2016 14:40

Ours came down this morning. Clutter tidied away - heaven.

TrippyMcTrapFace · 28/12/2016 14:46

Awaiting 50Bales goat pic. I have goat envy.

Haven't taken mine down. Soon though.

SilentBatperson · 28/12/2016 15:02

I don't and have never worked between Christmas and New year, and nor do most of my family. We're close knit and do a lot of get togethers and we also all keep trees up until the 12th because Christmas hasn't finished until then (and it hasn't, that's not a matter of opinion, it's simply a question of whether you choose to celebrate). But there are a few family members who do have to work over the period and actually this approach benefits them. My aunt had to work the 24th-26th, then has 27th-29th off. When she Christmasses it the fuck up. With people increasingly working different shifts now etc, the longer Christmas can give everyone chance.

But do what you want OP. Its your house, put what you like in it when you like. If there's a dispute, casting vote to the person with primary responsibility for taking it down and clearing up.

lilyb84 · 28/12/2016 15:33

I know people who don't have a tree or decs because they're out at work so much, then away seeing family, they don't see the point in having them at home. What would some of you make of that?
