To want to take down my christmas tree

DonaldStott · 27/12/2016 09:41

I have been jolly. Had a lovely few festive days. But we are going away in a couple of days for New Year and only home the evening before we are back to school/work.

I want to take it down today, but husband thinks I am being a bit of a misbag.

I am in the school of bday cards up only on the day of your bday, then into the recycling, so I do like these things to be short lived, but I want my living room back now the day is over. Aibu?

Yabu. And miserable.

Christmas is 25th December to 6th January.

And everything that Zefstar said!

Mosschopz · 27/12/2016 19:12

Zefstar speaks the truth

kimlo · 27/12/2016 19:23

mine came down today. I hate it, and wouldn't have one at all if it was just me, its just messy. The decorations went up on the saturday before christmas, I don't put them up too early.

Most other people I know take them down around now too.

Batteriesallgone · 27/12/2016 19:50

I find it really bizarre that people get so mad at other people doing Christmas their own way Confused

EVERYBODY does Christmas differently. Whether it's presents, the tree, church, alcohol, beef/turkey/goose etc etc et bloody cetera.

Why aren't we celebrating and loving the diversity of everyone having their own ways? Why all the anger. It's sad really.

FarAwayHills · 27/12/2016 19:56

People putting a Christmas tree up in Nov, mince pies and selection boxes in the shops alongside pumpkins at Halloween and Easter eggs in the shops by New Years. It's all such a rush and over before we get time to enjoy it. Each to their own but I'm enjoying Christmas while it's still actually Christmas holidays as I wasn't ready to celebrate it in October Grin

bibbitybobbityyhat · 27/12/2016 19:59

Well, if I fancy "doing Christmas" my own way, I might choose to do it in the middle of summer. On the 14th of June. And instead of riding on a donkey, Mary might ride on a motorbike. And instead of 3 wise men there could be 4 software engineers. And it would be fish and salad for dinner and everyone would give each other an apple for a present.

ninenicknames · 27/12/2016 20:06

Mine down and away for another 11 months💪🏼

Rollonbedtime7pm · 27/12/2016 20:22

I take mine down on NYE - seems ridiculous to have a Christmas tree up in January!

I do think the lounge looks a bit boring after (I love all the lights and sparkly bits!) but i'm glad to have all the stuff back in its usual place and not be so cluttered.

IdaDown · 27/12/2016 21:58

I like to leave mine up till after New Year. Then slowly take them down, bit by bit. But then I don't put the decorations up till the week before.

I leave out the candles and some fairy lights in glass vases over January/February because it's dark and dreary.

I was in The White Company on the 23rd. They'd taken down their tree and window/shop decorations and were putting up all the plain white and red sale signs. That was depressing - it looked like they were closing down. Not cheery/Christmass'ey at all.

Ontopofthesunset · 27/12/2016 22:05

But why is it odd to have a tree up in January? Christmas is a season, not just a day, in which, traditionally, the birth of Christ is celebrated. The season starts in Advent, celebrates the birth of Christ on Christmas Day and continues until Epiphany - 6th January. Epiphany is traditionally when the Three Kings or Magi arrived, hence We Three Kings is an after-Christmas carol. Christmas Day isn't the end of Christmas - it's the beginning; it welcomes 12 days of celebration. The song The Twelve Days of Christmas is about those 12 days.

I'm not a Christian at all but the idea that you take the tree down as soon as the present frenzy is over is just a bit sad.

CaraAspen · 27/12/2016 22:09

Most people just do not have a clue.

KatherinaMinola · 27/12/2016 22:20

If it gets too dry our goats won't eat it

That is a very reasonable reason for taking your tree down now, 50bales Grin

Bananabread123 · 27/12/2016 22:36

I took mine down on xmas day after lunch.

Me too... I always make sure we have lunch super early so I can strip the house of everything Christmassy by 1pm at the latest, so I can get ready for next day's sales! TV adverts have moved on from Christmas for a good day by that point - so should we!

Feeling smug as I got my last Easter egg bought for the kids today, so that's sorted for another year... Love this time of year - bunnies and daffs.... will be ready for sorting Barbecue etc. though by Feb in time for those summertime ads!

lilyb84 · 27/12/2016 22:40

As a child I loved having the tree up for the whole 12 days of Christmas. We put it up in mid December and of course I was on holiday from school for the whole Christmas season so it made the whole thing more exciting.

As an adult, I much prefer the build up to Christmas so get the tree up in early December but like to take it down before NY so I can do a proper clean of the lounge before the new year starts, and because coming home from work every day to see the tree still up feels a bit depressing in itself Grin

SomewhatIdiosyncratic · 27/12/2016 22:49

Mine goes up part way through December and down around 6th January. I don't do anything Christmasy until advent. Actually, that's not quite true, as I've reluctantly had to concede that buying some things like decorations in November is a necessary evil if you want any choice, as stock levels look decimated by mid December.

I hate the modern pattern of seasons being out of sync. If my winter boots wear out in February, I want to replace them to continue to wear boots through the rest of the winter. It may well be 3 months before it's appropriate to wear blooming sandals.

When I'm buying a birthday card in August, I shouldn't have to shun displays of snowy Christmas cards. I want to be buying holiday clothes then, not wooly jumpers. Why back to school weeks before they even break up when they may have a growth spurt in the months between.

I just don't get the rush to launch into Christmas early and make yourself sick of it by the moment it actually occurs (The people who take their decorations down early on my FB feed are the ones who rushed to put it all up ASAP)

Much better to live in the appropriate season and enjoy the moment.

RebelRogue · 27/12/2016 22:50

YANBU. Took mine down(and all the decs) today. It feels amazing! So much space and things are tidy and normal again.

RufusTheSpartacusReindeer · 27/12/2016 22:53

Ds1 birthday is the 3rd of january

We have taken it down on the 2nd since he was born

SingingGoldfinch · 27/12/2016 23:18

Each to their own and all that, but it's still Christmas in my book. Our decs go up the weekend after the kids break up from school. It's late compared to lots of people but we really enjoy the anticipation of putting them up and they are still a real novelty when Christmas Day arrives. We will enjoy them until the new year and will take them down just before the kids go back to school. I think going away is a reasonable reason for taking them down but it makes me a bit sad that people are so keen to bring the festivities to such an abrupt end. Christmas starts on Christmas Eve and lasts until twelfth night. It doesn't start at the end of November! I'm with the old fashioned lot on this one!!

llangennith · 27/12/2016 23:24

I bought a 'pencil Christmas tree' this year. 6ft tall and about 1ft across. So not taking up much room at all.
And it'll be up till 12th night as I'm not a miserable git.

notagiraffe · 27/12/2016 23:26

YANBU. Trees are fantastic in the run up to Christmas. they put you in the mood. As soon as it's over, I always want to spring clean the house and declutter all the red and gold tat. But DH insists on keeping it all up until 12th night. I hate having it up over new year.

TrippyMcTrapFace · 27/12/2016 23:30

Best response on the whole thread 50Bales Xmas Grin

I'm fucked off so I'll probably take it all down tomorrow and wallow in self pity.

SherlockPotter · 27/12/2016 23:30

Do it! It's no longer Christmas, there's no need for it to be up any longer.

SecretWitch · 27/12/2016 23:33

Everything down and put away. Christmas 2016 is done and dusted in our home. My lovely friend keeps her tree up until mid Feb and puts Valentine decs on.

dontbesillyhenry · 27/12/2016 23:35

Bananabread I don't know where to start with your post.
I only know of one person who takes their tree down on Boxing Day- and they are the most miserable bugger going

haveacupoftea · 27/12/2016 23:37

I saw someone on another board describing keeping your tree up as watching porn once you've finished wanking Blush
