To want to take down my christmas tree

I have been jolly. Had a lovely few festive days. But we are going away in a couple of days for New Year and only home the evening before we are back to school/work.

I want to take it down today, but husband thinks I am being a bit of a misbag.

I am in the school of bday cards up only on the day of your bday, then into the recycling, so I do like these things to be short lived, but I want my living room back now the day is over. Aibu?

Do what you like! Ours only went up on Christmas Eve though so will stay in until after new year (possibly not 12th night as I am working that day).

Notagainmun · 27/12/2016 13:08

My tree and decs go up around the 10th Dec and come down on 2nd of Jan. New year's day is part of the Christmas period to me.

icanteven · 27/12/2016 13:16

Mine is coming down tomorrow. I'd take it down now if I didn't have a hangover.

Ontopofthesunset · 27/12/2016 13:19

I am really beginning to feel old on here. Everyone seems to be desperate to move the start of Christmas earlier and earlier and throw in lots of new traditions (elves and whatnot) but what about all the old traditions? It was always traditional to get a Christmas tree only a week or so before Christmas and then to leave the decorations up until Twelfth Night. The tree only got the bulk of the presents under it on Christmas Eve except for the few that had been delivered earlier by friends or relatives. So no one is fed up with the tree or the decorations by Boxing Day because it has only been there for about a week.

Ours will stay up till Twelfth Night as always.

Morning of Jan 6th here. The 6th is a publiuc holiday here so we will be out at lunch but on the return everything will come down ..Then I have to clean again !!!

Lweji · 27/12/2016 13:22

Christmas seems to start in August these days.

Birdsgottafly · 27/12/2016 13:26

Normally mine stays up.

This year I put it up on Christmas Eve and took it down today.

We ( me and my Adult children), say last night, having a drink and reflecting.

We've all got a busy January, medical appointments and house moves, so it was nice to tidy and clean.

hanban89 · 27/12/2016 13:27

Mine is coming down tomorrow so I can move my furniture back round for hosting new year, but I will be leaving my xmas cards and also my laser lights up until new year.

YANBU I often feel once xmas day is over just get the tree away!

Maybe I'm just a bit of a Scrooge!

Sallystyle · 27/12/2016 13:29

Xmas is over.

It's over today and now it's just like any other normal day. I will take mine down tomorrow I imagine.

Ontopofthesunset you just read my mind - I find it depressing as well. The "new" traditions seem really twee and the big long build-up actually sickens me! I have only recently succumbed to removing the tree after New Year - it was always little Christmas January 6th.

Sallystyle · 27/12/2016 13:34

I have never wanted to leave my tree up to new year. Even if it goes up a few days before Xmas I want it down a day or two after Boxing Day.

Some people might still be doing Xmas things but in this house it's over. I am still off work but apart from the children playing with new toys it's like any other day. Family are all back at work now.

BravoPanda · 27/12/2016 13:57

Half of you are bloody weird. Christmas doesn't end until the new year, it's not 2 days. Why bother putting it up in the first place?

Lweji · 27/12/2016 14:00

Christmas doesn't end until the new year

You're mistaken, it's at least until the 6th of January. :)

PurpleDaisies · 27/12/2016 14:03

It's nice to have the room decorated for actual Christmas-mine goes up up to a week before depending on how the days fall and stays up a couple of days after. It's usually up for about a week. It doesn't matter to me how long it's up for.

irregularegular · 27/12/2016 14:22

Ah - reassuring to see a few more people who think like me coming out now.

scrabble1 · 27/12/2016 14:26

Took our xmaa tree down this morning. This is something I do every year. Good to get the space back and some normality

SonyaGluck · 27/12/2016 14:45

I am really beginning to feel old on here. Me too. Xmas Sad My tree goes up on Christmas Eve and comes down on Twelfth Night.

And I did feel very Hmm when DS2's girlfriend came in this morning with an Easter egg that she'd just bought in our local Co op. I'm obviously totally out of step.

JeepersMcoy · 27/12/2016 14:50

Sonya that is what we did when I was a child and I did up until this year. This year it just seemed like putting up the tree was a good activity when dd started school holidays and today it was just annoying me to the extent that I can't face having it up for another week.

I still feel that up on Christmas Eve and down on twelth night is the proper thing to do and I a little bit rebellious for being different this year Grin

crazycatzz · 27/12/2016 14:51

It's still Christmas though! Xmas Shock

Fluffy24 · 27/12/2016 14:57

I'm not one for either guests or decorations overstaying so if you're mentally 'over' Christmas now then YANBU. I'm happy for mine to stay a few more days as it only went up on Friday!

SonyaGluck · 27/12/2016 15:00

that is what we did when I was a child and I did up until this year. Yeah, that's how my mum did it and, thinking about it, we used to think she was the meanest mum in the universe because everyone else we knew put their decorations up much earlier.

And I've got the idea from somewhere or other that it's unlucky to bring greenery into the house before Christmas Eve. Which is a bit daft as I'm not normally at all superstitious. Xmas Confused

FloofyDoof · 27/12/2016 15:03

Ours is coming down tomorrow, our flat is tiny and it's in the way.

littlemissneela · 27/12/2016 17:12

Birthday cards only up on the day of your birthday and then recycled!? Ours stay up for two weeks!

My tree will be staying up until twelth night. If it were only you in the house, then fine, but if there are other family members who want it to stay up for longer, then I would leave it up. Maybe say they need to take it down?

gillybeanz · 27/12/2016 17:20

If I was going away then the tree would be down tbh.
We have ours up a week before and come down new Years day.
i can't be doing with them up weeks before, it spoils the build up as it's already there iyswim.

RufusTheSpartacusReindeer · 27/12/2016 17:21

Ds2 has his birthday in may...they stay up to dds birthday in december...which stay up til ds1 birthday in january...which stay up til ds2 birthday in may...and repeat

I am very lazy
