To want to take down my christmas tree

DonaldStott · 27/12/2016 09:41

I have been jolly. Had a lovely few festive days. But we are going away in a couple of days for New Year and only home the evening before we are back to school/work.

I want to take it down today, but husband thinks I am being a bit of a misbag.

I am in the school of bday cards up only on the day of your bday, then into the recycling, so I do like these things to be short lived, but I want my living room back now the day is over. Aibu?

"We always take ours down Christmas Eve." Er...did you mean to say New Year's Eve Deblet? Christmas Eve seems very premature!

We normally take ours down on NY Day.

shartsi · 27/12/2016 10:39

I took mine down on xmas day after lunch. Couldn't bear to look at it anymore. I only put it up on the 21st.

Lweji · 27/12/2016 10:41

I don't have such problems. Grin
DS didn't want one and I couldn't be arsed. We spent Christmas somewhere else too.

HerBluebiro · 27/12/2016 10:45

I'm at work from tomorrow for a 10 day stretch. Sure, I could leave it all up. But then I'd have to take it down after work.

I'm just feeling a bit poorly/over indulged so struggling to muster the energy

ChuckSnowballs · 27/12/2016 10:46

Mine is 18 inches tall, slots together and has holes in the wood to hang little dangly things that came with it.

It will probably come down today to make way for more firewood.

It is your house, if your husband wants to take it down when he gets back then let him.

Tree was down Boxing Day. We have 4 birthdays coming up in the next few weeks.
Need to breathe and have a bit of normality before the birthday month begins!

TealGiraffe · 27/12/2016 10:53

Yanbu. Mines coming down this afternoon.
For me it is about the run up and then the day itself. Xmas finished last night for me.

Today = tree and decs down, xmas bedding off, presents all away, giving the flat a good clean and getting back to my usual calm clean surroundings.
Now it's more about enjoying the next week until i go back to work on the 3rd. I've got plans to see friends / family, nights out, etc. Don't need a tree up for that Grin

:) I meant New Years Eve even I am not that mean

80sMum · 27/12/2016 10:58

Each to his own, I say.

I didn't put my decorations up until 23rd December and will keep them until 1st January, as we have visitors for New Year's Eve and I want the house to still be looking sparkly and Christmassy for that.

I remember when we were in the USA in the '80s, almost everyone got rid of their Christmas trees on 26th December. Most people went back to work on the 26th as well. There was no such thing as Boxing Day and definitely no "Christmas period" when every office shuts down for a week between Christmas and New Year! I wonder if it's still like that now or whether it's become more like the UK.

irregularegular · 27/12/2016 10:58

Noooo - Christmas has just started! With Christmas Day and Boxing Day, now is the time to put my feet up, read my book, drink something festive - and admire my tree. Plus we've still got visitors coming at various points in the next week to enjoy it. It'll come down about the time the children go back to school.

useristired · 27/12/2016 10:58

Mines coming down today. Children are off with their dad and I've got chemotherapy Thursday so the thought of it being Christmassy here while I'm struggling through hell is too depressing.

Ciutadella · 27/12/2016 10:59

I love this annual thread, and tbh had wondered why there wasn't one on boxing day. I am a 12th nighter but each to her own.

Is christmas eve currently our highest bid, or did that mean the evening of christmas day?
Now, on to the important question, which also comes out annually - why do we all think Twelfth Night is jan 6th when the 12th night is actually 5th? (Something to do with days starting at nighttime, but that is wholly consistent with birth of jesus being just after midnight on 25th - which must be true or why would we have midnight mass?!)

Whattocallbabyboy · 27/12/2016 10:59

Well i birthed my baby at home with the twinkle of the Christmas tree lights a couple of days ago so they feel special.

However with all the new baby csrds, visitors and children's xmas stuff im itching to have a clean up.

kitnkaboodle · 27/12/2016 11:00

People who strip the house on boxing day: do others you know do this or is it just you?? I just ask because this seems to be a MN thing, and I've never known anyone IRL do it.

periwinklepickspoppies · 27/12/2016 11:15

We put ours up as soon as the children finish school and keep it until the weekend before they go back to school. If I had no children then I wouldn't have a tree at all.

Olddear · 27/12/2016 11:24

I put up a twig type tree and hung some baubles on it, it was lovely and much less bother! But all the Christmas ornaments are down today! Christmas table cloth in the wash, all cards except family ones are in the recycling....normal service resumed here!

Nquartz · 27/12/2016 11:26

I think ours will come down this evening, I'm fed up of it taking up space & we need to find homes for the new toys. If we were home yesterday it would have come down last night

Mirandawest · 27/12/2016 11:32

I prefer the non-normality of having the tree up and nice lights on. Ours went up first weekend in December and will go down on January 6th.

irregularegular · 27/12/2016 11:33

Those of you taking all the Xmas stuff down now, are you back at work tomorrow? If so it makes sense. If not then I think you are all a bit weird (in the nicest possible way..). You are skipping the one of the best bits of Xmas - the relaxing part when all the work has been done and everyone has gone home!

PurpleDaisies · 27/12/2016 11:35

irregular I find if more relaxing to know the decorations are all in the attic and that's a job that doesn't need doing later.

wifeyhun · 27/12/2016 11:39

No my tree is staying up till after new year. It's still Christmas and it's lovely looking at the lights twinkling.

AchingBack · 27/12/2016 11:39

Ours is down, did it this morning. Have to do it as soon as possible after Christmas as having them up increases my dd's anxiety (she has asd), this way it makes the rest of the school holiday manageable for us as a family.

TheMortificadosDragon · 27/12/2016 11:39

The tree is for the pleasure of your family - each to their own! I must admit I gave mine a bit of a Hmm look this morning, but I'll probably leave it till 12th night.

Floralnomad · 27/12/2016 11:39

Ours will be coming down tomorrow or Thursday depending on what else we are doing , I like it all tidy for New Year and we also have to factor in taking down a lot of outside lights at my mothers .

maybeshesawomble · 27/12/2016 11:39

kitnkaboodle mine came down today which is a couple of days earlier than norm as we are going away, but it is usually down by New Year's Eve and replaced with twinkly lights and bits for DD's 2 January birthday. Not something I remember discussing with others though and I've no idea when my friends take their trees down unless they're people I'm visiting.
