To want to take down my christmas tree

DonaldStott · 27/12/2016 09:41

I have been jolly. Had a lovely few festive days. But we are going away in a couple of days for New Year and only home the evening before we are back to school/work.

I want to take it down today, but husband thinks I am being a bit of a misbag.

I am in the school of bday cards up only on the day of your bday, then into the recycling, so I do like these things to be short lived, but I want my living room back now the day is over. Aibu?

I'm taking mine down today or tomorrow... once Christmas is over, it's over!

Ciutadella · 27/12/2016 11:41

Yes I quite like the fact that Christmas gradually fades away when you leave the decs up to Twelfth Night - by then the tree is looking a bit tired, and it seems like a natural end, rather than a sudden one! but we put them up just before Christmas as well - if it was beginning Dec I might feel the same way as the early dedecorators.

Mirandawest you are a 6th januaryer for 12th night then - have you ever heard a good (or even not so good) explanation for why it is 6th not 5th?

maybeshesawomble · 27/12/2016 11:41

Today 11:35 PurpleDaisies

irregular I find if more relaxing to know the decorations are all in the attic and that's a job that doesn't need doing later.

Absolutely! Much more relaxing knowing it's all done!

sj257 · 27/12/2016 11:41

I don't understand this wanting to take trees down so early, Christmas isn't over 😞

PurpleDaisies · 27/12/2016 11:46

In what way is it not over sj257? That's a genuine question.

Lweji · 27/12/2016 11:50

Christmas lasts until the 6th of January, with the festivity of the Epiphany.

In Spain it's when present exchange takes place.

Ciutadella · 27/12/2016 11:50

Theologically purple daisies! In fact some take the view it is christmas until candlemas, though epiphany (6th jan) maybe a more obvious breakpoint.
Suspect that doesn't really figure in mosr people's reasoning though...

RebelandaStunner · 27/12/2016 11:52

This is why I don't put ours up too early. I'm not sick of it yet and we have lots of Christmas celebrations still to go to this week.
We will probably take it down NYD.

rosieandjim2 · 27/12/2016 11:55

Just taken my tree down all the other Decs are still up but had no space for ds4 toys which stay down stairs as he is only 17 months and it was dying and looked a mess xx

WetNovemberDay · 27/12/2016 11:58

My tree only went up a week ago. Still looks beautiful and still has chocolates on it. I suspect it will come down just after New Year due to going back to work etc before the 12th night.
Do what suits your family and circumstances. If you're not going to be at home to enjoy your tree then it's pointless being up.
I do think it's a real shame that trees are down during Christmas. I think it's a sign of the times. Christmas is becoming more and more a shopping festival. The trees tend to go up when everyone's excited about shopping for gifts etc then one the gifts are exchanged that's it Christmas is over. Yet its traditionally were only a few days in.

I have a friend who has her tree up at the end of November and it's always down by boxing day lunch time because she's pissed off with Christmas by then. She does the same every year so obviously is very happy with this but to me seems odd and I have to stop myself from saying. Why not out your tree u a bit closer to xmas instead but it obviously suits her family's version of Christmas.

Batteriesallgone · 27/12/2016 11:59

Christmas is over for us and the tree is outside.

I'm not religious and don't care about 12th night.

I love the build up to Christmas and tree goes up weekend closest to 1st Dec and comes down a day or two after Christmas Day.

Mirandawest · 27/12/2016 12:05

I'm not sure on the 5th/6th January thing but when I was little it was always the 6th January so that's what I do

Mine are coming down on the 3rd as we have a party on the 2nd. Then once it's down, we are decorating. It's been really handy for hiding the stripped wall. Xmas Grin

sometimesKit · 27/12/2016 12:10

I've been doing a big post Christmas tidy up today, idly considered taking some decs down but decided against it! We've had ours up since 3rd December and they make me really happy. Plus our tree was very expensive (for us) and still looking lovely! I will probably take down a bit at a time in the next few days, leaving the tree until last. Children are back at school on the 4th so they'll probably all be down by then.

To each their own!

monsterbookofty · 27/12/2016 12:25

My tree has been up a few days before Christmas and really enjoying the decs now the stressful part is over.
Its all the presents without a home that I am getting annoyed with! Grin

StarsandSparkles · 27/12/2016 12:30

Ill be taking my down tonight as i need the space back and want to get back to some semblance of normality

Blackfellpony · 27/12/2016 12:36

Ours came down on Boxing Day. We normally leave it until new year but the new kitten playing with it constantly was driving us crazy!

irregularegular · 27/12/2016 12:47

Purple Daisies - packing up the tree and decs is mainly my husband's job. Maybe that's the difference!

But once it all goes away it will no longer feel acceptable to sit around reading, jigsaw-ing and playing board games. So I want it around as long as possible!

haveacupoftea · 27/12/2016 12:50

I am keeping mine up another few days although i'm not sure if it'll see New Year. It only went up on 23rd Dec so I dont really mind it, and we dont have any other decorations up.

Gave the house a nice freshen up this morning though, dishes all washed, floors hoovered and mopped, bleach down toilets etc. which was nice.

Kel1234 · 27/12/2016 12:58

I never take mine down until January 6th, and it goes up the 1st weekend of December. But I love it

TempsPerdu · 27/12/2016 13:00

Our tree/decorations only went up on the 18th. They look beautiful and I find the lights really cheering at this time of year. No plans here to take anything down until Twelfth Night, and I don't know anyone who takes theirs down much before then. I'm not especially religious but really don't get the whole 'Christmas starts in late November and is over by Boxing Day' thing - the festive season is still in full swing as far as I'm concerned!

PansyGiraffe · 27/12/2016 13:04

For me these are the best days of Christmas - house full of food, new toys, visiting people during time off work (even when I've actually worked between Christmas and NY, like last year), none of the planning or shopping, can sit and admire it!

Our tree this year will come down on 2nd Jan as we're away for NY and back that day and school and work starts again on 3rd.

WorraLiberty · 27/12/2016 13:04

I'd completely forgotten we have this exact same thread every year Xmas Grin Wine

If you and your DH disagree OP, just toss a coin to decide.

user1471545174 · 27/12/2016 13:04

I don't get this on MN either, unless all trees have been up since October. Usually NYD here.

Beth2511 · 27/12/2016 13:06

ours came down christmas day night because oh accidently broke it :( gutted. normally i leave it unyil just after new year
