Its a nice idea and yes it serves business interests, and criminal interests and all the other bad interests it can.

I personally think its an awful idea and I wonder how many more people will have to die for this noble idea before they re introduce proper stringent borders and checks.

I do wonder about the smaller towns and cities away from London, Birmingham, Manchester, etc

We have armed response units out here in semi-rural areas and our nearest city - Newcastle - definitely has an armed response unit because they got a lot of backlash last week over posting photos of armed officers posing with visitors to the Christmas market. We saw them at the market and there were a couple of people following them with peace signs and trying to block their path into the market (not particularly effective with only 3-4 people on the 'protest'). There were people posting to FB and Twitter that "my bairns were petrified at the sight of them guns", my DC must be warped because they were fascinated rather than terrified.

I do tend to agree though that the bigger cities, though obvious targets, probably won't be targeted and that if an attack did occur here it would be outside of London.

SouthallGirl · 20/12/2016 12:28

Unfortunately few Syrians or Iraqis actually walked into Europe in the summer of 2015. Persons not from war zones but simply economic migrants tagged along, said they were one of the above and were allowed in. I don't understand why the guards allowed in Africans and Pakistanis for example without challenging them - unless of course Merkel's show was nothing to do with humanitarianism.

BillSykesDog · 20/12/2016 12:33

He had photographs on his phone, but it was accepted by the trial that these were from locations where he had visited Casinos because he had a gambling addiction rather than the 'scouting' expeditions they were called in the press.

I don't think we are talking at cross purposes, no. Basically what I am saying is that I suspect this time last week people who are now calling him an economic migrant would have been insisting that he was a refugee and should be called that and anybody who suggested he was an economic migrant was an evil right wing unsympathetic bastard who was denying his plight. But suddenly now he's driven a lorry into a market exactly the same people will be saying that of course he's not a refugee, he's an economic migrant. Because they're happy to twist semantics to suit whatever point they happen to be making at the time.

ElfontheShelfIsWATCHINGYOUTOO · 20/12/2016 12:36

Yes I get what your saying Bill, your right but I am talking about something different relating to a specific news item on the news and I am also thinking of something else Suzanna Reid said a while ago.

YY Southall girl, its madness. They probably let them walk in because they were all overwhelmed by sheer volume of people. They had no resources to check everyone, they had no idea who was Syrian or not. Local police forces sent begging letter to Merkel for more help, they couldn't cope they couldn't even verify people.

SameProcedureAsEveryYear · 20/12/2016 12:50

Latest in the German news right now... The guy they arrested is very likely NOT the terrorist after all!

Twogoats · 20/12/2016 12:55

What a mess.

The Guardian has already published their obligatory 'don't give the terrorists what they want' article! Angry

SouthallGirl · 20/12/2016 12:56

That's how it looks, Elf, that Germany and Austria were overwhelmed by sheer numbers, but I suspect it's Merkel making the decision to take one further step towards one of the EU's main goals, which is multiculturalism. If you read the founding principles of the EU as envisaged by the founders way back, and authored by Kalergi, you will see that the EU always was intended to be a political ideology.

We bought into it when it was presented to us as the EEC, a common market, but since the 70s it has moved quickly towards what it actually is - and that's totalitarianism, benefiting the conglomerates and the globalists.

Temporaryname137 · 20/12/2016 12:57

Whether the guy they have arrested is the terrorist or not, the actual terrorist will most likely be someone who came under the guise of being an actual refugee. He might possibly be a second generation brainwashee, like jihadi john.

Sickening because of what he has done, and horrible because it will have a backlash for genuine refugees. People who want to cause carnage and, albeit to a much lesser degree, people who are taking advantage of the situation to try and secure economic benefits for themselves, are making the position even worse for those genuinely fleeing war. And FUCK the people smugglers cashing in on all this desperation and misery. They should earn themselves a nice one way ticket at the end of a gun on one of their own fucking leaky boats.

BillSykesDog · 20/12/2016 13:06

Apparently the guy arrested is already on bail for a sex offence in July. I reserve judgement, but I think it would be incredibly convenient for them if it wasn't him. Because if it was him, Merkel is finished.

I wonder if they're going to blame the Polish trucker and say the heroic Pakistani rapist overpowered him?

Temporaryname137 · 20/12/2016 13:09

Surely even if you wear gloves and a mask you can't kill someone and drive a truck without leaving DNA in there?

BillSykesDog · 20/12/2016 13:11

Well apparently he has no blood on him or injuries. Which is perfectly possible if you use a truck as a weapon and just asphyxiated the driver. Sounds like balls to me. The Germans have form for being misleading over this sort of thing.

Temporaryname137 · 20/12/2016 13:12

Well yeah, why would he have? Although I did read that the driver had been shot, but that could just be early inaccurate reporting.

But someone must have left traces of DNA in there, surely. Or would jeans, trainers etc prevent it?

1horatio · 20/12/2016 13:20

The German papers said he shot the driver, why would that leave DNA?

But the police president said they'd put stone barriers around the markets to prevent similar attacks.

Oh, and in Switzerland talks about a further 'Israelisation' (=learning from Israel, at least according to the media) seem to becoming even more popular (not everybody calls it an Israelisation, btw)
So, more surveillance, more controls, more visible presence of security personnel (mainly the police) and otherwise drastically increased security measures. Sigh.

sportinguista · 20/12/2016 13:22

It seems there were some heavily blood stained clothes recovered from the back of the lorry, it seems to suggest he got changed after offing the driver, which if you want to evade suspicion would be logical. As for the gun, the driver was apparently shot, well you could toss it in a number of places or pass it to an acquaintance prior to the attack quite easily.

I would reserve judgement on this one too.

Temporaryname137 · 20/12/2016 13:24

I was thinking more of DNA traces on the door handle; driver's seat; steering wheel; controls etc. What I don't know is if ordinary clothing, say gloves and shoes, would prevent that? If it didn't, then it should be easy enough to see if the guy they have arrested was the terrorist or not.

sportinguista · 20/12/2016 13:27

Did he shoot the driver in the truck though? Logically if I was going to do this, I would shoot the driver outside the truck, it would just raise suspicion if it was covered in blood not to mention the risk of blood fouling the wheel and it being difficult to drive.

BillSykesDog · 20/12/2016 13:29

Oh this is RIDICULOUS. Apparently the attackers jumped out of the cab and he was followed by a witness who gave the police a moment by moment account as he chased him. But he somehow led them to the wrong man. And the wrong man just happened to be a bogus asylum seeker who came into the country under a false identity and was known to be a radicalised ISIS supporter and had previous arrests including for a sex attack under his belt.

But he is totally innocent and just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Germany's problems must be worse than I thought if you can accidentally arrest the wrong guy and he just happens to turn out to be a Jihadi!

Seriously, this really does sound like more Colongnesque misleading spin intended to take the heat off authorities a la 'NYE went off peacefully without incident'.

They are being very careful only to say he 'might' not be the right man and it 'could' be someone else.

BillSykesDog · 20/12/2016 13:30

Attacker -singular - sorry.

1horatio · 20/12/2016 13:31

*temporary

Idk. Technically? Yes, he could have killed him without leaving DNA. But to little civilian me it seems rather unrealistic... the experts will surely tell us. Shrug

sportinguista · 20/12/2016 13:31

and of course you leg it if you're innocent...

user1471439240 · 20/12/2016 13:31

We are an island, that is our immediate luxury.
Europe is awash with automatic arms and munitions, primarily smuggled from former Soviet Balkan countries and the Wests own supplled weapons have leaked back out of Iraq through Turkey.
Europe has open borders, munitions are easily moved across countries.
Our border is the sea, it is of magnitudes more difficultly for terrorist actors to secure arms in the Uk.
Our police are much more armed than people would imagine, that is by design.

TheCompanyOfCats · 20/12/2016 13:53

I just want to scream. I just want to stand on the top of a mountain and scream.

I'm sick of reading the same conversations, I'm sick of seeing the same articles, I'm sick of seeing the hashtags and candles on Twitter.

I've just had enough and I don't know what to do with my feelings, I really don't.

HeyRoly · 20/12/2016 13:58

I understand Cats. The same atrocities over and over. The same hand wringing responses. The same opinion pieces in the newspapers. "Pray for XYZ" (I rather think that religion). NAMALT. I just despair because I don't think this can be stopped.

HeyRoly · 20/12/2016 13:59

*I rather think that religion is the problem and needs to stay the fuck out of it.
