Dad 'choosing' to pronounce DD's name differently

This is the first post I've written. Apologises for bad spelling... I am writing in anger.

So my DD is 3 months old and I given her an usual name, which I have accepted people will/do pronounce it wrong because they don't know how to say it, its easy Once you know though. My Ddad seems to struggle with it, except today I was visiting with my DC and my Ddad said her name wrong (Again!) so my Dsis corrected him (again) to which my DDad response was "Well it shouldn't be pronounced like that it should be pronounced the way I said it, I am saying it this way"

It then got heated because I told him you can't do that it will confuse her as it doesn't sound anything like her name. He said shes too little to notice. I said he needs to call her by her name that we have given her end of!!
Im fuming because he blatantly told me hes choosing to pronounce it differently, I know this won't be the end of it. I am hurt by this. I know he doesn't like it because it's not a "solid english" name (hmmm my mom is german so hes being a dick), but I wish he would respect our choice.

I am worried about what DP will say when Ddad says her name over Christmas at family gatherings. Think its going to kick off, as this won't be the first time recently where DP has disagreed with him.

AIBU to be angry about this? Wwyd?

I've never heard the name pronounced Anay! It's a very popular name at the moment where I'm from and they all pronounce it how it appears the OP is pronouncing it. Are you northern OP? Maybe from a town that is famous for fish and pronunciation?

SallyDapp · 20/12/2016 22:04

Don't let it bother you, my mil spent years pronouncing one of her DGC's name 'Naomi' incorrectly, she would call her Ny-O-my, she just got called, 'Nanny who can't say my name' by the DGC concerned, it became her individual quirk. Children are very resilient, not only will she will cope but she will know he's talking to/about her. It really isn't worth a family feud or argument. Let him be different if he wants.

TangfasticFanatic · 20/12/2016 22:12

Off topic and haven't read the entire thread but how do you pronounce saiorse?

gemkat · 20/12/2016 22:19

Sear ...shha?

PhoebeBo · 20/12/2016 22:21

My french friend has a daughter called Anaïs and she pronounces it ann-ayce but known as Anna for ease !

Lucydogz · 20/12/2016 22:26

My mum did a similar thing with both of my son's girlfriends. Why? I haven't got the faintest idea, unless it was to fuck with my head. (which is a distinct possibility)

WeDoNotSow · 20/12/2016 22:31

I think it's always problematic to write things phonetically anyway, as people pronounce things differently.
To me, 'ar' and 'ah' are pronounced the same, but in a lot of dialects they wouldn't be

MrsMac74 · 20/12/2016 22:49

Is he worried / embarrassed he'll sound like he's saying 'anus'? Just a thought.

Alabastard · 20/12/2016 23:10

Seer-sha.

It's DD's name.

Buttercupsandaisies · 20/12/2016 23:11

I think people saying an nay are saying it because in English it simply sounds 'better'

An -eye- ees may be the French pronunciation but if you aren't French I think it's odd to say it as if you've suddenly got some French accent.

Buttercupsandaisies · 20/12/2016 23:11

I thought soirise was ser- sha? That's how soirise Roman says her name?

Buttercupsandaisies · 20/12/2016 23:13

She actually says its sersha as in inertia!

Alabastard · 20/12/2016 23:16

She says Sursha but trust me in Ireland it's Seersha. At least the part I'm from. It was Ryan Gosling who rhymed it with inertia.

Don't get me started on Bill Maher's pronunciation of his last name.

DeepanKrispanEven · 20/12/2016 23:16

I don't see that it's odd to pronounce the name as intended and as the French do. After all, we pronounce Michelle in the French way rather than as Mitchell.

TheSlaughterOfHerodificado · 20/12/2016 23:22

Lucky Pluto - you must be much younger than I am. ,sighs at thought of wasted youth>

TheSlaughterOfHerodificado · 20/12/2016 23:24

Maybe from a town that is famous for fish and pronunciation?

What an accolade! Is it 'Ull?

JigglyTuff · 20/12/2016 23:27

It's pronounced Seer-sha and spelled Saoirse!

Buttercups - Annay doesn't sound better. It just sounds like you don't know how to pronounce the name properly. Like calling someone called Saoirse Saucy

TheSlaughterOfHerodificado · 20/12/2016 23:27

I thought soirise was ser- sha?

I always thought it was sor-cha - haps to be corrected though. These spellings are Ireland's revenge for England being better ar=t rugby Grin

TheSlaughterOfHerodificado · 20/12/2016 23:27

*happy, not haps, also apologies for all the other mistypes and autocorrects

Unicorn1981 · 20/12/2016 23:27

My dsil calls my dd So-fee-ya when it's actually Sof-ee-ah. Drives me mad.

Alabastard · 20/12/2016 23:29

Thank you Jiggly. I'll admit it gets my back up when people try to correct the pronunciation. I'm making myself miss home now!

Unicorn1981 · 20/12/2016 23:29

Oh and btw that's my cousin in laws name Anais and she gets called Naisy as a nickname. Could that help?

Buttercupsandaisies · 20/12/2016 23:34

I don't get that deep? Do you mean the French pronounce mitchell as Michelle? if so I don't get the comparison - I suppose that's fine as we clearly spell them differently and pronounce then differently . But to use a French spelling name in England with French pronunciation is going to forever make things hard - as this thread highlights - many people inc myself just don't have a clue!

rockcake · 20/12/2016 23:38

YANBU
My daughter works with an Anais - she says everyone calls her Annay or Annie....Confused Not sure how Anais says her own name (she's Australian) but, OP, I do think you're entitled to have people- especially family and friends- pronounce your dd's name the way YOU say it should be pronounced, and if I were you, I'd make that clear and stick to your guns. Don't respond to your dad when he's saying dd's name his way, he's being a jerk. My dd has a classic English name spelt the usual way and it pisses me off when i still get her name spelt wrong on xmas cards from stupid relatives - as if they haven't seen it in writing enough times. She's 22 ffs!

Buttercupsandaisies · 20/12/2016 23:48

Jiggly
But anais pronounced phonetically in English is an-nay or an-ace

Saoirse isn't saucy in English phonics?

if applying English phonics an-eye-ees is wrong. I get op is using French pronunciation but phonetically it doesn't read that way in English hence the confusion 🙂
