That people in the south think they are better than those in the north

That's it really.

I'm interested in your opinion.

OP posts:
FizzBombBathTime · 19/12/2016 08:16

Well done op.

👍🏻

Basicbrown · 19/12/2016 08:16

Yup, and if you're outside of London, the South East or East Anglia we pay for you too, all the rest of the country are in net tax deficit.

It's the regions which are in tax deficit not individuals or even immediate areas. There are parts of London that would be in deficit and parts of Northern cities that are in surplus, what a load of old shit.

It is largely perception that people in the south are all better off. OK household income is higher on average but cost of living is also lower so it evens out. It's everything from haircuts to nursery fees, not just housing.

It just reminds me of some of the conversations I've had with dh's dim school friends. I was told repeatedly that there are no jobs outside the southeast (they seemed to think everyone just worked at Asda). I was totally Confused tbh as I came from an affluent part of the Midlands. They were a bit thick imo, I'm sure that they aren't representative though.

So I think yanbu op.

Basicbrown · 19/12/2016 08:18

The ignorance about the lives of ordinary Londoners is incredibly tedious. Its a crime to not understand what its like for people living in Bradford or Glasgow apparently. Its perfectly find to not have a scooby about living in Newham

Yes, everyone just has their own experiences, that are supplemented by the shit that they read/ others tell them.

Nicknameofawesome · 19/12/2016 08:20

Clearly all the best people live exactly where I do and have lived here all there lives. Surely that's what we all think? I thought we were all drones who can't possibly accept anyone who lives further than 3 miles from our house. The fact I grew up 50 miles away is irrelevant. I don't count...

Ahickiefromkinickie · 19/12/2016 08:20

Case in point...

I'm nowhere near Blackpool tower.

Yet the jolly northern japes have started....

Your case in point undermines your argument, as this jape was directly preceded by a joke about mind control of Southerners from Big Ben (as pointed out by DeepanKrisp as well).

I think this shows we see what we want to see sometimes.

I'm a Londoner with ILs in Yorkshire, I always envy them their access to beautiful countryside which they take for granted

I would move to Yorkshire or Cornwall if I could.

EllyOlly · 19/12/2016 08:21

IME southerners rarely give northerners a thought. Whereas northerners are obsessed with what southerners think (mostly what they think of them).

EverythingEverywhere1234 · 19/12/2016 08:29

Hopeful while I don't think anyone's experience should be ignored, I don't think it's north/south specific. I've lived in Devon my whole life and somehow have a 'posh' accent. I've had the piss taken out of my voice countless times but it's not specific to northerners at all, just someone with a different accent!

elQuintoConyo · 19/12/2016 08:32

I have lived in: Taunton, Inverness, Lincoln and Canterbury. And I have spent the last 15 years in Barcelona. Where does that put me?

The only crap I've had about my accent (flat southern vowels but otherwise unpindownable) is from someone from Manchester. Yawn.

nocampinghere · 19/12/2016 08:34

what other people think of you is none of your business.

ever heard that expression?
why the hell would you care?!

Basicbrown · 19/12/2016 08:35

And interestingly Cockneys/ Essex accent/ Bristolians etc hardly sound 'posh'

OurBlanche · 19/12/2016 08:41

IME southerners rarely give northerners a thought. Whereas northerners are obsessed with what southerners think (mostly what they think of them).

That's partly because of the television. If you think about all the programmes you see there is a South-centricness with Peter Kay making a nice contrast Smile

I am a Northener, have lived in the South and am now a bit more Midlandy... I belong nowhere Grin

CauliflowerSqueeze · 19/12/2016 08:42

I'm from the south. I don't think I'm better than anyone else. In fact I think I'm worse off in some ways. I was on rightmove fantasising about living in Yorkshire the other day. I could have a gorgeous 5 bed detached house with a fabulous garden for less than the price of a 2 bed flat here. My standard of living would increase massively. Of course I would know nobody!

wizzywig · 19/12/2016 08:46

Ive found many a dick-ish comment made by londoners about anything outside of london. As if life outside of london is somekind of wasteland with tumbleweed rolling around

MerryMarigold · 19/12/2016 08:48

I'm a citizen of the world. I don't think I am better than those in 'the North' or those in Syria. I have more money than most people in the world, but it doesn't make me better.

I think most people with the attitude of the OP also think the UK is better than the rest of the world and they must protect it from 'immigrants'. Basically if your mind is so narrow, you end up concentrating on the small space you have.

EllyOlly · 19/12/2016 08:49

Blanche you're right. If only there were some soaps or sitcoms set in the North Hmm

HandbagCrab · 19/12/2016 08:50

I think it's class rather than accent tbh. You're less likely to be middle/ upper class if you have a broad identifiable accent from anywhere in the U.K. Some people treat people differently depending on what class they perceive them to be.

OurBlanche · 19/12/2016 08:52

Elly Old soaps and ludicrous sitcoms! Stereotypical shite!

None of that could possibly exist in the South! Ever!

[Did I forget to add a 'sarcasm' note in my previous post... oh! Lighthearted Smile ]

crazycatzz · 19/12/2016 08:55

I'm from Surrey and I hate to burst your bubble op but we don't all think collectively, we do have our own minds.
I certainly wouldn't have married a chap from Yorkshire if I thought I was better than him now would I.
What a horrible way to think though, thinking that you are better than someone else.

Bluebolt · 19/12/2016 08:57

I am a northerner living down south, it is my family who are the most opinionated. I am now a snob (and the people around me), with no real experience of "real life" and with the government we stash all our money. Oh and not in need of a winter coat. my experience but then I know my experience is having an opinateded family not everyone in the North. Always feel sorry for those in Cornwall in these topics as people generally mean south east.

heartskey · 19/12/2016 08:59

I think on the whole that northerners are much friendlier and warmer,

Basicbrown · 19/12/2016 09:02

I think on the whole that northerners are much friendlier and warmer

In my experience I have never noticed a difference.

JassyRadlett · 19/12/2016 09:05

I think on the whole that northerners are much friendlier and warmer

I think that generalisations about millions of people based on necessarily limited samples of 'people I've met' are really weird. Grin

littlejeopardy · 19/12/2016 09:05

I am from Lancashire and don't really think badly about the South.

Yorkshire, however, is full of tight bastards, and must be hated with unreasonable and enjoyable passion.

SootSprite · 19/12/2016 09:06

Never mind the North:South debate. Birmingham v The Black Country is where all the real discussion happens Xmas Grin

ToastDemon · 19/12/2016 09:09

I lived in the north and was told a lot about cold, stand-offish southerners. I now in live in the south and find people to be very friendly and helpful. As an added bonus, they don't go on about people in the north.
