...to feel depressed that only 7% of UK identify as Feminist?

www.fawcettsociety.org.uk/2016/01/we-are-a-nation-of-hidden-feminists/

7% of the population and just 9% of women in this country identify as feminist. I'm not saying that everyone should call themselves feminist, I care more about what people do, rather than the label they assign themselves. But I am Sad that the number is so low.

Given that most people believe in sexual equality, why do so many people not feel comfortable to call themselves feminist? And what (if anything) can we do about it?

No one answered my question about male and female teachers...maybe more male teachers would encourage some boys

Right - but as noted, feminists aren't primarily motivated by this, so if their refusal to acknowledge the existence of a gap and instead continue to press for special assistance for girls (because STEM) is this likely to make things better ? Does this seem like the actions of those interested in equality ? Not to me.

DeviTheGaelet · 23/12/2016 21:59

Oh and before anyone says "well I know men are treated worse by the family courts" can I please request just one link that shows that? "My ex is a bitch" or "My DH ex is a bitch" doesn't count

RufusTheSpartacusReindeer · 23/12/2016 22:00

And i havent been arguing...

But you have been ignoring everyone who doesnt fit into your

Naughty feminists Sad arguing schtick

And i am impressed ..only 7% of the population are feminists but by christ they get around....

amispartacus · 23/12/2016 22:01

But feminism is something that claims to be equality for all, when in reality it falls short

Its main focus is on women and girls. You can be a feminist and WANT equality for all. But you may only focus on women and girls.

Just like someone who wants LGBT equality may well want a more equal world for lots of people but they only focus on LGBT people.

RufusTheSpartacusReindeer · 23/12/2016 22:01

Aaah bless you ami

RufusTheSpartacusReindeer · 23/12/2016 22:03

your arguments are without depth and monotonous and yet you accuse everyone who disagrees with you as an ignorant troll

And when did i do this?

I didn't

Oh and feminists say .... When one feminist on here said it

Very lazy debating

SpeakNoWords · 23/12/2016 22:03

So under egalitarianism in the U.K. today, that would do a better job of ensuring equality for girls and women (and boys/men of course) than feminism does/did?

RufusTheSpartacusReindeer · 23/12/2016 22:05

And all these primary teachers....none of whom care about the boys?????

Bollocks

There is push after push to get boys reading and writing in infant and junior school

girlwiththeflaxenhair · 23/12/2016 22:05

Rufus

Did you not wonder out loud in response to Devi ? I must have imagined that. So who started with the insults ?

BoneyBackJefferson · 23/12/2016 22:06

SpeakNoWords

I'm not saying that at all, I believe that feminism is still very much needed. But it should stop pretending to be all things to all people.

RufusTheSpartacusReindeer · 23/12/2016 22:07

Oh bless you girl

devi couldn't be musing about any one else there?

No.....just you Grin

TheMortificadosDragon · 23/12/2016 22:08

Just picking up from something upthread as it was probably aimed at me:
you have no interest in getting more boys to do english, you don't personally value those courses as much as STEM (despite not actually doing them yourself)

I have no interest in getting more boys to do english, and think the imbalance is that too many girls do it. But this isn't down to my personal valuation of the subject - its based on having some knowledge of graduate pay and employability. I've got a copy of the Times Good University guide (DD is in yr 13, so I have stats to hand) ... career average table top Medicine, engineering, physical/environmental subjects - bottom English/Linguistics, Arts and Media studies. 'What new graduates are doing after 6th months, the top quarter ranked by 'positive destinations' is overwhelmingly STEM based , whereas English is down at 51 out of 66. Why on earth would you want to encourage more boys to do it?Confused

amispartacus · 23/12/2016 22:08

here is push after push to get boys reading and writing in infant and junior school

I believe you've mentioned that Grin

I believe that I've mentioned that boys' reading and writing is a priority in primary schools. People have noticed this issue.

It's not a feminist issue. But it is an issue. One of many educational issues out there.

RufusTheSpartacusReindeer · 23/12/2016 22:08

HAVE I AMI HAVE I????

Interesting. What do you mean by that?

girlwiththeflaxenhair · 23/12/2016 22:13

devi couldn't be musing about any one else there?

How the fuck would I know ? it was after my post though, you tell me who you think it was directed at ?

here is push after push to get boys reading and writing in infant and junior school

And there is push after push to get girls into coding so we're all good then ?

RufusTheSpartacusReindeer · 23/12/2016 22:13

Speak. Western feminism is for dominance if anything
Try this example. Post-divorce a woman can withhold access to the child but still gain child support with no punishment. Some 'patriachy' eh?

You;re not very well informed, but keep posting these gems as if they are truthful and relevant.
Child support isnt withheld by the courts as punishment for lack of contact, as it would punish the children.

RufusTheSpartacusReindeer · 23/12/2016 22:15

Oh shit i am about to agree with girl

Funnily enough i have agreed with parts of many of your posts

And there is push after push to get girls into coding so we're all good then

No....we still need to work on both of them, as hard as we can

freewoman · 23/12/2016 22:16

I think it is because young women have grown up with the freedoms older women won for them and they think it is just like that a steady state.
It isn't just like that. Women being treated as fully human is constantly under attack.

amispartacus · 23/12/2016 22:17

Here's a thought for the last page.

Someone took note of how many comedy panel shows (radio and TV) featured all women panellists (excluding the host) since 1967?

Guess how many he found?

TheMortificadosDragon · 23/12/2016 22:23

Um ... maybe one after the BBC realised that having a token Sandi on some of them wasn't exactly balanced?

SpeakNoWords · 23/12/2016 22:25

None?
