I don't agree with male circumcision either but it is incomparable with FGM. Unless as I said you are talking about a boy having the head of the penis and a third of the shaft removed.

Today is the anniversary of Steve Biko's murder by police, the anti-apartheid campaigner whose most famous quote is 'the most potent weapon in the hands of the oppressor is the mind of the oppressed'. What are men going to do about rape? Seeing as how rape is overwhelmingly committed by men? It's men who are mostly involved in running the porn industry etc. Men who mostly make our laws up, run the judiciary, and have the main jobs in the police.

Circumcision happens because of an outdated iron aged book, FGM from everything I can read about it appears to be a cultural thing so the only way that can be addressed is education, but you cant educate those that dont believe they need the education, from what I read FGM predates a lot of the 'organised' religions

As you said, feminists are not one big group. The feminists board should not be 'us'. It should be a range of feminists discussing and debating issues - as you said, feminists often disagree on things.

No you are wrong. Many of us are but unfortunately there is a very vocal libfem section who shut us down and call us bigots when we attempt to do so.

And yes FGM is "cultural". Stemming from a culture which views female sexual pleasure as dangerous and unnecessary and views women's bodies as public property. Can you say the same of circumcision?

Just, I was joking. I would love the sexes to be equal. The world could be a wonderful place with enough for all but most of the worlds wealth and land is stuffed in the pockets of a few men and that harms everybody.

Women are treated poorly by our society and even poorer in other countries. I want a better society for my daughter, for all our daughters.

Well you tell me then - where are the feminist campaigns to do this? There are some people like Gail Dines but they are receive nothing but abuse from their liberal, capitalist 'sex-positive' sisters.

Just I have male friends who claim to be feminists or 'humanists' but then they still say and do things that are at odds with it because they just don't see the privilege they have.

They can't help but benefit from it because that's the way society is set up. Even if they don't agree with it. I have a friend who is about as feminist as they come; he campaigns a lot etc and is the most enlightened of all the men I know. But when he and his wife had a baby, it was still her who took the maternity leave and compromised her career because that was all that was on offer and he took his two weeks paternity leave.

So even the men who are fighting for equality alongside women are still working within the same regime as those who aren't.

re 2016, I think it's shown up how much some women hate other women. It was always there but I suppose it's come up as some kind of "backlash" against wimmin having equality, how very dare they!

I do notice on politics threads that people also aren't willing to say "btw I don't know about this, can someone explain". I love the feminist board here but it might be because some of MN features women who can't say boo to a goose which is off putting.
