It's spelt 'marshmAllow' where's does the 'E' sound come from?! It really grates on me.

I also just the use of a soft 'X' in Prezzo. As in saying it prezzzzo, and not with the same hard z as Pizza.

What are yours?

Hmm. If I say "marshmAllow" or "marshmEllow" in a normal voice without emphasising the difference, they sound almost indistinguishable unless I make a big fuss about saying it slowly and clearly! I live in the South East so I have a normal southern British accent...

Bundao · 18/12/2016 10:34

Both liquorice (ice) and (ish) are correct apparently.

MountainDweller · 18/12/2016 10:37

The amount of times I hear restaura-N-teur on food and cookery programmes Angry

Surely these people are supposed to know?

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 18/12/2016 10:55

For 'warranty', my DH says warrantee... pronounced as in guarantee. He does have previous form for creating his own words, though. I give you 'displeasant' and 'unpossible'. I think it's dear, tbh Smile

cafenoirbiscuit · 18/12/2016 11:01

Yay to the marshmAllowers here. I have found my people!
I also get Xmas Angry about people who say 'textses', meaning multiple text messages. Having said that, I struggle to see 'text' as a verb.
I have tolerance issues I think Smile

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 18/12/2016 11:08

Seeing 'paninis' annoys me - it's already plural. Even worse if I see 'panini's'. As a PP wrote, though, one does feel unreasonably foolish about asking for a panino, despite it being more correct...

@lady Grin warrantee!

As for paninis, italian dp (born there, first language etc) actually said "two brushettas" as in broo shettas not two brus-kette
I looked at him with a Hmm face.

WanderingNotLost · 18/12/2016 11:29

I think I might be the only person in the world that pronounces marshmallow to rhyme with swallow Confused

CalmItKermitt · 18/12/2016 11:30

My personal bugbear is miss-CHEE-vee-uss
Instead of MISS-chee-vuss

You hear it a lot, even tv hosts/narrators etc who should be sacked 😡😡😡

Aftertheraincomesthesun · 18/12/2016 11:40

Three from the world of horse people...

Turmeric - mispronounced as tumeric - much touted as a cure all for horses.
Manège - a school to ride in but called a ménage by the majority of riders.
Conformation of a horse - mis pronounced as confirmation- only correct in Catholic horses..

WholeL0ttaRosie · 18/12/2016 11:57

The clothes shop Joules, I bought a top from there the other week and someone asked me where it was from. Do I say jewels or jowls or something completely different?

CaptainCabinets · 18/12/2016 11:59

Fuck I've just though of more.

His/he's. I see this one a lot! Confused

People who pronounce 'bald' and 'salt' wrong. It's not 'bold' or 'solt'! 😟

I also want to boot anyone who says 'can I get' 😤😤😤

JassyRadlett · 18/12/2016 12:00

Sorbet may have been Arabic originally but it entered English via the French word (and pronunciation) in the 16th century. So we can all keep saying it the way it's always been pronounced in English.

oxcat1 · 18/12/2016 12:03

My dad (born in Dudley) says 'poppies' for 'puppies', and 'duv-ee' for 'duvet'. Any explanation for this or is he just wrong?!

CaraAspen · 18/12/2016 12:04

"marshmEllow"

That would the pronunciation of choice in one of the poshest areas of Edinburgh, Morningside. Lol

WhoKnowsWhereTheT1meG0es · 18/12/2016 12:23

I say Joules as Jools. As in kilojoules.

ScrambledSmegs · 18/12/2016 12:42

DH says Warren-Tee as well. Like he's referring to Warren G's less well-known friend.

He mispronounces so many words consistently that I've started to think of some of them as the correct way Blush.

Andrewofgg · 18/12/2016 12:43

Perhaps everywhere that sells them should also sell grips at the checkout?

ghostyslovesheets · 18/12/2016 12:47

I think people who always use the correct pronunciation can sound a bit pseudy

But I do dislike Cava pronounce Caaaaava with a long 'a' it's not it's a short 'a' as in And (both of them)

Bunnyfuller · 18/12/2016 18:17

Ouch I WAS saying I hate the soft z as in buzz. Yes, pret-zo is correct. The double X in Italian gives a glottal stop.

OP posts:
Bunnyfuller · 18/12/2016 18:18

Double Z, fecking autocorrect x

OP posts:
Pluto30 · 18/12/2016 19:52

DH and I argue about envelope. He calls it an onvelope.

This is correct if you use the original French pronunciation.

goose1964 · 18/12/2016 20:06

I hate missed Ts in the middle f words, wa er instead of water etc

WhoKnowsWhereTheT1meG0es · 18/12/2016 20:12

The way DH says "onn-velope" sounds anything but French, where the n sound would be much less distinct. Anyway we are English and "en-velope" sounds much better.
