It's spelt 'marshmAllow' where's does the 'E' sound come from?! It really grates on me.

I also just the use of a soft 'X' in Prezzo. As in saying it prezzzzo, and not with the same hard z as Pizza.

What are yours?

OP posts:
GrinchyKiwi · 17/12/2016 21:22

I can neither hear nor pronounce a difference between mallow and mellow. I'm a Kiwi; it's my accent. So yes, YAobviouslyBVVVVVU.

Bumbleclat · 17/12/2016 21:23

people who mix up brought and bought!!!!

sparechange · 17/12/2016 21:25

Fuck. Damnit.

I've reported this thread for deletion just in case DH ever finds it

Sorry, OP. It was a great thread but I can't let him be right on this

JasperPotato · 17/12/2016 21:25

I've seen someone misspell part of their business name as 'marshmellow', then try to style it out as being a deliberate error, "as they taste so mellow". Slightly off topic. Still infuriating.

Agree with bruschetta. Grinds my gears.

bumblingmum · 17/12/2016 21:25

My DH says proply instead of propERly. Drives me mad.

FuzzyWizard · 17/12/2016 21:26

The ones that really irritate me are pronouncing Moët "mo-ay" and l'Occitaine in any of the weird ways my SIL says it.

JasperPotato · 17/12/2016 21:29

Improving, I was told that Mowet pronunciation is correct as it's not a French name.

And 'bru-ske-tta'

DubiousCredentials · 17/12/2016 21:30

These threads always leave me feeling frightened to ever speak in public ever again Blush

iklboo · 17/12/2016 21:30

Expresso. No one asking (arksing) for expresso should be served. Ever.

Wheresthattomoibabber · 17/12/2016 21:34

'Mowet' correct as it's Dutch. And I think Preemark is correct too. I am reeling after discovering that Nutella is pronounced newtella. I can't accept it.

MollyHuaCha · 17/12/2016 21:35

Licorice is meant to end in a 'sh' sound, isn't it? Just has a weird spelling... Sorry if I've missed the point, feeling a bit dozy with all the marshmellows I've just eaten.

JeNeBaguetteRien · 17/12/2016 21:40

Oh I'm surrounded by people saying:
MarshmEllow
Choritzo
Brewshetta (I was corrected by a waitress in an "Italian" restaurant in Chester when I said broosketta. Though the town was very pretty my indignation mars my memories! )
Key-abatta
Pry-mark. It has been Pree-mark for years and years.
People who confuse 'borrow' and 'lend'.
And a colleague who says sauvignon blanche.
It hurts my ears!

iklboo · 17/12/2016 21:42

Grinchy -my favourite advice from a kiwi I knew was 'if a kiwi says sex don't get excited. He just means the number between five and seven'

tellmewhenitsover · 17/12/2016 21:42

My dd says MASHmallow.. Angry drives me bonkers

ImprovingMyMH · 17/12/2016 21:48

Jasper, I know (although I only learned on MN) - sorry, I just posted a list of words without saying which I thought were correct Grin:

Mowet
Preemark
Leedl
Espresso
Brusketta

I'm not sure what else I posted though!

YorkieDorkie · 17/12/2016 21:51

Sauvignon Blanche Shock noooooo!

TheProblemOfSusan · 17/12/2016 21:51

My dad pronounces "latte" as "latty", rhymes with "batty". But I'm pretty sure he knows full well what the proper way to say it is and is just being professionally northern at the baristas.

ImprovingMyMH · 17/12/2016 21:52

I used to say chorizzzo.

Now I think it's choritzo.

But I've heard people say choritho.

#baffled

Ahickiefromkinickie · 17/12/2016 21:57

I judge you for posting a pedantic OP without spellchecking it.

And then compounding it by not checking your correction post.

ThoraGruntwhistle · 17/12/2016 22:01

I've been warring against the 'marshmellow' people for some years now, totally on your side there. I'm a bit Confused by the 'liquorice' thing though, doesn't everyone end it with an 'ish' sound?
Re chorizo, I think the 'th' sound is correct but nobody understands you when you say it like that so I go with 'choreetso' because that's how everyone else seems to do it.

liz70 · 17/12/2016 22:01

Y'all need to marshmellow. Grin

ImprovingMyMH · 17/12/2016 22:02

Ahickie, I think the OP was only joking about judging people for mispronouncing words.

Anyway, can anyone help me with bergamot? And voile?

UnGoogleable · 17/12/2016 22:02

MIL says "Prosssshecco" and "Coush Coush" because she thinks she's posh.

But she also says "St Pancreas" and I judge her.

I severely reprimanded DH for saying 'Pacifically' the other day. I said when you 'specify' something, you don't Pacify it; when you ask for something 'Specific' you don't ask for something Pacific. So you don't ever Pacifically do something.

Grrrrrr

Ahickiefromkinickie · 17/12/2016 22:05

imimproving I think I'm joking too

BiscuitMillionaire · 17/12/2016 22:09

A Swedish friend told me that Ikea is pronounced 'ick-ee-ah'. Not one bugger in England pronounces it like that.

Btw re chorizo, I think I heard on the radio that the pronunciation depends on which region of Spain you're from (some regions pronounce z as 'th', some as z). But it's not 'itz'.
